Six Months At Sea In The Merchant Marine

22:05
In this short documentary, I tried to answer some of the common questions that I usually get about shipping. The footage I took myself using fairly basic cameras that I could fit in my pocket while I was on the job as a deckhand. The story follows me on a six month journey around the world on a container ship which was on a run between New York and Singapore via the Suez Canal. This was my first time going to sea on a large ship so everything was relatively new to me, therefore please excuse the couple of shipping terms I misused (such as saying "license" when I should have said "credential"). I have been on many ships since and will continue to ship out for the foreseeable future. Thanks for watching. 2016 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at sea - Video coverage

03:25
Indian Master receives 2016 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea The Master of an oil tanker who says she was “just doing her job” has received the highest IMO bravery recognition for saving the lives of seven fishermen from a sinking fishing boat during a tumultuous storm in the Bay of Bengal in June 2015. “It is every seafarer’s and Master’s solemn duty and obligation to save souls in distress at sea. I just did what a seafarer should do for a fellow soul in distress at sea. Yes, it was an instant decision, but not without assessing the risks involved. I just did my duty,” said Captain Radhika Menon, Master of the oil products tanker Sampurna Swarajya. She was speaking after IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim presented her with the 2016 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea on Monday (21 November), during an emotional ceremony. Captain Menon is the first female captain in the Indian Merchant Navy and the first female to receive the IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea. Safety at Sea - SAS/ISAF - Seminar

02:13
For more information on SAS or ISAF please visit http://www.sailaweighllc.com Or http://www.ussailing.org/ for additional information. I had to attend the safety at sea seminar in order for Volvo to let me tryout for the OBR job. This is some of the footage I captured during my experience. Sponsored by http://soundclipstudio.com/ Sound engineer Sean Powers Produced and Edited by Justin Richard Edelman For photos please use this link https://1drv.ms/f/s!AiNdRMBQrf3egZR0SHsVKOExZ1u76A Interview with John Miller, USCG Merchant Marine Master with Sailing Endorsement Justin: Why are more races pushing the SAS certificate? John: It is a proven fact from data collected from World Sailing (formerly ISAF), RYA, US Sailing, USCG . . . Trained sailors have fewer accidents and when they do have an accident, the seriousness of the consequences are not as great as compared to those who have no training; simple logic.  World Sailing and RYA (Royal Yachting Association) have been leaders in the industry to push for both didactic and hands-on training for safety certification programs.  US Sailing has recently partnered with World Sailing to standardize safety programs globally.  In addition, World Sailing and ORR (Offshore Racing Rules) have codified safety training requirements in racing rules; the basis for individual event NOR's (Notice of Race).  Couple this with Marine insurers who have reviewed the data and are requiring compliance with NOR's and you have a perfect storm. Justin: Was there any particular event that caused the program to be put in place? John: Actually PacCup 2018 is requiring US Sailing 2 Day SAS with hands-on training or ISAF (equivalent program offered by World Sailing).  This is an upgrade from the requirement of 1 or 2 Day SAS for the owner, captain, all watch captains a minimum of 30% of crew; now accepting only the 2 Day SAS or ISAF.  On the Eastern Seaboard, ARC - World Cruising Club is requiring the 2 Day SAS OR ISAF for ALL crew.  Atlantic Cup is quickly moving to match ARC.  TransPac is discussing to standardize to the 2 Day SAS like PacCup.  Locally, the Newport to Ensenada Race (200 yachts) notified all registered vessels that they will be enforcing NOR requirements for safety training.  Putting it altogether, upgraded requirements coupled with stricter enforcement is driving the need for participants to certify, re-certify and take safety training seriously. Justin: In your words, why is it important to do SAS?\ John: Being a USCG Merchant Marine Master with Sailing Endorsement, I am responsible for the safety and well being of every crew and passenger on my vessel.  Tropic Thunder exceeds minimum requirements of safety gear, policies and procedures.  Regardless, the best equipped, best designed and fastest vessel has no value without a trained and experienced crew.  The best safety products, equipment, policies and procedures have no value if the crew and passengers do not know how to properly use them. Young, and Training for a Good Job -- at Sea

