Top 5 Coconut Products to Use for Better Health | Thomas DeLauer: Time to answer a common question - Which Coconut Should I Be Using? For more topics, head to http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com We have to make sure you're using the right coconut because otherwise it's going to taste like garbage. I'm doing this video because the last video I did surrounding my low carb hot chocolate that used coconut cream prompted a lot of comments, a lot of messages, and a lot of emails surrounding the right utilization of coconut cream verses coconut milk, coconut butter, coconut water. I figured I'd explain them briefly for you because at the end of the day they're all pretty similar and a lot of times they're just different constitutions of the same thing. Let's start with coconut cream. You generally get it out of a can. I haven't seen it in any other form than a can. Now basically what this is, is a very condensed coconut milk that almost comes out the consistency of sour cream. Sometimes, even a little bit more firm than that. This is perfect to add when you're trying to get a creamy consistency maybe to curries or maybe you're trying to add it to a beverage to make it have a little more of a milky consistency and trying to get a little bit more fat in. There's a lot more saturated fat in this than in other coconut milks. But that doesn't mean that coconut is bad for you. A lot of people ask if coconut is bad for your health, but the simple truth is, no, coconut is healthy! Then the next one is going to be light coconut milk. This is the kind that you usually cook with. You can hear that it actually has a little bit of a liquid sound to it. It's not in a solid state. This is not the kind of thing that you typically want to add to a drink because it's not adding the saturated fats that need. This is a lot more of a watery kind of substance. Better for cooking. Then we have coconut butter or creamed coconut which is totally different from traditional coconut cream. Coconut butter is taking coconut cream to the next level where it is actually reduced even more to the point where it's more like a butter. You're just left with the fiber and the fat more or less. You could spread it on bread. You could cook with it. You can spread it over your pasta. You can do all kinds of things. Except it's a much healthier alternative than butter. Then of course we have coconut water, which is a whole different ball game. Coconut water does not contain any of the meat of the coconut. It is just a strong electrolyte balancing drink that is literally the water from inside of a coconut usually added with some other water and sometimes added with sugar, so you have to be careful. In short, coconut water is what you want in order to boost your mineral and electrolyte balance. The only one that I don't have right here is actual coconut milk in a carton. What coconut milk in a carton is, is more of an actual beverage. If you were to drink one of these you would be consuming so many calories you'd probably end up feeling nauseous, so coconut milk when I refer to it in the carton is basically a little bit of coconut milk that's from a can but it's reconstituted with a lot of water so it's more of a beverage. That's great when you're just trying to drink something or you're just trying to add it with cereal or something like that. I hope this clears some things up on what the difference between coconut cream, coconut butter, coconut milk, coconut water, and coconut milk from a carton is. Dalla dolla bill yall The diary industry alone spent 6.4 million dollars lobbying last year. Food for thought. Is Dairy Bad for You? It depends on the person. If you’re lactose intolerant, suffer with acne, or have any reason you think your body doesn’t process dairy perfectly - I would avoid it. However, it if you really enjoy it as a source of nutrition in your diet, and don’t suffer from the side effects. It’s ok to have. Which leads to the next question… Do you need dairy in your diet? Absolutely not. While diary does have lots of important nutrition like calcium, protein, and Vitamin B12, you can easily get those from other sources. Leafy greens, lean meats, and whole foods have all those nutrients WITHOUT all the sugar or hormone increases dairy. I personally don’t consume dairy for this reason. Does Dairy Help You Lose Weight? No. Weight loss is about having two things working correctly. Eating the Right Amount of Calories AND Having Properly Functioning Hormones. Dairy provides no advantage to losing weight and if you have an intolerance could impede some weight loss progress. What are the best kinds of dairy to consume? If you’re going to get your dairy on, Low-fat unflavored greek yogurt, keifer, and grass fed whey protein are the best. If you’re going to drink milk, make sure it’s organic. What kind of dairy should you never consume? Anything non-organic I’d avoid. Because dairy is already shown to raise IGF-1, avoiding any extra chemicals pumped into cows is a good idea.

SIDE NOTE: ALMOST TO 200 SUBSCRIBERS!!! :) Is milk good or bad for you? Are carbohydrates healthy or not? Could someone please explain to me how to stop eating Oreos? The point is: There is a lot of confusing, contradictory, and misunderstood information out there… So today the health nerd is going to show you how to “eat healthy to lose weight and feel awesome.” And it’s all backed by science… First, let’s start with what not to do… Mistake #1. Getting bad advice… Whether it’s a parent, a trusted friend on the latest fad diet, or some guy on the internet, just because someone is “healthy looking” doesn’t really qualify them to give you sound health advice. You wouldn’t take financial advice from a rich kid just because his parents are rich, the same way you shouldn’t take health advice from someone just because they are genetically gifted. Seek advice from those who have actually transformed themselves or really good looking internet cartoon people. Mistake #2. Eating processed foods… Do you know how much cardio it would take to burn off 2 Krispy Kreme glazed doughnuts? Approximately 37 minutes straight of jogging at an 8-minute mile pace. The problem with processed foods like chips, sugars, and those doughnuts are that they make getting in an enormous amount of calories incredibly easy to do. And strangely enough, these foods are more likely to leave you hungry and unsatisfied after a meal, causing even more calorie consumption. So avoid processed foods. Mistake #3. Thinking any specific “diet” gives you a free pass… There are plenty of overweight people who eat strictly paleo, and there are plenty of fit people who eat pasta regularly. The mistake is thinking that any particular diet magically lifts the “laws of health.” The point is: Just because the cookie recipe is “vegan approved” or “gluten free,” doesn’t mean your body needs 30 of them… Mistake #4. Eating lots of pretend “diet” foods. When something is labeled “healthy” in the food industry, it usually means “we have taken the naturally occurring fat out of this product and have inserted a ton of sugar and salt for taste - enjoy.” It’s at least a little ironic that they are now putting the fats back into foods as we now know the real dangers come from high sugar intake. The worst offenders almost always have the label “fat-free” and you should watch out for these in particular. Which is a perfect lead into the proven scientific ways to eat healthy… 1. LEARN TO READ Nutrition LABELS. Nobody can take charge of how you look and feel other than YOU. By far one of the best things you can do for your health is to learn how to read nutrition labels and understand what they mean. Click here to watch our video on how to read nutrition labels properly. 2. Eat Real Food. By real food, I simply mean food that grows in nature. It’s hard to go wrong if you focus on eating lots fresh vegetables, fruits, and lean meats. These foods have been proven in multiple studies to make your body feel full and satiated after eating. A good rule of thumb is to stick to the perimeter of the store when grocery shopping. This is where the fresh food is stored, so it’s a good idea for any healthy eater. If you’re eating fresh whole foods, but still not losing weight… 3. You need to track your calories… While there are PLENTY of other factors that matter in eating healthy other than just calories, they do play a significant role in your health. Something as simple as a calories tracker on your phone can be insightful to why your weight is going down or going up… But it’s not just the calories, you also need to… 4. Listen to your body Some people are gluten intolerant, some people are lactose intolerant, and others are just plain intolerant. Listen to your body BEFORE listening to the advice of the health and fitness community. If you start paying more attention to how your body feels before, during, and after meals, you will notice eating healthy is rather easy. In fact, consciously aware dieters often consume 1000 calories fewer than their counterparts.

