Full Story: https://goo.gl/AzzxXH On August 17, the final “big class” competition for the 10th All-Japan High School Super Cup Dance-Off was held in Yokohama City. Hosted by the Sankei Shimbun and sponsored by Acecook and Otsuka Holdings, the event picks the top high school dance team in Japan. For the first time in 4 years, the grand prize for “big class” (13 or more team members) went to Osaka’s Doshisha Kori, making this their 4th victory. Staging a comeback after last year’s second place showing, Doshisha Kori came to the competition with an arm-shaking style of dance called “waacking.” Fascinating the audience with their performance of rapid movements and throwing their arms around like whips, they received massive applause. The runner-up this year was Tomioka Prefectural High, from Osaka. Honorable mentions went to Sakai Nishi Prefectural (Osaka), Imamiya Prefectural (Osaka), Kumeda Prefectural (Osaka), Komae Metropolis (Tokyo), Nara City Ichijo (Nara), and Yamamura International (Saitama). The great hall of the dance mecca Pacifico Yokohama in Yokohama City shook with intense performance face-offs bursting with the youthful energy of high schoolers. The “big class” competition held on the 17th included 55 teams. When the names of the winning teams were called, cheers rang out and the teams shared in joy. Doshisha Kori, taking the crown for the first time, introduced a dance based on the theme of a “Black Rose.” The members said that they put their hearts into expressing the mystery and beauty of the rose. After mistakes in rehearsal, they didn’t finish their production until the end of July, just before the competition. On the day of the competition, a “pitch-black rose” blossomed through perfect movements and costumes. Junior Haruko Kuzaki (17), club president, said eagerly, “I’m so happy to have the championship flag return to us after 4 years. I hope the classes below me will do their best to aim for a consecutive win.” Tomioka Prefectural High, who took the runner-up award, showed of the a full-power dance called “No Pressure,” aiming for their third consecutive victory. They said that their gorgeous and showy costumes reminiscent of the bubble era were obtained from vintage clothing stores and their mothers. Matching them to the music, they thrilled the stadium by shaking their nostalgic sauvage and straight hairstyles. Captain Saya Hayashi (junior) said, “I’m frustrated, because we had hoped for 3 straight wins. I expect that my classmates below me will capture the championship for sure.” In the “small class” (2-12 members) competition held on August 16, 55 teams danced beautifully, and Minoo Prefectural (Osaka) captured its second victory in a row. The runner-up went to Sakuragaoka (Aichi). Honorable prizes went to Chinzei (Kumamoto), Osaka City Han’ai (Osaka), Fukuoka Industrial University Joto (Fukuoka), Kyoto Ryoyo (Kyoto), Yurigaoka Prefectural (Kanagawa), and Seika Women’s (Fukuoka). Minoo Prefectural also won last year. Team leader, sophomore Madoka Matsumoto (17), said, “We had been hoping for a consecutive win, so I’m happy.” === About JAPAN Forward: JAPAN Forward is a new English-language news and opinion website run by the JAPAN Forward association Inc. The $10,000 Hotel on Rails: the Twilight Express Mizukaze

02:59
This February, JR West unveiled the new Twilight Express Mizukaze rail cars and passenger cabins. The Mizukaze, which will commence operations on June 17, is a luxurious sleeper train with berths going for as much as 1.25 million yen (approximately 10,000 US dollars) per person. The “hotel on rails” has all the amenities below, and more. Each Mizukaze train comprises ten cars: sleeper cars, the front and rear observation cars, a dining car, and a lounge car. The observation cars are sleeved in windows all the way up to the ceiling, with sofas stretched out along both sides of the car, creating a feeling of spacious openness and ease. The view from big observation car windows is expansive. Passengers in the rear observation car are able to move out onto the open-air observation deck and feel the wind blowing as the Mizukaze glides along the rails. The entirety of Car No. 7 is a sleeping berth known as “The Suite.” Very few train cars anywhere in the world are as luxurious as this one. Car No. 7 accommodates just two people, and tickets for this car range from 750,000 to 1.25 million yen. White marble covers the entrance to Car No. 7, which is divided into a living room, a bedroom, and a bathroom. The understated, slightly dark interiors of the other sleeping cars give way here to a bright atmosphere liberally appointed with tones of white. This creates a mood of lightness and expansiveness. There is a bathtub in the bathroom, allowing the room’s occupants to soak while watching the greenery of the Japanese countryside pass by outside the car’s windows. Being able to see out means being able to see in, however, so the blinds in this room can be manually lowered in an instant.

