ORACLE/PLSQL: CASE STATEMENT The Oracle/PLSQL CASE statement has the functionality of an IF-THEN-ELSE statement. Starting in Oracle 9i, you can use the CASE statement within a SQL statement. The syntax for the Oracle/PLSQL CASE statement is: CASE [ expression ] WHEN condition_1 THEN result_1 WHEN condition_2 THEN result_2 ... WHEN condition_n THEN result_n ELSE result END --------- ARGUMENTS: expression is optional. It is the value that you are comparing to the list of conditions. (ie: condition_1, condition_2, ... condition_n) condition_1 to condition_n must all be the same datatype. Conditions are evaluated in the order listed. Once a condition is found to be true, the CASE statement will return the result and not evaluate the conditions any further. result_1 to result_n must all be the same datatype. This is the value returned once a condition is found to be true. NOTE: If no condition is found to be true, then the CASE statement will return the value in the ELSE clause. If the ELSE clause is omitted and no condition is found to be true, then the CASE statement will return NULL. You can have up to 255 comparisons in a CASE statement. Each WHEN ... THEN clause is considered 2 comparisons. Lets apply this function on emp table. Emp table has 3 dept numbers like 10,20 and 30. So if I want to display the different dept names based on ID, I have to use IF THEN ELSE condition. IF deptno=10 THEN "DEPT1" ELSE deptno=20 THEN "DEPT2" ELSE deptno=30 THEN "DEPT3" This entire IF block can be achived using CASE. I also include the latest trick that will make this easier if you are using SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2012. How do you compare a Datetime in SQL Server? A SQL Datetime stores both Date and Time. So when you are filtering using the SQL Where clause, you have to know if you Datetime is storing the time also. Let's take a look at the employee table in SQL Training Online Simple DB The column we are looking at is the hire date. I want to go after the person who was hired on February, 22 2005. So, I use the following SQL. select * from employee where hire_date='02/22/2005' Now, this works because we don't have any times stored in this column. But, if I change the record from 2005-02-22 00:00:00.000 to 2005-02-22 08:22:25.000 and rerun the query, you see that I don't get any results. That is because the value of 02/22/2005 is really 2005-02-22 00:00:00.000 and I just changed the hire_date to include a time other than 00:00:00.000. So, I have to tweak my query to use a greater than and less than sign. This works. But, to really understand what is going on, let me show you what SQL Server really sees. There are other ways, and in this StackOverflow article you can read more about these other ways. But, I want to point out a few. If you are working in SQL Server 2005 or earlier, the following is supposed to be the fastest performing way to do this. select datediff(dd,0, hire_date),* from employee where dateadd(dd,0, datediff(dd,0, hire_date)) = '2005-02-22' But, if you are working in SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2012, they have introduced an actual Date datatype that doesn't include the Time portion. Since this is the case, you can use the CAST function to remove the time from the Datetime. We can also say that SQL tables are kind of data structure which are used by database for efficient storage of data. To create a table in our database we use SQL CREATE TABLE command. SQL CREATE TABLE is a type of DATA DEFINITION LANGUAGE also known as DDL. To Create a table in your schema you will require CREATE TABLE system privilege. Let's start First of all right click on your connection in which you want to create a table and choose schema browser. However I prefer working with schema browser so let's skip to schema browser pane here from the first drop-down list you can choose connection name and in the second drop down list you can choose what database objects you want to work with we want to create a table thus I'll choose table and then click this arrow here and choose option for new table Ok we have created a table wizard first of all give a unique name to your table and add some column as well. For this, click the green plus button. Now we already have a column so give it some name. Including a trick to copy only a table schema in SQL Server. How do you copy a whole table in SQL Server? You often see the SQL INTO statement when you are using INSERT, but there is a special INTO statement in SQL Server that is used with the SELECT statement that allows you to make a copy of a table for development, testing, or whatever purpose you can think of. So, to start, let's take a look at the SQL Training Online Simple DB employee table. You can see that we have 14 records Now, all we have to