It turns out it’s not so simple and some of the most promoted and popular foods can, in fact, harm you. Never eat these 10 dangerous foods for the sake of your own health and the health of your family. Even if you see the juice labels “not from concentrate” or “100% pure”, don't let this fool you. Juice, after being squeezed from different fruits, is kept in huge vacuum-sealed tanks where it can sit for up to a year before being packaged! And by that time, the juice has lost all its flavor, which is why manufacturers have to add artificial flavoring to make it taste fruity again. In most cases, cereals are loaded with refined carbohydrates and sugar. Even if the label assures you that it's fat-free and whole grain, check the list of ingredients. You'll most likely see that the product is full of sugar. Despite common belief, most yogurts don't contain probiotic bacteria since the process of pasteurization kills all these microorganisms. When consumed, trans-fats in ice-cream can cause high cholesterol, stroke, heart disease, and even cancer. Ice cream is also loaded with sugar, artificial flavors, and synthetic preservatives. And if it’s pink, purple, or red, it’s most likely been colored with cochineal extract or carmine, additives which can cause bad allergic reactions. Popcorn has some genetically modified ingredients as well as taste-boosting chemicals and additives. This leads to health problems such as heart attacks, digestive issues, allergies, skin rashes, breathing problems, and the depressing list goes on. Even more, popcorn is extremely caloric. These oils, when heated, become nothing more than trans-fats. -One egg contains as much cholesterol as a big greasy burger. -Microwave popcorn’s almost always lined with the same toxic substance you can find in Teflon pans. -If candy doesn’t contain sugar, it contains artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose, and saccharine. We all know the importance of eating healthy, but not everyone knows that the cookware you use to prepare your dishes is just as important as the food itself. Even the healthiest diet can result in severe health problems if your pots and pans are toxic. Find out which cookware you should avoid by all means for the sake of your own health and the health of your family. The non-stick properties of Teflon cookware are achieved with a coating of PTFE. This is a plastic polymer that, when heated above 572°F, starts to release toxins. These toxic fumes lead to flu-like symptoms called polymer fume fever, informally known as Teflon flu. Another chemical compound found in Teflon cookware is especially threatening since it tends to stay in the body (as well as in the environment) for long periods of time. Try cast-iron cookware instead. It even comes in non-stick varieties. It doesn't leak anything toxic into your food and is actually a nice natural way to increase your body’s iron levels. Though aluminum cookware is usually coated, the coating is prone to chipping, allowing the toxic metal to get right into your food. As for aluminum foil, using it while cooking is even more dangerous. In fact, there’s an established safe amount of aluminum the human body can manage daily, and that’s 20 mg per pound of body weight a day. When you wrap your food in aluminum foil and cook it this way, the amount of this substance that leaks into the food significantly exceeds the permissible level. Consider using glass cookware instead. If you’ve just enjoyed some fish in lemon juice or stewed tomatoes cooked in an uncoated copper pot and you find yourself suffering from extremely unpleasant symptoms (such as vomiting blood, light-headedness, yellowy skin, or gastrointestinal distress, among others) call 911 immediately. Try this safe alternative instead: stainless steel. Just make sure you're buying food-grade stainless steel since this is the only type that doesn't contain any nickel or chromium. Soft ceramic coating isn't durable enough and starts chipping after a few months of daily use. When this happens, lead and cadmium sometimes found in the coating will end up in your food and, thus, in your body. Lead poisoning is one of the most dangerous types of metal poisoning and can result in abdominal pain, headaches, infertility, and other health complications. Try this safe alternative instead: 100% ceramic cookware. And that’s because it can release copper when you cook acidic foods. Stainless steel is a great cookware option: it's relatively lightweight, scratch-resistant, and comes in non-stick varieties. -Soft ceramic coating isn't durable enough and starts chipping after a few months of daily use. Focusing on R&D for Essential's product and service development with health care partners, Stropkay says the challenge is to create products that can be used seamlessly by people in their every day lives, such as tools featuring sensors. Stropkay's specialties include design research and strategy, industrial design as well as mechanical and manufacturing engineering follow-through. Before starting Essential he worked at Richardson Smith, IDEO, and Gillette.
