World's First Car!

09:14
I got to drive the world's first car (replica), patented by Benz in 1886 Check out the series on new safety features: http://ve42.co/MB This video is sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, who invited me to come to Stuttgart to see their latest cars, crash test facilities and experience the innovations they are working on. Physics is something that is directly applicable to car safety. Cars go fast, but they also sometimes collide with obstacles, which brings them to a sudden stop, subjecting the car and occupants to very high accelerations, which can cause injury or death. So the major idea to improve car safety is to reduce these accelerations and there are a number of ways to do this: Passive safety: Seat belts: keep passengers in the vehicle, preventing them from continuing with constant velocity, flying through the windshield and suffering a worse deceleration when they make contact with the road. Crumple zones: increase the distance over which deceleration occurs, thereby reducing peak magnitude of deceleration. Air bags: increase the distance over which the head decelerates, again reducing peak magnitude of deceleration of the head. Active Safety: Anti-lock braking system: rather than 'locking' the wheels as can happen if you slam on the brakes with a traditional braking system leading to the tires skidding across the road, ABS attempts to control the amount of braking so that the tires always roll with static friction in contact with the road. This increases the backward frictional force that can be applied to the tires, again increasing the distance over which deceleration occurs, and it gives the driver an opportunity to steer to avoid the collision (hence why it's referred to as an active safety system). Special thanks to Mercedes for having me visit facilities in Stuttgart. I had a lot of fun making these videos so please do check out the series on Mercedes Benz's channel: http://ve42.co/MB Filmed by Simon Schneider Edited by Hoplite Creative and Trevor Carlee

Cars That Can Hit 1,000,000 Miles

03:49
Cars That Can Hit 1,000,000 Miles Number one. 1990 BMW 325i. This car was actually a test car by mobile oil and it only had one purpose and that was used to collect data. The vehicle was set to run at 85 miles per hour at times for up to four years. The bmw was was placed on machine to mimic road condition. After four year, it racked up 1,000,000 miles and it is proven that mobile oil can indeed extend an engine life! Number two. 2007 Toyota Tundra. This 10 year old truck has reached the 1,000,000 miles mark. Vic Sheppard the owner of the proud Tundra has reached the 1,000,000 miles in a short period of just nine years. For his reward of achieving this million mark and making Toyota look great. Toyota decided to reward him with a brand new model in exchange for his old tundra. Number three. 1966 volvo . Irvin Gordon of Long island drove his car until it reached 3.04 million miles. That is extremely impressive. Basically, Gordon believes in using good quality gasoline which prevents carbon build. Number four. 1963 volkswagen beetle. Now, this is a quality vehicle and plenty of Volkswagen fan is going to love this. this beetle has lasted since 1963 and was finally retired when it reached 1.61 million miles. Congratulation to albert klein the original owner of this proud beetle. Number five. 1983 mercedes 240 d. Paul Harman managed to get his vehicle to reach one million miles in 2008. He acquired the vehicle when it only had 40,000 miles! Overtime, paul decided to reward himself and got his Mercedes repainted, installed new driver seat, replaced the timing belt and transmission. Paul secret to having the vehicle last this long is regularly changing his oil at every 3,000 miles he insist. Number six. 1994 honda accord. It seems like almost every old Hondas has the ability to reach extremely high mileage. Especially over 200,000 miles with maintenance such as the timing belt, water pump and so on. However, the original engine and transmission lasted this long. The Honda accord reached 1.08 million miles within eight years by a route mapper. Living in the Washington d.c. area. Number seven. 2006 honda civic. Paul habib the owner of the civic managed to get his civic over 750,000 miles within 5 years and a 1,000,000 miles within a few more years. Number eight. 1987 volvo 240. You know what they say about Volvo? It is indestructible. Selden cooper that proud owner of the Volvo proved that right. Selden cooper managed to get his Volvo over the million miles mark in 2012. Before that, he owned a 1975 volvo and it looks like he is not going to change brand anytime soon. Number nine. 1996 dodge ram 2500. This dodge ram is owned by dan Edelman. The main reason why this dodge lasted so long is simply he maintained the vehicle himself. In other words, it was better cared for. Number ten. 1988 volvo 740 . Vic Dres of this volvo who resides in grover beach bought the Volvo with one goal and that is get his Volvo surpass 1,000,000 miles. In 2014 he finally reached that goal thanks to him simply doing his maintenance. His maintenance includes changing oil on time, replacing air filter, hoses and belts.