Interview with Bubbly Dance Coach, Akane | JAPAN Forward

Related Story: https://goo.gl/m1iru3 If you haven’t seen it yet, watch the “Bubbly Dance” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxu_7kIvD2U) that Tomioka Senior High School students performed at the recent 10th All-Japan High School Super Cup Dance-Off. Although they only placed second overall, they captivated viewers by their mesmerizing movements and nostalgic outfits so that the applause undoubtedly proclaimed them the “people’s champions.” This year’s theme, based on Japan’s bubble economy of the 1980s, represented the flashy, fast-cash lifestyle at the time Japan dominated the global electronics industry, manufacturing the majority of the world’s consumer electronics products and introduced innovative and revolutionary new products. Nintendo and Sega were leading the first global video game market expansion, and many Japanese companies were acquiring businesses in the United States. Similar to the crash of the bubble economy, unfortunately, Tomioka’s national reign stopped this year after two back-to-back championships. Their performance in 2016 was also highly-stylized, with the regional theme of Osaka Obachans (grandmas), featuring awkward but adorable sequences that entertained the audience. They took home the first prize. It was the second year in a row that Tomioka won in the national competition, and their unique style and brand started to create a new standard of dance performance. Still, the buzz about their performance last August reached and lingered on the internet, as well as Japanese TV and media, for weeks throughout the summer. Akane, the coach of the Tomioka Senior High School dance club in Osaka prefecture, sat down with JAPAN Forward editor in chief Yasuo Naito on September 29. Akane discussed the timeline of events that led to Tomioka’s success on the national stage. In a small city in Northern Japan, on a cold morning with no wind between October and April, you might experience an incredible sight if the weather conditions are right. Railway Park Museum: Near-Realistic Landscapes | JAPAN Forward

A “museum full of memories and dreams”, the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park (Minato-ku, Nagoya) is mesmerizing visitors with its grandiose railroad diorama exhibition. The third video will be Near-realistic Landscapes. Around 200 train cars in the form of both bullet trains and conventional lines run throughout the largest diorama in Japan, which measures 220 square meters in total area size. The trains can be freely maneuvered and never collide as they are operated with an original digital operating system developed specifically for the diorama. The system’s operation is modeled after an actual railway’s digital ATC system (digital automatic train control system). Therefore, the automatic brake function is applied when trains come too close to one another. The diorama also has some of Japan’s popular “characters” hidden throughout the display. Looking for the “hidden character” miniatures is another fun way to enjoy the exhibition. === About JAPAN Forward: JAPAN Forward is a new English-language news and opinion website run by the JAPAN Forward association Inc. Japanese Traditional Accessory; ‘Tsumamizaiku'

03:46
They’re called the tsumamizaiku, those cute, at times dainty, hairpins. But centuries before they became ubiquitous among young ladies today, they were the traditional accessories made and used by female servants of the Imperial court during the Edo period 300 years ago. In those times, high society people in the court wore gorgeous accessories, while the servants only had their leftover kimono and yukata pieces. They made good use of those leftover pieces, however, by creating flower-shaped hairpins. For Mr. Masayuki Takahashi, owner of the store-cum-museum “TSUMAMI-DO” in Asakusabashi, downtown Tokyo, the image of tsumamizaiku to him is simply, Japanese flower. Indeed, they are so intricate and meticulously detailed, that each tsumamizaiku is not just an accessory but also a piece of art. To make one flower won’t take so long. All you need is a pin, 6 pieces of square-shaped kilts, and starch glue. Fold the kilt three times and make a triangle each time. Let the kilt absorb the glue by putting it on a small board with the starch glue. Lastly, pick up the folded kilt on the board and stick it to the pin, and it’s done! The unique part of this tsumamizaiku is that you get to choose your own shape, patterns, and colors. Each piece has a slightly different shape. Given the fact that the details and complexity of the design follow the maker’s taste and style, you can say the accessory is a reflection of one’s personality. So which part of your character do you want your accessories to reflect? Cuteness? Elegance? One thing is sure: your personal touch will make the hairpins priceless. Nara Has Tea Ceremony with a 5KG Bowl | JAPAN Forward

Full Story: https://goo.gl/FroRs6 🍵 Tea ceremony still manages to have an inexplicable allure for both foreigners and Japanese. This is perhaps because it’s a ritual performed only by people with years of experience behind the screened walls of a traditional Japanese room. Yet a temple in Nara has managed to take this fascinating practice a step further, and temple visitors are invited to participate. On January 15, the first tea ceremony of the year — called Ochamoroshiki — took place at Saidaiji Shrine in Nara. With 40 participants, it was a ritual which featured one interesting characteristic. As the ritual unfolded, guests passed around a huge cup of green tea — 40 centimeters wide and weighing more than five kilos! === About JAPAN Forward: JAPAN Forward is a new English-language news and opinion website run by the JAPAN Forward association Inc. High School Girl Shares the Joys of Clam Gathering in Tokyo Bay

