In this lecture for the Emory course "Botanical Medicine and Health", Dr. Cassandra Quave discusses some of the major classes of medically relevant compounds from plants. After this lecture, students should be able to answer the following questions: 1) What are the major classes of medically relevant natural products derived from plants? 2) What are plant secondary metabolites and why do plants make them? 3) How do indigenous people use sensory clues from plants to understand their chemistry and potential for medicinal use? This work examines the chemical synthesis of 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine (MDMA) from piperonal prepared via a catalytic ruthenium tetroxide oxidation of piperine extracted from black pepper. A variety of oxidation conditions were experimented with including different solvent systems and co-oxidants. A sample of prepared piperonal was successfully converted into MDMA via 3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl-2-nitropropene (MDP2NP) and 3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl-2-propanone (MDP2P) and the impurities within each product characterised by GC-MS to give a contaminant profile of the synthetic pathway. Interestingly, it was discovered that a chlorinated analogue of piperonal (6-chloropiperonal) was created during the oxidation process by an as yet unknown mechanism. This impurity reacted alongside piperonal to give chlorinated analogues of each precursor, ultimately yielding 2-chloro-4,5-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (6-Cl-MDMA) as an impurity within the MDMA sample. The methodology developed is a simple way to synthesise a substantial amount of precursor material with easy to obtain reagents. The results also show that chlorinated MDMA analogues, previously thought to be deliberately included adulterants, may in fact be route specific impurities with potential application in determining the origin and synthesis method of seized illicit drugs. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27162021 #cc2arms #VolunteerAgriculture Piperine is the naturally occurring alkaloid that gives the spice black pepper its characteristic biting taste.-http://www.chem.wisc.edu/deptfiles/genchem/Chm346/pdfs/B00.Piperineexpt.pdf

Today we are extracting citric acid from some large large lemons. Citric acid is quite a useful molecule in general, but I don't have any particular uses for it. It is mostly used as a pH buffering agent in chemistry and isn't use in direct synthesis. A buffering solution is a solution that resists pH change. It is useful in synthesis when you need to keep the pH relatively constant during a reaction. In my Cadaverine video, I used citric acid to make a pH buffer solution: https://youtu.be/C5hxFAwKIzs ------------------------------------------ Nile Red Keychain Shop: https://www.shapeways.com/shops/nile-red Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=2448989&ty=h Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NileRed1/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/NileRed2 Personal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nilered2/ Audio work: Kyle Gamble ([email protected])

We will be extracting some caffeine from coffee today! I used regular coffee grounds, but I think the process is actually faster and easier with instant coffee. In theory the yield should have been hovering around 300mg if ALL the caffeine was removed. However, I got around 10% of that (30mg). Apparently 10g makes about a cup of coffee, so a yield of 30mg isn't that horrible. Industrially, the caffeine is made synthetically and not extracted because it isn't really economical. The only time caffeine is extracted is for making decaffeinated coffee. But in that case, the end product is the coffee itself and the caffeine is a by-product. It is just much cheaper to make the caffeine directly. Ill be doing a future video on how to get caffeine from caffeine pills. Link to my patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=2448989&ty=h I am lazy and it is getting there. I have been spending most of my time focusing on filming new experiments, so I often forget about the other things.