7 Tricks That Can Make Your Car Last Longer

08:26
If you want your car to serve you longer and save money on expensive service and maintenance, pay attention to these simple yet really important rules. Experts recommend a few things to keep in mind and a few common mistakes to avoid to make your car last longer. If you stick around till the end of the video, we’ll tell you how you can fix a cracked windshield with garlic. Having the correct tire pressure is a sort of “Goldilocks” situation. If it gets too low OR too high, you can have serious problems. Don't forget about seasonal tire changes and remember to swap your front and rear tires at least once a year. Sharp acceleration and abrupt braking might feel like fun, but they’re actually extremely harmful to vehicles. If you decide to park on an incline and put your car in Park, it puts too much pressure on the transmission. In rare cases, it can even become dislodged or break down. So the best option is to use the emergency brake. With the help of the symbols on the car's dashboard, your car can tell you when something's wrong, like when the engine's overheated, something's wrong with the electrical system, or the brake fluid level is too low. Go to an auto repair shop as soon as possible to save yourself from expensive repairs or even an accident. Weighing your vehicle down excessively does nothing good for the car's suspension, steering, transmission, tires, and engine. Plus, overloading increases fuel consumption and makes the car more difficult to handle. Remember that cars, just like people, need regular check-ups and “health” tests. Music: Retro - Wayne Jones https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS Keep your tire pressure in-check. 0:40 Take it easy on the gas and brake pedals. 2:03 Park correctly. 2:42 Don't ignore the dashboard. 3:54 Don't forget about vehicle inspections and repairs. 5:13 Avoid overloading. 6:03 Don't overload the clutch. 6:50 Bonus: fix a cracked windshield with garlic! 7:18 SUMMARY -Check your tire pressure at least twice a month (but once a week is even better). While adding air to your tires, make sure they aren't warm to the touch and don't overfill them. -If you’re a fan of sharp acceleration and abrupt braking, remember both of them are actually extremely harmful to vehicles. Plus, you’re just burning more gas than you need to. -Avoid throwing the car into Park before coming to a full and complete stop. The same goes for putting the car into Drive or Reverse before stopping fully: don’t do it. -If you notice the engine light flashing while you're driving, slow down right away because this might be a sign of a serious problem. The brake light lets you know that somewhere in the braking system something has gone wrong. -Check your car’s manual to find out how often you should change your oil or air filter and remember that a lot of it depends on your driving habits. Get yearly inspections and keep in mind that routine maintenance will depend on the season and the mileage. -Get acquainted with the maximum load capacity for your car and stick to it. Try to get rid of all of the useless stuff in your car. -Don't hold the clutch in at long traffic lights. During short stops, shift to Neutral and press the clutch right before you start moving. -Take a clove of garlic, cut it lengthwise down the middle, rub the cut side over the crack, and wipe away the excess juice with a paper towel or napkin to keep the crack from getting worse until you can get it repaired. What Happens To An Engine Without Oil?

