Six Months At Sea In The Merchant Marine

22:05
In this short documentary, I tried to answer some of the common questions that I usually get about shipping. The footage I took myself using fairly basic cameras that I could fit in my pocket while I was on the job as a deckhand. The story follows me on a six month journey around the world on a container ship which was on a run between New York and Singapore via the Suez Canal. This was my first time going to sea on a large ship so everything was relatively new to me, therefore please excuse the couple of shipping terms I misused (such as saying "license" when I should have said "credential"). I have been on many ships since and will continue to ship out for the foreseeable future. Thanks for watching. What i do on Merchant Navy | ABLE BODIED Seamen | Life at Sea

11:20
As a member of the deck crew, an Able-bodied Seaman (AB) has a varied role on board a ship, which is often physically demanding, and by its nature, all-weather. Able Seamen, as with any seafaring role, have to balance their family and work lives as they can be at sea for long periods of time. The flipside of those prolonged stretches at sea is lengthy leave periods, which makes seafaring a unique sector to work in. Am proud to be a Seafarer. Insight into Pumproom of Tanker Ship.mp4

05:49
The cargo control room, CCR, or cargo office of a tankship is where the person in charge (PIC) can monitor and control the loading and unloading of the ship's liquid cargo. Prevalent on automated vessels, the CCR may be in its own room, or located on the ship's bridge.[1][2] Among other things, the equipment in the CCR may allow the person in charge to control cargo and stripping pumps, control and monitor valve positions, and monitor cargo tank liquid levels. pumpman is an unlicensed member of the engineering department of a merchant ship.[1] Pumpmen are found almost exclusively on tankers, and on oil tankers in particular.[2] Variations on the title can include chief pumpman, QMED/pumpman, and second pumpman.[3] A pumpman performs all work necessary for the safe and proper operation of the liquid cargo transfer system.[1] This includes but is not limited to: liquid cargo transfer pumps, liquid cargo stripping pumps, liquid cargo coalesces and separators, strainers, filters, associated piping, valves, fittings, and deck machinery directly related to the transfer of liquid cargo.[1] Merchant mariners spend extended periods at sea. Most deep-sea mariners are hired for one or more voyages that last for several months; there is no job security after that. The length of time between voyages varies depending on job availability and personal preference.[4] At sea, a pumpman will usually work 8 to 12 hour days, 7 days a week.[4] People in water transportation occupations work in all weather conditions. Although merchant mariners try to avoid severe storms while at sea, working in damp and cold conditions often is inevitable. While it is uncommon nowadays for vessels to suffer disasters such as fire, explosion, or a sinking, workers face the possibility that they may have to abandon their craft on short notice if it collides with other vessels or runs aground. They also risk injury or death from falling overboard and hazards associated with working with machinery, heavy loads, and dangerous cargo. However, modern safety management procedures, advanced emergency communications, and effective international rescue systems place modern mariners in a much safer position.[4] Most newer vessels are air conditioned, soundproofed from noisy machinery, and equipped with comfortable living quarters. For some mariners, these amenities have helped ease the sometimes difficult circumstances of long periods away from home. Also, modern communications, especially email, link modern mariners to their families. Nevertheless, some mariners dislike the long periods away from home and the confinement aboard ship and consequently leave the occupation.[4] In the United States, the rate of unionization for these workers is about 36 percent, much higher than the average for all occupations.[4] Consequently, merchant marine officers and seamen, both veterans and beginners, are hired for voyages through union hiring halls or directly by shipping companies.[4] Hiring halls rank the candidates by the length of time the person has been out of work and fill open slots accordingly.[4] Hiring halls typically are found in major seaports.[4] Pumpmen employed on Great Lakes ships work 60 days and have 30 days off, but do not work in the winter when the lakes are frozen.[4] Workers on rivers, on canals, and in harbors are more likely to have year-round work.[4] Some work 8-hour or 12-hour shifts and go home every day.[4] Others work steadily for a week or a month and then have an extended period off.[4] When working, they usually are on duty for 6 or 12 hours and off for 6 or 12 hours. Those on smaller vessels are normally assigned to one vessel and have steady employment.

Inside Oil Tankers - Documentary Films

45:04
CLICK HERE - http://activeterium.com/1DCR - FOR MORE FREE DOCUMENTARIES Inside Oil Tankers - Documentary Films All over the world, tanker operations are constantly moving. Oil tankers are ships specially designed for the bulk transport of either unrefined crude oil or petrochemicals. Their size classes can range from coastal or inland tankers of a few thousand metric tons of deadweight (DWT) to a colossal amount of 550,000 DWT. These giant specialized ships transport approximately two billion metric tons of oil across the sea every year. Crude oil is one of the world's most consumed sources of energy. Oil tankers, therefore, play a significant role in the way the country operates. Because of the products they are built to carry, without proper maintenance, these mammoth ships of black gold can also pose a threat on the environment. To ensure that an oil tanker does not severely impact the environment, oil companies must employ an expert and highly experienced ship management service to oversee tanker operations. They must also routinely check their oil tankers for maintenance purposes. Fixing the smallest dent, scratch or crack can mean the difference between safe sailing across miles of seawater and a devastating oil spill. On board the ship, safety measures should be strictly imposed. Because of the hazardous - and often flammable - nature of the materials being transported, the possession of flammable objects should be avoided if not prohibited entirely to avoid accidents, which can threaten the lives of the people on the ship, as well as the surrounding marine life. Whether at sea or anchored at a dock, tanker operations and safety measures should still be strictly implemented to prevent the ship from negatively affecting the environment.

On July 21, 2017 the International Maritime Organization awarded Captain Michael C. McGee and Captain Michael C. Phillips, members of the Houston Pilots, as the recipients of the 2017 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea. Amusingly, in a post-accident interview with the US Coast Guard, the second pilot, who had been coordinating the firefighting effort, told investigators, “The harbor tugs, the guys on the boats . . . deserve a medal of meritorious service or whatever might be available. They did an outstanding job.” Okay, you get it. Everyone did a good job. Now here is what happened. On September 6, 2016 shortly after midnight, Captain McGee and Captain Phillips were scheduled to pilot the 810-foot-long tanker Aframax River at the Houston Ship Channel. While underway, the vessel experienced a mechanical failure and consequent loss of control, which caused the ship to strike two mooring dolphins (otherwise known as “moorings” — I’m not talking about cetaceans). As a result, a fuel tank ruptured causing a spill of 88,000 gallons diesel fuel that quickly ignited. The flames, on and around the ship, reached over 200 feet in height, and the raging fire quickly spread across the channel, threatening other tankers and nearby petrochemical facilities. Despite the imminent danger, both pilots remained at their stations on the bridge of the ship. Captain McGee managed to maneuver the stricken ship away from surrounding ships and facilities while Captain Phillips coordinated communications and firefighting efforts with the United States Coast Guard and numerous local fireboats. Captain Phillips at one point also had to drop the radios and charge a fire hose to fight and extinguish a fire raging on the port bridge wing. The fire was extinguished after 90 minutes, after which Captain McGee, using assist tugs, was then able to bring the damaged tanker safely to a mooring facility. Good work. The rest of the story is rather interesting.