04:20
Many new college graduates in the United States have trouble finding a job in the weak economy. But not graduates from the California Maritime Academy. The academy is the only school of its kind on the West Coast. Students attend classes on the university campus in northern California. But they also gain experience by going to sea in a floating classroom, the training ship Golden Bear. Two hundred eighty-eight cadets recently sailed on a two-month international training cruise. The ship travels south to the Panama Canal. Along the way, it visits countries in Central America and the Caribbean.Vasile Tudoran is a mechanical engineering student at the California Maritime Academy. He spends much of his time working deep in the heart of the ship. He says he is not worried about finding a job.Robert Jackson is one of his teachers. He says the majority of the academy's students have between one and two job offers before they complete their studies. He says most of those job offers are between 60 and 120 thousand dollars a year. In addition to working on ships, he says, engineering graduates from the academy also get jobs with power companies and satellite companies. Instructor Bill Schmid says the situation for marine transportation students is not as bright as it was before the economic downturn, but it is recovering. He says most academy graduates are employed in the industry, if they want to be. He also says the coursework is demanding because ship's officers are almost like doctors or airplane pilots. He says people working in the shipping industry have to make the right decision all the time. He says a success rate of seventy percent is unacceptable. The California Maritime Academy has a 94 percent job placement rate. Still, only about 900 students are currently studying there. Cadet Andrew Di Tucci says the academy is different from a traditional college. It is a paramilitary school, and the students must wear uniforms. Andrew Di Tucci is majoring in marine transportation. He says, when he was growing up, he was always told it takes a special person to want to go to sea for a living. In his words, "my favorite thing about it is waking up every morning and seeing nothing but the ocean on all sides of you. I get a thrill out of that."For VOA Special English, I'm Mario Ritter. Career Development at Sea and Ashore - Captain Martin Burley, Lecturer - New Zealand Maritime School

15:30
Captain. Martin Burley Lecturer New Zealand Maritime School Truly inspiring words from Captain Martin Burley as he shares his experience from being a cadet under training and because of world economics had to take up employment as an able seaman on board a tug for a while which he considered was of great value toward his professional development towards becoming a master. His passion for education and training got the better of him while he was in a management position within the office of a leading shipmanagement company and this prompted him to ship out and take up a lecturing position in New Zealand. The New Zealand Maritime School has been developed over the past 70 years to become the premier provider of maritime training in New Zealand. The School overlooks the waterfront in downtown Auckland, an ideal location for students, being at the hub of commercial boating, shipping and other maritime activities, is easily accessible by public transport from any part of Auckland, and is very close to a large range of inexpensive accommodation. The School is staffed by a team of dedicated lecturers who have extensive teaching and maritime industry experience. Each lecturer's specialised knowledge and experience is used to provide you with the highest standard of tuition. The School has always attracted students from throughout New Zealand and overseas. Its reputation as a centre of excellence in maritime training extends well beyond Auckland. The School has existed under various names, which suited its activities and status at the time. In 1980, all foreign-going training became the responsibility of the School, then under Ministry of Transport control and known as the Auckland Nautical School. Since then, the School has developed to provide a total range of maritime training for all grades of nautical qualifications, from small pleasure launches and sailing craft to a master mariner, qualified to command any size of merchant ship anywhere in the world. In 1989 the School came under the responsibility of the Education Department and was transferred from the Ministry of Transport to Manukau Institute of Technology. In 1992 the School took a major step forward in providing a wide range of shipping and freight courses for personnel working ashore as well as at sea. The location and mix of students provide everyone with an interesting and vibrant environment for technical study, and an appreciation of the employment opportunities in the maritime industry. The New Zealand Maritime School is continually expanding its range of courses and resources to provide the highest quality of training. An electronics laboratory provides opportunity for computer training, hands-on and simulator training in radio communications equipment and navigational aids. In 1998 a full mission simulator was installed, providing the opportunity to learn and practise shiphandling techniques for vessels ranging in size from fishing boats to super-tankers.

I managed to obtain all 160+'s at skelegons except shadowers which I obtained a 140... Sorry chief bandits. Enjoy! Music has been taken off due to copyright issues... All credits go to the players I mention in the video. Once again, special thanks to Fluctuation and arr0wraln for being nice and talking to us as well as giving us some mesos.

Navy Master-at-Arms – MA

01:42
When you’re a Navy MA, you are the military police. If there’s a situation at sea or on base, you’re the first to react and respond. Conduct counterterrorism measures, escort and protect shipboard weapons, or join the K-9 asset team and become a military dog handler. There are plenty of ways for you to apply your skills post-service, too. Every agency from the FBI, to NCIS to your local police force is made up of well-trained prior servicemen and women. Hunting for the Bones of an Ancient Sea Monster | Best Job Ever

01:46
As it turns out, the Jurassic Park films are not entirely accurate. Aubrey Jane Roberts, a National Geographic Young Explorers grantee and professional dinosaur hunter (aka paleontologist) loves the films but laments the fact that they have not kept up with modern paleontological findings. And she should know—she is part of an expedition team that has unearthed bones which could potentially push the evolutionary date of plesiosaurs back 20 to 40 million years and change our understanding of the evolution of this unusual group of marine reptiles. #BestJobEver ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe ➡ Get More Best Job Ever on Youtube: http://bit.ly/NGBestJobEver About Best Job Ever: Are you ready for some serious job envy?