04:52
What happens if your car runs out of engine oil? Watching Cars Warm Up In Infrared - https://youtu.be/n_CQzBc6GbM Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 Watch A Mercedes Run With No Oil On A Track (Car Throttle) https://youtu.be/CfipRXooCTM Products Used: FLIR T1K Camera - http://amzn.to/2mgV8XS Affordable Thermal Camera - http://amzn.to/2j2gnNh in this video we’re going to be discussing what happens when an engine has no oil. As a demonstration, we’ll be viewing an engine with and without oil running. This is the exact same engine on the left and the right, on the left with oil, and on the right without. Both engines will start at the exact same time, but the video on the right was filmed 24 hours after the video on the left, allowing for the engine to completely cool. This is a 212 cc air-cooled single-cylinder Harbor Freight engine. There are five points we’re monitoring on each engine. Point one is the crankcase, below the level at which oil will rest. Point two is the top of the crankcase, where there obviously won’t be any oil resting near. Point three is the air-cooled cylinder bore. Point four is the exhaust pipe exiting the cylinder before entering the muffler, and point 5 is the valve cover. This is a pushrod style valve train with overhead valves. Opening the crankcase reveals the permanent damage which occurred. First of all, look at the small amount of oil that didn’t quite make it out while draining. It’s quite dark, and this is after a 15 minute run with oil, and 15 minutes without, in a brand new engine. The oil which remained in the drained engine is clearly quite dirty, and actually it has quite a bit of metal content in it, as you can see reflecting as I move around the towel. Examining further, I removed the connecting rod cap from the crankshaft. This is the bearing the crank rotates on. You can see the scored, less reflective surface of the cap. Indeed, you can see the scratches on the crankshaft as well. I would expect to see similar issues with the camshaft and cylinder bore as well. 5 Things You Should Never Do In A Turbocharged Vehicle

08:38
5 Things You Should Never Do In A Turbocharged Car 5 Things You Should Never Do Playlist - https://goo.gl/SxoUi7 Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 1. Do not run the engine hard after start-up. Most people know you should let your engine warm up before running it hard, but many cars only have coolant gauges. Engine oil tends to take longer to heat up, because you don’t have a thermostat like the coolant does, which isolates the coolant in the engine block and regulates its temperature. Oil that isn’t heated up won’t flow as fast as oil at operating condition, which means you’ll have less protection at engine start up. This is especially true for turbocharged vehicles, because you also have oil feeding the bearings of the turbocharger, which spins at insanely high RPM and produces significant heat, so you want to make sure you have proper oil flow through the turbo. It will be different for every car, but it could be an additional several minutes before your oil temperature is near your engine coolant temperature. 2. Don't shut the car off immediately after running it hard. You’re going to have hot spots where the engine components, and especially the turbocharger, are still significantly hotter than your engine oil temperature. If you shut off the engine, the oil no longer flows, and thus pockets of the oil are going to be heated up to very high temperatures. These high temperatures break down the oil, and also burn up and evaporate the light end of the oil, leaving behind a heavier oil that won’t have ideal flow characteristics. This reduces your engine oil life, and also means you might have less protection at start-up. 3. Don’t lug the engine. Low Engine Speed, High Load Operations. First, this isn’t ideal because you’re telling your engine to move your vehicle quickly when it’s at a huge gearing disadvantage. Second, when your engine tries to produce more power at low engine speeds, it may be able to inject more fuel, but not ingest enough air. As a result, you’ll have a highly rich mixture and this can lead to poor emissions, damaging your catalytic converter, and seeing black smoke come out your exhaust. Third, regarding damaging your engine, this can cause low speed pre-ignition. LSPI is a when you have pre-ignition of your air fuel mixture (before your spark ignites it) and is becoming a more common phenomenon with small turbocharged engines running at low engine speeds with high load. It’s a dangerous condition that can cause engine damage, such as broken spark plugs or cracked pistons, as a result of extremely high pressures which occur due to significantly advanced ignition timing. It’s also very challenging to detect, and can’t be avoided through ignition timing or changing the spark plug’s heat range. 4. Don't use low octane rating fuel, especially if the car has been modified. Turbocharged cars tend to have higher pressures and temperatures within the combustion chamber, which is why they have reduced compression ratios to compensate. If your car is modified, you can keep it reliable by running a rich mixture and using high quality, high octane fuels. Obviously reducing boost and retarding the engine timing will do this as well, but of course you’ll be reducing performance. There are knock sensors to help minimize any engine problems, and so they’ll retard timing if it senses knock will occur. 5. Don’t floor it coming out of a corner. In this one I just wanted an excuse to talk about slip angles. Turbocharged cars have some varying amount of turbo lag, new ones are much better. My point is this, as you’re coming out of a corner, your tires have some loading on them, whether your car is FWD, RWD, whatever. Now this doesn’t apply to AWD quite as much, but it’s still an issue. Your car’s stability is a result of your front tire slip angles being nearly identical to your rear tires slip angles. So long as this is true, your car moves on its targeted path. If you floor a turbocharged car, especially cars with high amounts of turbo lag, you get slammed with torque fairly surprisingly. This shock of torque increases the demand of the driven tires, increasing their slip angle. If you have a significant increase of slip angle of just one set of tires, front or rear, you end up with understeer for FWD, or oversteer for RWD. All of this is to say that your throttle application exiting the corner is very important, especially in 2WD turbo vehicles, where turbo lag can easily cause an understeer or oversteer situation. Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition. Engines playlist - http://goo.gl/ZSEIU4 Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 What is the future of gasoline engines, or internal combustion engines? HCCI is an alternative to traditional gasoline or diesel engines, which doesn't use a spark or fuel injector for ignition. Instead, a homogeneous mixture of air and fuel is ignited simply by compression, resulting in lower combustion temperatures meaning improved emissions and better efficiency. 9 Proper Steps to Break-In New Mercedes or AMG During First 1k miles!

