It helps regulate vital functions such as our blood pressure, blood volume, pH levels and it’s also involved in a number of metabolic processes, nerve activities and the proper flow and operation of the circulatory system. But too much salt can cause some serious problems. When the body’s optimum sodium balance is thrown off, things start to go wrong. It puts a lot of stress on your kidneys, blood vessels and your heart. This could eventually lead to far more serious things than just high blood pressure even as serious as a heart attack or a stroke. The US Department of Agriculture recommends that healthy people limit their sodium intake to 2,400 mg per day. That’s about the amount you’ll get from a level teaspoon. But, most of us are getting way more than that, mainly through the hidden salt found in processed foods. Before we dive in, I want you to understand that salt itself isn’t bad. It’s a mineral that your body needs to maintain a balance between fluids and sodium and also for healthy muscle and nerve function, so you don’t want to cut it out altogether. Instead you want to make sure that you’re not eating too much and you can do that by looking out for these 8 key signs. Let’s start with what most doctors consider to be the most obvious sign of taking in too much salt... high blood pressure. Even though most of the medical community still continues to hold the stance that salt raises blood pressure some studies are starting to call this view into question. But the current standpoint goes like this: The ideal blood pressure is 120 over 80. Anything over that is considered high. A number of studies show that there’s a large association between the amount of salt you eat and your blood pressure and this association increases with age. It works like this; When you take in too much salt, it makes it much harder for your kidneys to filter toxins and extra unwanted water and fluid from your blood. The extra sodium in your blood, pulls water out into your blood vessels. This excess volume of water in your blood vessels results in higher blood pressure, but it doesn’t just end there. All of this makes the blood vessels work harder, which cause their walls to get thicker. This further reduces the amount of space inside the vessels that are already full of extra water, which also further reduces the amount of blood that gets to your organs, making your heart have to work even harder to circulate blood throughout your body. Is Salt Actually Bad Or Good For You?
Today we want to clear some misconceptions about salt. You have been told that salt is bad for you, right? Salt will cause high blood pressure, right? If you reduce your salt you may prevent a heart disease, right? The answer which may surprise many people is strong ‘NO’. There are so many myths about salt that we should dispel for the sake of our good health. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REFINED & UNREFINED SALT You have been told to avoid salt because people think salt is harmful. The problem is that they are not aware of the difference between refined salt and unrefined salt. The salt that is toxic and we should be avoiding is really the refined table salt, the white salt that you find in your kitchen and in the salt shaker on your dinner table. Unrefined salt on the other hand plays an important role in sustaining your health. 🔸 REFINED SALT Refined salt is harvested mechanically from sea water. Sea water contains about 94 minerals and trace minerals. To process the refined salt chemicals are added to remove all the other minerals to extract only the sodium and chloride. The salt is bleached with chlorine to give a white appearance, and heated to a high temperature to crystalise it. Anti-caking agent aluminum is added to make it free-flowing, so that it can be used in a salt shaker. All the trace minerals are considered as impurities and harsh chemicals like ferrocyanide is used to separate the impurities, which you actually need to stay healthy. None of the chemicals added provide any benefits to your body, they in fact harm you. The refining process makes the table salt (sodium chloride) harsh and toxic and results in a mineral imbalance in the body, which is one of the reasons for DNA damage. This is what gives salt a bad name. Without minerals, the vitamins you take are rather useless. People are right when they say salt causes hypertension, but this is only true for refined salts. Unrefined salt actually lowers blood pressure. 🔸 UNREFINED SALT Unrefined salt contains over 80 essential minerals/trace minerals. for nerve conduction, muscle contraction and boosting the immune system. Without these minerals our body cannot function optimally. The presence of the minerals gives a higher pH, which means it’s more alkaline. There are 2 common types of unrefined salts, namely sea salts and Himalayan rock salt. The popular sea salts are the French Celtic Salt and to a lesser extent the Portuguese Sea Salt, the 2 regions where the best sea salts come from. The pink Himalayan rock salt is mined from the ancient salt deposits formed over a million of years ago on the Himalayas. Both these unrefined salts are almost similar in properties and are great for your health. So which unrefined salt is your choice? Celtic sea salt is higher in magnesium compared to Himalayan rock salt. But there has been a lot of talk recently about sea water contamination from micro-plastics. We are not sure whether this has affected the harvest of sea salt there. We know how hazardous plastics are to our health. They are hormone mimickers and endocrine disruptors. This contamination is not present in the Himalayan rock salt.