do to make a copy of the table is to simply add the SQL INTO clause: SELECT * INTO EMPLOYEE_TEST FROM EMPLOYEE If we run that, you see that we made a copy of the table with all of the data. Now, I want to go ahead and empty the employee_test table and show you how to use the INSERT INTO. If you already have a copy of the table, (I will show you a shortcut in a minute on how to create a copy without data.) then you can use the following insert into statement: INSERT INTO EMPLOYEE_TEST SELECT * FROM EMPLOYEE After running that statement, you see that I have inserted data from the Employee table into the employee_test table. This is sometimes referred to as INSERT INTO SELECT. But, there is one trick that I have used throughout the years that is pretty cool. Sometimes, you want the table schema, but you don't want the data. Now, I know that you can use Management Studio to script out the table for you, but there is an easier way that is more flexible as far as I am concerned. That is to use the SELECT INTO FROM, but put the following in the WHERE clause: SELECT * INTO EMPLOYEE_TEST FROM EMPLOYEE WHERE 1=2 The 1=2 makes is so not data will come over, but you get the new table with the right column types. Best Way to Write Basic SQL Queries

SQL Server Query writing strategies is something I have yet to find in any book. When enthusiastic SQL students do this, they experience a revelation. The number of errors drops significantly and the speed at writing complex queries increases immediately. Knowing how to narrow down what we are looking for amongst a vast list of choices helps immensely. Grabbing the right tables first and then the fields second is akin to grabbing the right menu before ordering an item from it. In fact, one student named Tim took this back to his team of SQL developers and they immediately implemented this process. We are all used to following steps. Most of the time, actions are sequential from top to bottom or left to right. Other times we complete things in phases. The two phases we are going to use in this exercise apply to joining tables. This is easy to implement as we only need remember to organize first and clean up second. When visiting a new restaurant, we will ask to see the menu, because we want to see all they have to offer. The odds are that we might be interested in half of the items, but only need a few dishes for our group at the table. Looking at the menu is like starting a query with a ‘SELECT *’ statement. Once we have looked at all the fields, we narrow our choice(s) to only the items we want at the time. Sometimes restaurants have multiple menus. My favorite restaurant has a kids’ menu, an adult menu, a gluten-free menu and a drink menu. These menus were each gathered at our table. Ultimately, in my head, a selection was narrowed to what was needed. Phase I: Organize. When building a new query from many tables, we often find ourselves wondering, “Where do I start?” First, lay the steps out by identifying which tables contain the essential data. Second, get all the table joins working with a basic ‘SELECT *’ statement. Third, add any basic filtering criteria. Phase II: Itemize. Once all joins and criteria, such as SELECT, FROM and WHERE are working, we are ready for Phase II. This entails going back and changing our ‘SELECT *’ to an itemized SELECT field list as the final step. Let’s explore how this two-phase process of Organize and then Itemize can be a big time-saver. We are going to use one of the challenges from the last lab. In Lab 3.2 (Outer Joins), Skill Check 2, we needed to get four fields from two different tables. If we were to list all four desired fields and test one table at time, we will get an error as seen on the right side of the figure below. In the figure below we write a SELECT statement and part of the FROM clause. When completed, the FROM clause will have two tables, but for now we just want to get the Location table working. By using the ‘SELECT *’ strategy, we remove any possible errors from line 1. From there, we can focus on the more complicated logic used for joining tables together. We can add tables one at a time until everything is working. This is the Organize phase. NOTE: SELECT * never results in an Error message stating “invalid column name”, however; a SELECT list with itemized field(s) can have this error. After our query is organized and working, we can go back and itemize the SELECT field list to display only the fields that are necessary. This is done during Phase II (Itemize). The steps for this system are broken down as follows: Since SELECT is always the first statement in a query, it’s natural to want to write the field names before writing the FROM clause. However; we can save time and trouble by using the ‘*’ until the entire query is