10:23
This demo is based on Mercedes-Benz, but also applies to the majority of all other vehicles. "Have you seen all those people who are always having problems with their car? And the only problem is: they don't know how to break-in their cars in the first place! " I still remember when my dad always said: "Son, Make sure to warm up your engine in the morning before you start driving". Was he right? .. Do you need to warm up your car? We'll check a little later.. Question: "Why do you need to break-in brand new vehicle anyway?" Let's compare the brand new car to a new-born baby. If you give baby milk, vitamins. right healthcare and good-looking nurse - the end result will be: happy and healthy grown man. The same goes with the car. If you pay money for the brand new car and give a proper break-in, instead of milk; the end result will be a happy and trouble-free vehicle... Question: "Did you know brand new Mercedes-Benz and AMG vehicles are pre-programmed to be in the learning mode during the first 1,000 miles (1500 km) of driving?" And Teach-In procedure must be performed. To answer this question let's look into Mercedes-Benz Operator's Manual. Here is excerpt: "Full system effectiveness is not reached until the end of this teach-in procedure." Let's look at some steps on how to break in a new car: 1. Drive at varying speeds for the first 1,000 miles (1,500 km); 2. Avoid heavy loads, driving at full throttle; 3. Change gears timely; 4. Do not manually downshift to slow the car; 5. Avoid flooring the pedal; Additional steps must be performed for AMG vehicles: 6. Do not drive faster than 85 MPH (140 km/hr) during first 1,000 miles; 7. Allow only maximum engine speed of 4,500 rpm; 8. Change gears in a good time; 9. Only drive in Comfort program mode. So let's go back to the original question in this video: Do you have to warm up the engine before you start driving? And the answer is NO. If we look at Mercedes-Benz Operator's Manual, we can see the following: "Do not warm up the engine, when the vehicle is stationary! Drive off immediately." F1 Engine - Explained

08:18
How do F1 engines work? What are the differences between a Formula One engine and a normal car engine? In this video I give a basic overview of F1 engines, and talk about some of the things that separate them from your everyday daily driver's engine. One major difference is in the valvetrain, F1 engines have used pneumatic valves, which I will go over. NOTE: Volumetric efficiency of over 100% is possible in naturally aspirated engines, thought it is not necessarily common in everyday road cars. How to run in a modern engine (plus nuts - yessss!) | Auto Expert John Cadogan

