The French eat long and well. They have some positive eating habits that everyone could learn from. They eat high quality ingredients, not processed ones and their ingredients tend to be far less processed than in the United States. Having small amounts of high quality food including meat, vegetables and fruits, cheese, and even sweets. Meals are not only more nutritious than their fast food counterparts, but the food tastes exponentially better. Another French lesson when it comes to healthy eating is that French don't eat food on the go. Sit down breakfasts, lunches, and dinners are totally ingrained in the French culture. Family meals, usually on Sundays, start with an appetizer, a main dish, followed by a selection of cheeses with a green salad, before moving on to desserts and finishing the whole thing with coffee. It may sound like a lot but the portions are smaller...Food is made to be savoured and it's also made to be eaten at the table. Unfortunately, as the gentleman at 4:19 is expressing, certain food such as seafood has become unaffordable to the younger generation who earn less. It is very true that globalisation has led to a change in food options in France. Fast food chains have been springing up around France in the past few decades and they became the choice of food for those who can't afford to cook a meal at home and have to rely on lower quality food at lower prices. Making healthy food choices when shopping is key to staying on track with your nutrition. Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, CSSD, FAND gives you pointers on how to shop at your local health food store. Not all items at your local health food store are healthy. Make sure to keep that in mind while grocery shopping and don’t be misled by food labels that sound healthy. Certain foods have a healthy image or "health halo" because they’re labeled as fat-free, whole grain, gluten-free, low-fat or no sugar added but while the labels may sound good, they may be distracting you from the whole story. To learn more about ‘health halos’ check out this VIDEO: http://hrbl.me/1DklE4a Susan headed to a local health food store to pick up a few items and here’s what she found: • All-natural ginger ale – The package on the ginger ale said “no high fructose corn syrup, sweetened with cane sugar, no artificial flavors or colors.” That may sound pretty healthy but when you look at the nutrition facts panel and take a look at the calories and sugar content, you will find it actually has more sugar and calories than a similar ginger ale from a regular grocery store. • Natural Gel Snack – The ingredients listed on this item were sugar, citric acid and natural flavors. This was advertised as a “vegan, fat-free, dairy-free, no artificial colors” item. Compared to the nutrition panel on a similar product at the regular grocery store, you would find that this one from the health food store has a little more sugar and calories because the serving size is larger. • ‘Fudge Mint’ Cookies – These cookies were labeled as having “no hydrogenated oils, no artificial preservatives or flavors, no high fructose corn syrup, all natural ingredients.” On the nutrition panel the ingredients listed included sugar, palm oil, and white flour. Despite the ‘healthy’ food labels on the packaging the fat and calories per serving is nearly identical to a very similar cookie that you might pick up at your regular grocery store. • Organic white bread – The packaging on the bread stated the bread was made with refined wheat flour. When a food is labeled as having wheat flour it doesn’t necessarily mean it was made with 100% wheat flour. The bread was labeled as “made with organic cane juice, organic oat fiber, organic oil, and sea salt.” The packaging also claimed the bread had 1g of whole grain per serving, that’s about a quarter of a teaspoon. If organic ingredients are important to you then this would be a good choice for white bread. But pay attention to the nutrition facts panel. The calories, fiber, and ingredients in this organic white bread is almost the same as the regular white bread you’d find at a regular grocery store. • Organic potato chips – These chips were made with organic potatoes, organic vegetable oil, and sea salt. The nutrition facts panel on these organic potato chips compared to the nutrition facts panel on a bag of regular potato chips is exactly the same for ingredients, calories and fat. If you’re grocery shopping at a health food store and find yourself swayed by the labels on the packaging, make sure to take the time to read the nutritional facts panel. In this video I want to talk about the simple secret to weight loss, and when it comes to weight loss I often think about the late movie director Michael Winner. He directed the Death Wish film starring Charles Bronson, amongst others. He was also a restaurant critic for a leading Sunday newspaper in the U.K. At one point in his life when he was in his 60s he put on a lot of weight, probably eating all those meals in restaurants, I would presume. But he managed to shed it very quickly and somebody asked him whatÕs the secret to weight loss and he says, there's no secret, just exercise more and eat less, and he had quite a point. Find out why oatmeal isn’t always a healthy option. Although oatmeal sounds like a healthy and filling option when you’re looking for food on the go, it can actually contain a surprising number of calories – especially if you opt for all the extras! Oatmeal tends to be a fairly healthy breakfast or snack option when you limit the amount of toppings you add. Adding extra toppings to your oatmeal could mean unnecessary extra calories. Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, CSSD, FAND, explains the nutritional value of a portion of oatmeal you may find at a local coffee shop. When you’re inside the coffee shop contemplating what you’ll eat, oatmeal, because of its relatively healthy reputation, sounds like the better alternative to a pastry or a bagel. And it certainly can be – but watch out for adding topping after topping! Many oatmeal portions are offered with sugar or honey, chopped roasted nuts, a handful of dried fruit and even whipped cream. Let’s take a closer look: Basic oatmeal: 170 calories Sweetened blueberries: 50 calories Chopped almonds: 85 calories Brown sugar: 50 calories Whipped cream: 120 calories Total for a loaded bowl of oatmeal = 475 calories That’s not all. The very same bowl of oatmeal has 23 grams of fat and 27 grams of sugar. If you measure the amount of sugar in teaspoons, it would be nearly seven teaspoons. So if you do decide to grab some hot cereal, make sure you keep in mind how quickly calories can add up with fun and flavorful toppings. Today I'm sharing the simple healthy eating habits that I use every day. These are the eating habits I use to stay healthy. I don't prescribe to a diet to be healthy or lose weight because I think it's restrictive and isn't something that is easy to stick to. I'm OK eating fats, sugars, and calories, but it's just about doing it in a healthier way. So, these healthy eating habits are something you can easily adopt in your everyday eating. IMPORTANT: I want to note this isn't all about weight loss. I'm not saying I was overweight before at all. But, I wasn't eating healthy or nourishing my body. I ate unhealthy portions and unhealthy foods. The reason why they are this way, is not because they have good genes or they are just lucky. More often than not, it’s actually because they are putting some effort about it. They follow programs and rituals that differ from the average person. Fortunately, you can become fit and healthy too if you follow the healthy habits and healthy lifestyle changes that follow in this video. No 1: Never shop your food when you are hungry or stressed. it’s not good neither for your wallet nor for your figure to shop excessively because you feel like eating and trying more things that you should. Write down your grocery list with all the essentials and stick to it and shop when you are feeling full instead. No 2: Eat a salad before you eat anything else. Sometimes you need some calories to avoid eating more calories afterwards. Eating a salad first will not only ease your appetite, it can help keep your blood sugar levels under control as well. That means that you will stay feeling full for longer without having to take an extra whopping amount of calories to ease your hunger. No 3: Cook at least half of your meals yourself. When we don’t cook things ourselves, we will resort in often unhealthy and fattening food choices like fast food and processed ready meals which are loaded with trans fats, salt, sugar and preservatives--all the things that are nasty for you. By cooking your own meals instead, you will be able to make smarter and healthier choices. No 4: Get rid of distractions while eating. A Food Quality and Preference study has found that people who listen to music or are exposed to noise, are tempted to eat more than those who don’t. Experts say this happens because distractions like these block the parts of your brain from sending the signal that you are full even when you are so you feel tempted to eat more. Perhaps that explains why we eat ourselves out in restaurants who play music. No 5: Exercise. Exercise is necessary for keeping your body active and keeping your weight under control, even without dieting. Business is no excuse for not getting active. Just a 20 minutes per day are enough to keep your body fit and active. No 6: Follow healthy sleep patterns. The quality of our sleep largely influences our mood, energy and bodily responses once we wake up. Make it a habit to sleep early at the same time each day for 7-8 hours to get the most of your sleep. Finally, don’t forget to keep a track of your progress. That includes your diet, exercise, and healthy life style changes you’ve made to lose weight or gain other health benefits.