working properly. When this is complete, it is very easy to itemize the field list, with the confidence of knowing it will not cause any problems. SQL SELECT statement is the most commonly used command. To create a simple SQL SELECT Statement, you must specify the column(s) name and the table name. The whole query is called SQL SELECT Statement. The SQL SELECT statement returns a result set of records from one or more tables. A SELECT statement retrieves zero or more rows from one or more database tables or database views. In most applications, SELECT is the most commonly used Data Manipulation Language (DML) command. As SQL is a declarative programming language, SELECT queries specify a result set, but do not specify how to calculate it. The database translates the query into a "query plan" which may vary between executions, database versions and database software. This functionality is called the "query optimizer" as it is responsible for finding the best possible execution plan for the query, within applicable constraints. Expressions combine many arithmetic operators, they can be used in SELECT, WHERE and ORDER BY Clauses of the SQL SELECT Statement. Here we will explain how to use expressions in the SQL SELECT Statement. About using expressions in WHERE and ORDER BY clause, they will be explained in their respective sections. The operators are evaluated in a specific order of precedence, when more than one arithmetic operator is used in an expression. This can be very easily achieved using subquery as shown below. Select [Id], [Name], [Description] from tblProducts where Id not in (Select Distinct ProductId from tblProductSales) Most of the times subqueries can be very easily replaced with joins. The above query is rewritten using joins and produces the same results. Select tblProducts.[Id], [Name], [Description] from tblProducts left join tblProductSales on tblProducts.Id = tblProductSales.ProductId where tblProductSales.ProductId IS NULL In this example, we have seen how to use a subquery in the where clause. Let us now discuss about using a sub query in the SELECT clause. Write a query to retrieve the NAME and TOTALQUANTITY sold, using a subquery. Select [Name], (Select SUM(QuantitySold) from tblProductSales where ProductId = tblProducts.Id) as TotalQuantity from tblProducts order by Name Query with an equivalent join that produces the same result. Select [Name], SUM(QuantitySold) as TotalQuantity from tblProducts left join tblProductSales on tblProducts.Id = tblProductSales.ProductId group by [Name] order by Name From these examples, it should be very clear that, a subquery is simply a select statement, that returns a single value and can be nested inside a SELECT, UPDATE, INSERT, or DELETE statement. It is also possible to nest a subquery inside another subquery. According to MSDN, subqueries can be nested upto 32 levels. Subqueries are always encolsed in paranthesis and are also called as inner queries, and the query containing the subquery is called as outer query. Instead you should be using parameters. Notice in the following example, we are creating dynamic sql queries by concatenating parameter values, instead of using parameterized queries. This stored procedure is prone to SQL injection. Let's prove this by creating a "Search Page" that calls this procedure. Name it "DynamicSQLInStoredProcedure.aspx". Create Procedure spSearchEmployeesGoodDynamicSQL @FirstName nvarchar(100) = NULL, @LastName nvarchar(100) = NULL, @Gender nvarchar(50) = NULL, @Salary int = NULL As Begin Declare @sql nvarchar(max) Declare @sqlParams nvarchar(max) Set @sql = 'Select * from Employees where 1 = 1' if(@FirstName is not null) Set @sql = @sql + ' and [email protected]' if(@LastName is not null) Set @sql = @sql + ' and [email protected]' if(@Gender is not null) Set @sql = @sql + ' and [email protected]' if(@Salary is not null) Set @sql = @sql + ' and [email protected]' Execute sp_executesql @sql, N'@FN nvarchar(50), @LN nvarchar(50), @Gen nvarchar(50), @sal int', @[email protected], @[email protected], @[email protected], @[email protected] End Go On the code-behind page, use stored procedure spSearchEmployeesGoodDynamicSQL instead of spSearchEmployeesBadDynamicSQL. We do not have to change any other code. At this point run the application one more time and type the following text in the "Firstname" textbox and click the "Search" button. ' Drop database SalesDB -- Notice "SalesDB" database is not dropped, So in this case our application is not succeptible to SQL injection attack. Summary : Whether you are creating dynamic sql in a client application (like a web application) or in a stored procedure always use parameters instead of concatnating strings. Using parameters to create dynamic sql statements prevents sql injection.