21:54
This report is inspired by the following viewer question: "I have now signed on the bottom line for a Kia Sorento purchased via your Georgie partners. Do you have any advice on running in a new Kia Sorento diesel when brand new? I understand that for the first 1000 kilometres new vehicles should be nurtured with no sudden acceleration (say at traffic lights) no driving over 100 kilometres an hour, no high revving, etc. Some vehicles have motors 'run in' at the factory, and perhaps Kia does this? We have the towbar fitted to start towing as soon as we can. Do you have a recommendation here?" - Chris And the obligatory nut: "The climate has always changed. Shove ya propaganda indoctrination up ya bum. It's a fucking car channel john, not the United Nations Agenda 2030 hour. I'll skip this one, you've pissed me off again." - Innocent Bystander

The Truth About Engine Oil Consumption in a Modern Car | Auto Expert John Cadogan | Australia

10:11
Oil Consumption in Modern Cars: The Truth Does your car have a drinking problem? A destructive relationship with engine oil? Is the manufacturer brushing you off as it churns and burns oil between services? Plenty of people complain to me about this. Here are the facts. Now look - there’s nothing I like more than the repetitive application of lubricant. Maintenance is very important. Frankly I get several hundred complaints by e-mail about alleged excessive oil consumption. Often in relation to Audi, Holden Colorado, and Subaru. Luke’s question on this is typical - I’m just picking his because it’s the most recent. And he’s literate - he uses sentences and everything, which is not always the case. “I have a 2014 Holden Colorado with 67,000km on the clock. I’ve owned it since new and it is using two litres of oil between 15,000km services. Car has been fully serviced. Holden has replaced the dipstick and continued to monitor it for a year and have now put 5W40 in it at the last service but it hasn’t helped. I have recently been told in writing by my local Holden dealer that “Anything below 2.5l per 10,000km is considered acceptable, and additional top ups between services are not uncommon. Is this reasonable?” To do this question justice we need to do a crash course in engine design basics - past versus present: In the past, engines were built tight, and they consumed, essentially, no oil for years (if you maintained them). Then, inevitably, wear would overcome them, and the piston rings and/or valve guides would give up the ghost. After 150,000 kilometres, or whatever, mechanical wear would take over, blow out the clearances, and as a consequence, a great deal of engine oil would burn, and every takeoff at the lights would make you look like the Batmobile in ‘smokescreen’ mode. Wear would then accelerate and your engine would be a dead man walking. Then, about a decade ago, maybe 15 years, manufacturers started to get real serious about fuel consumption, and there are three ways to tackle that. The easiest way is just to make cars lighter - but since that also makes them, typically, smaller, and less brimming with the cool toys you expect, manufacturers are disinclined to do that. Cars keep getting bigger and heavier. The second way is to improve combustion efficiency - which is what variable valve timing, direct injection, variable geometry turbos, etc. - all the cool engine engineering toys - are about. Burning the same amount of fuel and extracting more useful work from it. And the last way - in many ways the most accessible way to make real efficiency gains - is to tackle resistance. Things like aerodynamics, rolling resistance, and internal friction. Losses. These are the things you can’t feel, but which your engine needs to battle every rev, just to get your car out of the blocks and moving. Internal friction in your engine is one of those big-ticket ‘losses’ items. So, in an effort to reduce fuel consumption, manufacturers have for several years now waged war on internal friction in engines, and they’ve wound back the tension in the piston rings and valve guides, in particular. This saves fuel (and it saves you money - let’s not forget that while you’re bitching about oil consumption - you’re saving money on fuel here) but it also opens the door to oil consumption. And this understandably sets off warning bells in some owners’ minds at least. This oil consumption is a feedback effect - looser piston rings and valve guides slide easier but allow some oil to be burnt. Classic example of an overall positive change also generating negative feedback.