Anthony from Art du Chanvre has built over 45 houses using hempcrete as a natural and sustainable insulation material. Hempcrete is made with a mix of hemp hurd (fibre), hydraulic lime (binder), and water. You can follow Anthony's building projects and get in touch with him on Instagram, or on his website here: https://www.instagram.com/du.chanvre/ https://duchanvre.com/ Hempcrete is not load-bearing, but it does provide insulation, thermal mass, and it regulates temperature and humidity. The R-value of hempcrete is R-2.1 per inch. Some other advantages of hempcrete is that it resists fire, mould, and vermin, and it eliminates the need for a vapour barrier and drywall (gypsum). Instead, you protect the hempcrete with natural lime plasters on the inside and on the outside of the building. Using hemp is a sustainable building material because it is carbon negative (it stocks more carbon in the fibre of the plant than is used to grow, harvest, and process it). We're very excited to learn about new and innovative ways to use natural building materials in conventional construction projects. Anthony says the cast-in-place construction method creates the highest quality of hempcrete, but pre-formed, pre-dried hempcrete blocks are more likely to allow hempcrete to go mainstream. In case you missed it, Anthony references a Bob Marley song at the end of the interview, comparing the conventional construction industry to the big tree, and the natural building industry to the small axe that will cut it down: https://www.wordsinthebucket.com/small-axe — Thanks for watching! Some compounds are adsorbed more strongly to the stationary phase than other and thus they will be eluted (washed down) the column at a very slow rate, thus can be separated on the basis of their elution rate accordingly. STATS Group were contracted by COOEC Subsea Technology Co.,Ltd. to provide temporary subsea isolation of the YaCheng pipeline, situated in the South China Sea. The 780km 28” subsea gas export pipeline supplies gas to Hong Kong and had become damaged by an anchor approximately 280km from Hong Kong, at a water depth of 90 meters. The dragged anchor damaged one of two subsea Pipeline End Manifolds (PLEM) and made a severe dent in the pipeline adjacent to the downstream PLEM. When the damage was identified, a temporary repair was implemented by installing a 400m 14” bypass between the PLEMs, which enabled the pipeline to continue operating at its normal operating pressure of 70bar, while the permanent repair was being engineered. As the pipeline is of crucial importance for the supply of gas to Hong Kong, the shut-down period for the repair needed to be kept as short as possible, therefore the repair had to be done without depressurising and flooding the entire pipeline. To enable safe recovery of both ends of the subsea pipeline onto the pipelay vessel, without depressurising the entire pipeline or allowing water ingress into the pipeline, STATS Tecno Plug and BISEP’s were installed into the pipeline to isolate only the sections of pipeline being recovered to the surface. To ensure diver and worksite safety, the Tecno Plug and BISEP had to provide; fully proved, fail-safe, Double Block and Bleed (DBB) isolation barriers from the pressurised pipelines, in compliance with industry guidance on Isolation and Intervention for Diver Access to Subsea Systems. In this video I explore the possibility of making DIY sound absorption panels on a budget, later comparing them to much more expensive acoustic foam. The results are pretty amazing! There have been many comments pointing out that my test only measures transmission and not reflection, so is essentially unsuitable for my initial testing goal. While this is partly true, testing reflection is pretty difficult to do in a home environment, and the only way to do it that I can think of would be to spend a long time in the middle of a field with a powerful speaker and mic rig, which is really beyond the scope of what I was prepared to do for the video. My tests are not rendered pointless however - it would do no good to have only measured reflection, as the thinnest lightest material would have won (like foam), as nothing would have bounced back. Reflection and transmission need to be tested together to measure how much sound passes through, and how much sound is reflected back - this should give an indication of how much sound is absorbed by a given material. Regardless, only testing the transmission doesn't affect the outcome of the project at all, as any sound waves reflected by the panels themselves would have theoretically bounced off the wall anyway - again this is why reflection wasn't tested, as it doesn't matter so much for a panel setup (though would matter very much for a vocal booth). Open to hear any thoughts about it though! Keep up the great discussion. :)