To calculate total sales by product, we would write a GROUP BY query as shown below SELECT Product, SUM(SaleAmount) AS TotalSales FROM Sales GROUP BY Product Now if we want to find only those products where the total sales amount is greater than $1000, we will use HAVING clause to filter products SELECT Product, SUM(SaleAmount) AS TotalSales FROM Sales GROUP BY Product HAVING SUM(SaleAmount) ] 1000 If we use WHERE clause instead of HAVING clause, we will get a syntax error. This is because the WHERE clause doesn’t work with aggregate functions like sum, min, max, avg, etc. SELECT Product, SUM(SaleAmount) AS TotalSales FROM Sales GROUP BY Product WHERE SUM(SaleAmount) ] 1000 So in short, the difference is WHERE clause cannot be used with aggregates where as HAVING can. However, there are other differences as well that we need to keep in mind when using WHERE and HAVING clauses. WHERE clause filters rows before aggregate calculations are performed where as HAVING clause filters rows after aggregate calculations are performed. Let us understand this with an example. Total sales of iPhone and Speakers can be calculated by using either WHERE or HAVING clause Calculate Total sales of iPhone and Speakers using WHERE clause : In this example the WHERE clause retrieves only iPhone and Speaker products and then performs the sum. SELECT Product, SUM(SaleAmount) AS TotalSales FROM Sales WHERE Product in ('iPhone', 'Speakers') GROUP BY Product Calculate Total sales of iPhone and Speakers using HAVING clause : This example retrieves all rows from Sales table, performs the sum and then removes all products except iPhone and Speakers. SELECT Product, SUM(SaleAmount) AS TotalSales FROM Sales GROUP BY Product HAVING Product in ('iPhone', 'Speakers') So from a performance standpoint, HAVING is slower than WHERE and should be avoided when possible. Another difference is WHERE comes before GROUP BY and HAVING comes after GROUP BY. Difference between WHERE and Having 1. WHERE clause cannot be used with aggregates where as HAVING can. This means WHERE clause is used for filtering individual rows where as HAVING clause is used to filter groups. 2. WHERE comes before GROUP BY. This means WHERE clause filters rows before aggregate calculations are performed. HAVING comes after GROUP BY. This means HAVING clause filters rows after aggregate calculations are performed. So from a performance standpoint, HAVING is slower than WHERE and should be avoided when possible. 3. WHERE and HAVING can be used together in a SELECT query. In this case WHERE clause is applied first to filter individual rows. The rows are then grouped and aggregate calculations are performed, and then the HAVING clause filters the groups. I have seen lot of software developers, not just the beginners but even experienced developers, buidling their dynamic sql queries by concatenating strings instead of using parameters without realizing that they are opening the doors for SQL Injection. Imagine, what happens for example, if the user enters the following in the "Firstname" textbox. ' Drop database SalesDB -- With the above SQL injected into the "Firstname" textbox, if you click the "Search" button, the following is the query which is sent to SQL server. This will drop the SalesDB. Select * from Employees where 1 = 1 AND FirstName = '' Drop database SalesDB --' On the other hand, if you use parameters to build your dynamic SQL statements, SQL Injection is not an issue. The following input in the "Firstname" textbox, would not drop the SalesDB database. ' Drop database SalesDB -- The text the user has provided in the "Firstname" textbox is treated as the value for @Firstname parameter. The following is the query that is generated and executed. exec sp_executesql N'Select * from Employees where 1 = 1 AND [email protected]',N'@FirstName nvarchar(26)',@FirstName=N''' Drop database SalesDB --' We don't have this problem of sql injection if we are using stored procedures. "SearchPageWithoutDynamicSQL.aspx" is using the stored procedure "spSearchEmployees" instead of dynamic SQL. The same input in the "Firstname" texbox on this page, would generate the following. Notice, whatever text we typed in the "Firstname" textbox is treated as the value for @FirstName parameter. exec spSearchEmployees @FirstName=N''' Drop database SalesDB --' An important point to keep in mind here is that if you have dynamic SQL in your stored procedure, and you are concatenating strings in that stored procedure to build your dynamic sql statements instead of using parameters, it is still prone to SQL injection. If this is not clear at the moment don't worry, we will discuss an example of this in out next video. So in summary, while dynamic sql provides great flexibility when implementing complicated logic with lot of permutations and combinations, if not properly implemented it may open doors for sql injection. Always use parameters to build dynamic sql statements, instead of concatenating user input values. Another benefit of using parameters to build dynamic sql statements is that it allows cached query plans to be reused, which greatly increases the performance. We will discuss an example of this in our upcoming videos.