Hellephant 1000 Horsepower 426 Crate HEMI Engine Unveiling

07:48
The 1968 Dodge Charger, one of the most iconic vehicles ever built by FCA US, is reimagined with modern elements from the current Dodge Charger SRT and the Dodge Challenger SRT lineup to create a unique package for showcasing the Mopar brand’s new “Hellephant” 426 Supercharged Mopar Crate HEMI engine and kit. The 1968 Dodge “Super Charger” Concept is adapted to accommodate the “Hellephant” engine, enabling the classic ride to slam 1,000 horsepower to the pavement through a stock T-6060 manual six-speed Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat transmission. The custom “De Grigio” Grey Metallic classic 1968 Dodge Charger, which is marking its 50th anniversary in 2018, feeds the “Hellephant” fresh air through a supersized hood scoop modeled on that of the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. The hood features fiberglass construction on the outside with inner-steel construction inside carried over from the original vehicle. The 1968 Charger’s pop-up headlamp design is tweaked to plant Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat headlamps permanently behind the grille. The original’s door handles and drip rails are shaved away, creating a clean, streamlined appearance. Front door vent windows are removed and replaced with a one-piece side glass. The 1971 Duster mirrors add a more modern appearance. The 1968 Dodge “Super Charger” Concept assumes a “wide body” stance thanks to front and rear fiberglass wheel flares painted “De Grigio” Grey Metallic body color. The front wheels push forward two inches to accommodate the flares and shorten the Charger’s overhang, extending the classic’s wheelbase from 117 inches to 119 inches. Front wheels are stock 20 x 11-inch Devil’s rims pulled from the Challenger SRT Hellcat, while the rears are upsized 21 x 12-inch custom-milled aluminum Devil’s wheels. The body drops 2.5 inches in the rear and 3.5 inches in the front to aggressively hug the pavement. Six-piston Brembos deliver a decisive stopping-power advantage over the 1968 brakes. Custom fiberglass front and rear bumpers are flushed up and shortened cross-car to provide an integrated design. The custom fiberglass front chin splitter takes influence from the Demon, while the custom rear spoiler is inspired by the modern Charger R/T. The trunk key cylinder lock is shaved and the Satin Black fuel door embellished with a custom-milled aluminum “Hellephant” medallion, one of many unique design touches incorporated throughout the “Super Charger” Concept. Vehicle graphics and badging are Satin Black vinyl decals, including the “Hellephant” logo on the front fenders, “Super Charger” badging above the doors and classic tail stripes at the rear. The Product Design Office (PDO) team let their imaginations run wild at the tail of the ’68 Charger. The lower exhaust tips are eliminated and replaced with Alfa Romeo Stelvio 5-inch dual-walled exhaust tips re-engineered to run through the taillamp housing. The brake lights have been uniquely reconfigured with LED lights that glow around the exhaust tips. Inside, door panels and interior trim are Satin Black with the unique “Hellephant” milled medallion applied on the upper door panels. The Dodge Viper steering wheel also carries the “Hellephant” medallion at its center. The instrument panel insert is “De Grigio” Grey Metallic body color and the dash is customized with a full array of Mopar gauges. The body-color center console holds a manual shifter from the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, as well as the ignition button and toggle switches for the headlamps, wipers, fog lights and hazard lights. The stock front seats have been replaced with Dodge Viper seats re-wrapped in Alcantara leather accented with red stitching and are fitted with four-point Sabelt black racing harnesses. The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon seat delete option opens up the rear and also sheds weight while making space for a custom 2-inch roll cage designed to follow the profile and harmonize with the shape of the day light opening (DLO). A Challenger SRT Demon net allows for storage of racing equipment such as helmets and gloves. A black Challenger SRT Hellcat carpet covers the rear of the interior, while the front features custom floor mats modified from the current Charger SRT and Mopar pedal kits for the Challenger. Mazda Creates The Holy Grail Of Gasoline Engines - HCCI SkyActiv-X