Roxy visits Pioneer Nuggets in Arlington, Washington to learn about their all-natural rosin extraction process. Rosin might have humble beginnings in the cannabis community, but it’s quickly gaining in popularity. Pioneer Nuggets founder Fitz Couhig and rosin expert Ethan give Roxy a tour and show her how they’ve developed a process that meticulously combines heat, pressure, and cannabis to create small batches of terpene-rich, flavorful rosin. After learning how it’s made, Roxy sits down with Fitz to sample the product. About the Series: Cannabis oil, hash oil, dabs, wax, shatter, BHO, and rosin: cannabis concentrates take on many forms, and seem to have about a thousand names. There’s a strong argument to be made about why concentrates might be the future of cannabis, but few are familiar with how these concentrates are crafted. Join host Roxy Striar as she travels the country to learn about the science (and art) of cannabis extraction. http://storyblocks.com/Cinecom - Remove echo and sound reflections from your home studio with this cheap DIY tutorial for creating your own sound absorption panels on a budget. We've all experienced bad sound recording somewhere. Most likely what we where experiencing was echo. When standing in an empty room, that echo is very clear. Definitely if you clap in your hands. In most other rooms, such as your living room, such echo is less noticeable. But when taking out a microphone we do realize that there're many sound reflections. So if you're building a home studio for recording music, podcasts, Youtube videos or whatever, you wanna take it to the extreme and acoustically treat it. In simple words, this comes down to absorbing the sound. Professional sound absorption panels, base traps or reflectors can cost a lot of money and are for most people not an option when starting out or creating a simple home studio. So you can either chose to put mattresses against your wall and place thick carpets on the floor. That might be the cheapest solution, but it's not so flattering. That's why we've came up with a very cheap and simple DIY solution for creating your own sound absorption panels. THE MATERIALS Rockwool or any other isolation panels. We used 100x60x5 cm (40x24x2 inch) panels that came in a pack of 8. Fabric of any color you like. We got the cheapest we found which was polyester. Wooden plates, but make sure they are very thin and lightweight. We got MDF material of 1 mm or 0.04 inch thick Staples and a good staples machine We advice to get everything from a local hardware store. SOUND ABSORPTION From our tests we can conclude that isolation panels work just as good as the more expensive Auralex or Primacoustic panels. We definitely used more as we where afraid they wouldn't absorb as much as the professional panels, but now we ended up a a little 'too dead' room. So we might bring down some panels in the future. For a natural sound, it's always good to have some kind of reflections. ✅ FROM THE VIDEO Article ► https://www.cinecom.net/audio-tutorials/diy-sound-absorption-panels-home-studio EMC Test Room ► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXVGIb3bzHI ✅ OUR EQUIPMENT My Custom GH5 Camera Rig ► https://www.cinecom.net/gear/custom-panasonic-gh5-camera-rig/ Cheap Green Key Equipment ► https://www.cinecom.net/gear/chroma-key-essentials/ All the Film Gear we use ► https://www.cinecom.net/gear ✅ LETS CONNECT! Ant "Gainz" LaVigne is here today to take you through his chest workout for muscle growth. If you're a hardgainer currently struggling against a speedy metabolism and a training program that's falling flat, you might be a little skeptical—and I wouldn't blame you. Unless you're one of those genetically blessed bodybuilding unicorns who can forge muscle as if by magic, packing on 10 lean pounds is very difficult to do naturally. And just to be clear, doing it naturally is the only way I'm interested in. On some of those more frustrating days, it might seem damn near impossible. But you can do it. We’re really excited to show you a little look behind the scenes on how NHV supplements are made. You may be familiar with how they help, but before our remedies make it to all the fur kids all over the world, there’s a lot that goes into the process, from researching our formulas, to using our proprietary extraction process for efficacy, to ensuring quality and safety and more. After sourcing our herbs from trusted suppliers in North America, Europe and India, the herbs are put in a vat and extracted over a period of days, sometimes weeks. Once the extraction process is completed, the liquid is strained, and the leftover sludge is composted. Herbs are amazing. They’re packed with nutritional value, and can have medicinal properties like antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action. They can even act specifically on an organ like the liver to help regenerate it (think Milk Thistle). But, in order to receive these amazing herbal benefits, putting a bit of an herb into a tea and drinking it simply doesn’t cut it. When developing formulations, it’s important to have an in depth understanding of every medicinal property a herb may have. Some herbs list dozens of potential medicinal properties, which come into effect only when they are extracted a certain way, used at certain quantities, or when used together with another herb synergistically. NHV formulations were developed by a holistic vet and a master herbalist, with advanced knowledge on the medicinal properties of herbs, their unique bio-active compounds, and extensive experience is the extraction and isolation of natural compounds. NHV also uses a proprietary extraction process to ensure the herbs retain their biochemical and phytoceutical properties. Our GMP certified facility ensures that all our herbs have certificates of analysis, and each batch is tested by our dedicated quality assurance technician before being tested again by a third-party lab to make sure that what all fur babies get is safe and effective. And now we move to bottling. We use amber glass medical bottles. These bottles help keep the integrity of the herbs, since light does not penetrate in. You may notice that your NHV supplement comes with a dropper, but the dropper is separate, and not in the actual bottle. The reason we do this, is that when the herbs are being extracted, we don’t use any preservatives or additives. Their sealed at a specific temperature, and in order to maintain their integrity and have a long shelf life without any preservatives or additives we heat seal the supplement without the dropper. A new HPLC approach for the analysis of charged analytes in complex mixtures such as natural products, food, body fluids and environmental probes. The results were so interesting that we decided to name this approach. We have named it FlipLC, because this process uses two columns: one analytical and one isolation column. The isolation column flips from a normal flow direction to a reverse flow direction during the same run.

There is a lot of information out there on Youtube about how to insulate a van, but very little of it is based on real research and long-term experience with real cold. After 15 years of living in a van--6 of those years in Anchorage, Alaska--I know and understand serious cold and the value of insulation. In this video I lay out in simple and clear terms the conclusions I've reached. In the next video I'll actually install the insulation. My deepest and most sincere thanks go to my good friend Terry who worked right beside me and guided me through this whole process. He had the patience to convince me to do things the right way as opposed to the fast and easy way. No matter how cheap your budget, you can learn something from this video about how to turn your car, van, caravan or RV into a mobile, tiny house on wheels! Many millions of square meters of flat roof are not yet green – this means wasting an enormous potential of living space. Flat roof systems consist of a supporting structure and several functional layers. Almost all these systems require an insulation layer. It warms in winter, cools in summer, saves energy, and reduces CO2 emissions. The classical layer structure of an insulated flat roof is shown in the video, together with the options and benefits of a heat insulation with the insulation material Neopor®. In 1997, BASF had presented this product, a further development of the classical insulation material Styropor®. Neopor contains small infrared absorbers and thus ensures that even more heat stays inside the building in winter. In the video the insulation process of the flat roof of a modern certified sustainable building in Ludwigshafen, Germany, with Neopor is illustrated. Next to its good insulation properties, the specific benefits of the material comprise low weight, high stability and a good price-to performance ratio.