One can create PL/SQL units such as procedures, functions, packages, types, and triggers, which are stored in the database for reuse by applications that use any of the Oracle Database programmatic interfaces. The IF-THEN-ELSIF statement allows you to choose between several alternatives. An IF-THEN statement can be followed by an optional ELSIF...ELSE statement. The ELSIF clause lets you add additional conditions. When using IF-THEN-ELSIF statements there are few points to keep in mind. It's ELSIF, not ELSEIF An IF-THEN statement can have zero or one ELSE's and it must come after any ELSIF's. An IF-THEN statement can have zero to many ELSIF's and they must come before the ELSE. It can select data, insert new data, update existing data, and delete it. It can also be used to create, alter and delete tables and columns. The first SQL statement we'll learn is the select statement, which provides the basic method of extracting information from your database. The general syntax of a select statement is select COLUMNS from TABLE CONDITIONS. For Example, we can select the pop2008 column from the people table. We can also select all the columns from the people table with a '*'. Let's execute this last query. We'll begin by importing create_engine and creating an engine. Next, we will establish a connection by using the connect method on the engine. Then we can define our select statement and pass it to the execute method on the connection. This gives us an object we can use to fetch the results, which we assign to the variable results_proxy. Then we tell results_proxy to fetch all the results via the fetchall method. Now results will contain all of our data from the people table. Let's pause for just a moment and look at that object that the execute method gave us. That object is called a ResultProxy and it can be used in a variety of different ways to get the data returned by our query. When we use a fetch method, such as fetchall, on the ResultProxy, we get a ResultSet that contains the actual data we asked for in the query. This separation between the ResultProxy and the ResultSet allows us to fetch as much or as little data as we desire. We'll explore this more in a later section. Let's learn how to work with a ResultSet. In this example we are using the results from the prior query. We'll start by getting the first_row of the results using an index of 0. By printing the first row, we can see the data it contains. If we want to know what columns are in the row, we can find out by using the keys method. Finally, we print the value of the state column from the first row, by using the column name as an attribute on the row object. In the prior query example, we wrote a normal SQL statement as a string; however, manipulating a string to build more complex statements can be very overwhelming. The beauty of SQLAlchemy is that it allows us to assemble these complex statements in a Pythonic way. Pythonic refers to code that adheres to the idioms of Python's common guidelines and express its intent in a highly readable way. SQLAlchemy also hides the difference between database types so we can focus on the data we want to work with instead of the differences we might encounter in each database type. Let's rebuild the same query using SQLAlchemy. The first three steps of creating an engine and establishing a connection will be the same. After that, we will need to initialize our metadata and reflect the table as we did previously. Then in line 7, we build our select statement. Hang tight we'll talk more about this in a second. Finally, we execute the statement and fetch all the results. The SQLAlchemy select statement works the same as a SQL select statement, and in its most basic form takes a list of Column or Table objects. For example, stmt = select([census]) will select all the columns of all the rows in the census table. SQLAlchemy generates the same SQL statement we wrote by hand. We can see that by using the print() function on the statement which outputs SELECT * FROM census. Now it's your turn write several SQL queries, both as raw SQL and in the more Pythonic way using SQLAlchemy. We'll be continuing to use the US Census database. Let's practice.