07:18
How Mazda's Spark Controlled Compression Ignition Engine Works How HCCI Engines Work - https://youtu.be/OVWZFdb_AGc Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 Mazda may have solved the mystery of HCCI engines with their latest engine to be introduced in 2019, SkyActiv-X. The engine uses a spark plug to overcome the challenges generally associated with HCCI engines. The engine will be capable of running on compression only, or using a spark plug to control timing. Compression ignition gasoline engines are 20-30% more efficient, yet have much cleaner emissions than diesel engines as they burn cooler, limiting the amount of NOx. From Mazda's Press Release regarding SkyActiv-X: "Technological innovations - SKYACTIV-X is the world’s first commercial gasoline engine to use compression ignition, in which the fuel-air mixture ignites spontaneously when compressed by the piston - A proprietary combustion method called Spark Controlled Compression Ignition overcomes two issues that had impeded commercialization of compression ignition gasoline engines: maximizing the zone in which compression ignition is possible and achieving a seamless transition between compression ignition and spark ignition. Features - This new proprietary combustion engine combines the advantages of gasoline and diesel engines to achieve outstanding environmental performance, power and acceleration performance. - Compression ignition and a supercharger fitted to improve fuel economy together deliver unprecedented engine response and increase torque 10–30 percent over the current SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine.3 - Compression ignition makes possible a super lean burn4 that improves engine efficiency up to 20–30 percent over the current SKYACTIV-G, and from 35–45 percent over Mazda’s 2008 gasoline engine of the same displacement. SKYACTIV-X even equals or exceeds the latest SKYACTIV-D diesel engine in fuel efficiency. - With high efficiency across a wide range of rpms and engine loads, the engine allows much more latitude in the selection of gear ratios, providing both superior fuel economy and driving performance." Is Synthetic Motor Oil Better For Your Car?

07:23
Is synthetic motor oil better than conventional oil? Synthetic Motor Oil Myths - https://youtu.be/Se8-W7rK0H4 Thank you to Pennzoil for bringing me out to the 2016 Canadian GP and sponsoring this video! This video has been compensated by GarageMonkey and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 The viscosity of an oil is its resistance to flow. A greater viscosity means more resistance to flow, or a thicker oil. A lower viscosity means a thinner oil. Before understanding the benefits of synthetic motor oils, like this Pennzoil Platinum derived from natural gas, we first need to understand the rating system used for motor oils. You’ll often hear 5W-30, or 0W-20 as ratings used in cars today. These are multi-grade viscosity oils, meaning their viscosity grade changes with temperature. The first number, followed by a W, is the cold rating (W stands for Winter), and this means the oil behaves like an SAE 5 grade motor oil (using 5W-30 as the example) while cold, but at operating temperature, at about 100 degrees C, it operates like an SAE 30 grade motor oil. Now 30 is higher than 5, so initially it may seem that the oil would get thicker at higher temperatures, which is obviously not the case. A straight SAE 30 grade oil will be thicker at lower temperatures, as will a 5 grade oil. Even though a 30 weight oil is thicker than a 5 weight oil, at 100C the 30 weight will be thinner than a cold 5 grade oil. Low viscosity at low temperatures is important, because this is where a significant amount of engine wear occurs, so it’s critical to maximize oil flow to protect the engine. At colder temperatures, thinner oils will flow better and thus offer better protection. For a conventional oil, for example while creating a 5W-30 oil, you’ll start with a base oil similar to an SAE grade 5 motor oil, and include additives to alter the viscosity rating. To improve low temperature flow, pour point depressants (PPDs) are added. To increase the viscosity at high temperatures, viscosity index improvers (VIIs) are added. VI improvers are polymers which expand in heat, making it more difficult for flow, thus increasing the viscosity. Synthetic oils, however, can have base oils which are already formulated as a multi-grade oil, meaning you don’t necessarily need additives, or as much additives, to alter the viscosity at different temperatures. The major benefit here is that additives tend to break down over time, so synthetic oils will maintain their original viscosity properties much better throughout the engine oil drain interval versus conventional oils. (Diagram illustrating viscosity vs temperature) If you were to plot two 5W-30 motor oils, one conventional and one synthetic, at the beginning of the oil change interval, they would have similar viscosity properties. At the end of the interval, however, the synthetic would act nearly identical to the original oil, while the conventional oil would be thicker at low temps, and thinner at high temps. Now does this mean that with synthetic motor oils you can extend your engine oil drain interval? No! It just means your engine is better protected throughout the engine oil drain interval. There are still additives (anti-wear, dispersants, anti-foam, detergents, rust inhibitors, corrosion inhibitors) which wear out over time, so you should always change at whatever interval your owners manual suggests.