02:47
‘Like digging treasures’: In Japan, clam gathering is known as one of the most famous outdoor leisure activities, and from spring to summer, families, friends, and couples enjoy gathering a wide variety of different clams. In Japanese, this activity is called “Shiyohigari”. Clam gathering has existed since the Heian period, which occurred more than a thousand years before. The location we used for clam gathering was “Ushigome” seacoast, “Kisarazu”, in the Chiba prefecture. The reason why we chose the Chiba prefecture is because Chiba is known as the Mecca of clam gathering in Japan. The clam-gathering process is not so difficult. All you need is a "Kumade”, which is similar to a shovel, a “Net”, a couple of towels and a bucket. Make sure that you are wearing something comfortable and if you don’t have “Kumade”, you can use a shovel instead, to dig into the sea. This was my very first time experiencing clam gathering and it was surprising for me in a way, that the sea water in Tokyo Bay is so clear that I could see everything under the sea in the Shoaling beach. I was also able to see other species like crabs and fish. Overall, it was like digging treasures and the fact that it was natural and not man-made treasures. You are able to fulfil your peaceful mind and your starvation at the same time. Why don’t you try it out? The clam gathering season has just started! Naruhito's First Ritual as Emperor | JAPAN Forward

05:45
Full Story: http://japan-forward.com/in-the-rites-of-becoming-emperor-naruhito-hopes-japan-can-pursues-world-peace-together-with-other-countries/ On Tuesday May 8, the series of spring rituals that began April 30 marking the transition to a new Imperial era and the accession of Naruhito as Emperor of Japan came to a close. The 59-year old emperor of the Reiwa era reported to the Kashidokoro in the Imperial Palace at just after 10.30 A.M. , wearing – for the first time – the Imperial robes which have been passed down by generations and contain a color which only the emperor is allowed to wear. He was accompanied by the Imperial House chamberlains, who carried with them two of the Sacred Treasures which symbolize Naruhito’s legitimate status as Emperor: the sword and the jewels. Then, in this final rite in the initial set of ceremonies of becoming emperor, he solemnly reported to the divinity Amaterasu, the mother figure of the Japanese Imperial House, that he had accepted his duties as emperor. Following the Emperor Naruhito’s fulfilment of the rites, at about 11 A.M., his wife Empress Masako followed her husband in the ceremony. She wore a green-colored traditional dress and an elaborately decorated hairstyle. The May 8 ceremonies brought a close the first phase of the new emperor’s enthronement rituals. The final ceremony, and perhaps the most important, is a series of rites known as the Daijosai, a thanksgiving ritual to take place on November 14-15. This ceremony is performed by the Emperor only once during his reign. In it, Naruhito will present the divinity Amaterasu with the year’s harvest and pray for the wellbeing of the Japanese people. === About JAPAN Forward: JAPAN Forward is a new English-language news and opinion website run by the JAPAN Forward association Inc. Getting Over a Hot Summer by Using the Japanese Traditional Ways; Be Fashionable at the Same Time

03:30
As if the Japanese summer is not hot enough, it seems to be getting hotter each year. For centuries, though, the Japanese people knew just exactly how to survive the hot weather—and in fashionable ways at that. One of the most famous summer symbols, the “goldfish” were known from Muromachi era, which was around 1401 to 1500. They were discovered in China first, and came to Japan. Another popular and traditional Japanese symbol during summer is the “fuurin,” which is written with two Chinese characters: “wind” and “bell.” The sound of that small bell and the textures of different varieties in fuurin are loved by a lot of people in Japan. Lastly, “Natsumatsuri” is the most popular and known event during summer in Japan. It is the summer festivals in English. People wear yukata to the festivals. Yukata is only one layer, so it is very cool to wear. Choosing your own yukata is an experience in itself because of the wide range designs and colors available. It is tempting to just cool down in this hot summer by using the air conditioners. But if you try these traditional ways, you might be able to feel refreshed physically and mentally at the same time, because all of these symbols are enjoyable and entertaining. You must try these uniquely Japanese ways of cooling down!

Dolls, Peaches, and Spring - Hinamatsuri Is March 3

02:22
March 3rd is Hinamatsuri, the doll festival, a special day to pray for the growth and happiness of young girls. Many places throughout Japan will be covered with unlimited shades of pink as people celebrate the early spring festival. Hinamatsuri is also called momo no sekku, or the peach festival, since March is the peach blossom season in the lunar calendar. In ancient China, the momo (peach) was believed to have the power to expel evil spirits and this tradition was brought to Japan by aristocrats visiting China during Heian era (794-1185) but eventually spread to all classes and became one of Japan’s annual festivals. A few days before Hinamatsuri, families often set up the hina-ningyo, special dolls for their daughters. The dolls are believed to function as effigies that protect the house from evil spirits. By displaying dolls once a year, the parents wish for their daughters’ long and healthy life. Once all the dolls are lined up in the correct position, the stand is decorated with peach blossoms. Families often get together and enjoy traditional dishes such as, chirashi-zushi (sushi rice topped with fish and other “lucky” ingredients), clam soup, hina-arare (colorful rice crackers), and hishimochi (diamond-shaped multicolored rice cakes) while drinking shirozake (white-sake), while girls often wear elaborate kimono gowns as they pretend to be a prince or a princess. Enjoy the early days of spring!

The Suite of the Twilight Express Mizukaze
