Fast in-memory transaction processing using RDMA and HTM
Authors: Xingda Wei, Jiaxin Shi, Yanzhe Chen, Rong Chen, Haibo Chen Abstract: We present DrTM, a fast in-memory transaction processing system that exploits advanced hardware features (i.e., RDMA and HTM) to improve latency and throughput by over one order of magnitude compared to state-of-the-art distributed transaction systems. The high performance of DrTM are enabled by mostly offloading concurrency control within a local machine into HTM and leveraging the strong consistency between RDMA and HTM to ensure serializability among concurrent transactions across machines. We further build an efficient hash table for DrTM by leveraging HTM and RDMA to simplify the design and notably improve the performance. We describe how DrTM supports common database features like read-only transactions and logging for durability. Evaluation using typical OLTP workloads including TPC-C and SmallBank show that DrTM scales well on a 6-node cluster and achieves over 5.52 and 138 million transactions per second for TPC-C and SmallBank Respectively. This number outperforms a state-of-the-art distributed transaction system (namely Calvin) by at least 17.9X for TPC-C. Balancing Database Storage Latency And Throughput
by Greg Smith The easiest type of benchmark to run on a database is checking its throughput: the total transactions processed during some period of time. But throughput isn't what application users care about. They want low latency. Latency and throughput have a complex dependency on each other, and you'll need a whole new type of test to balance them well. Recent advances in benchmarking tools, like the rate limit in pgbench 9.4, make it possible to analyze latency in a way that highlights this difficult to see area. The graphics and reports of the pgbench-tools package make it possible to see how tuning changes impact both latency and throughput. That that lets you test the "lore" for how best to tune your PostgreSQL server to find out what really works. Using these new tools, this talk will look at the tricky correlation between throughput and latency and how to measure each usefully in common situations. We'll look at three different storage stacks with very different latency profiles: regular disk, disk with battery-backed write cache, and SSD. We'll then look at exactly how checkpoint spikes play out on each and what you can do about them. You'll never trust a simple transactions per second count again!

Speedy transactions in multicore in-memory databases
Silo is a new in-memory database that achieves excellent performance and scalability on modern multicore machines. Silo was designed from the ground up to use system memory and caches efficiently. For instance, it avoids all centralized contention points, including that of centralized transaction ID assignment. Silo's key contribution is a commit protocol based on optimistic concurrency control that provides serializability while avoiding all shared-memory writes for records that were only read. Though this might seem to complicate the enforcement of a serial order, correct logging and recovery is provided by linking periodically-updated epochs with the commit protocol. Silo provides the same guarantees as any serializable database without unnecessary scalability bottlenecks or much additional latency. Silo achieves almost 700,000 transactions per second on a standard TPC-C workload mix on a 32-core machine, as well as near-linear scalability. What’s New With NEO?
Today’s subject is NEO, a coin which saw some of the biggest gains in 2017, and the biggest losses in 2018. It’s currently trading for around eight dollars--down from nearly $135 this time last year. What’s new with NEO? [Intro] Hi, it’s Kiana Danial, CEO of InvestDiva. Before we get started, don’t forget to subscribe to the channel by clicking on the red subscribe button to get these video briefings as soon as we publish them. NEO’s been down on price action as of late, but that doesn’t mean it’s standing still. In fact, they’ve just wrapped up NEODevcon, an annual get-together of NEO-based projects and developers. These new projects include decentralized exchanges, file storage, games, and other new dApps. NEO was originally called Antshares, and it was designed as a foundation for a “smart economy” of decentralized applications. Some people call it the “Chinese Ethereum” but it might be more accurate to compare it with EOS. Instead of a large distributed network, there are seven NEO nodes who ensure consensus on the blockchain. There’s also no mining; instead, users can hold NEO to get GAS, which is used to pay for transaction fees. That means NEO has a lot of advantages. Theoretically, it can handle 10,000 transactions per second, and at current rates, it handles around 1,000. There have already been dozens of ICOs on NEO, and many dApps are already working. Despite this, its token value hasn’t been getting much love from the trading crowd. After reaching the lows of back in November 2017 at around $5 in December 2018, NEO/USD has been struggling to find that great bullish momentum to really trigger a reversal. On the daily chart, the pair has been struggling to break above a really thin Ichimoku cloud. But the future cloud is bearish and the Chiko span, one of the main Ichimoku moving averages, is still inside the previous cloud. NEO was up over 3% on Sunday so and bits of gains the week before so if the pair is able to break above the cloud in its slow and steady pace, the doors may open for it to reach the next resistance level at around $17. However, if the bulls don’t get their act together, we may see another test of the $5.54 support level before the next bullish round. Now I’d like to hear from you. The Case for Small Data Management
Abstract: Exabytes of data; several hundred thousand TPC-C transactions per second on a single computing core; scale-up to hundreds of cores and a dozen Terabytes of main memory; scale-out to thousands of nodes with close to Petabyte-sized main memories; and massively parallel query processing are a reality in data management. But, hold on a second: for how many users exactly? How many users do you know that really have to handle these kinds of massive datasets and extreme query workloads? On the other hand: how many users do you know that are fighting to handle relatively small datasets, say in the range of a few thousand to a few million rows per table? How come some of the most popular open source DBMS have hopelessly outdated optimizers producing inefficient query plans? How come people don’t care and love it anyway? Could it be that most of the world’s data management problems are actually quite small? How can we increase the impact of database research in areas when datasets are small? What are the typical problems? What does this mean for database research? We discuss research challenges, directions, and a concrete technical solution coined PDbF: Portable Database Files. This is an extended version of an abstract and Gong Show talk presented at CIDR 2015. Ethereum could be in trouble, as an important upgrade has been delayed for a last-minute security fix. That’s bad news, but it could present a big opportunity for other platforms. Today we’re going to talk about Aeternity, a smart contract platform that wants to take Ethereum’s place. But, the question is, Will We Have To Wait An “AE”Ternity for it to show signs of recovery? [INTRO] Hi, it’s Kiana Danial, CEO of InvestDiva and today I’m gonna explore whether or not Aeternity’s got what it takes to replace Ethereum. Ranked 40 based on market capitalization, and up 23% on Wednesday, Aeternity uses mining, like Ethereum. But unlike Ethereum, Aeternity’s mining algorithm is extremely efficient, allowing fast thousands of transactions per second. They’ve also taken advantage of some of Ethereum’s hard lessons. Aeternity is designed for decentralized oracles, allowing programs to access data from the real world in a decentralized way. That could be a big improvement over other blockchains. Many projects are struggling to find ways to integrate real-world data. Despite all this, Aeternity’s token, AE, spent the last whole month hanging around its all-time low level. However, As Ethereum struggled to make any gains in the past couple of days, the trading crowd appear to have flocked to this wanna-be Ethereum token, which helped its price jump 23% in 24 hours. Looking at the AE/BTC daily chart, the pair has even tested the upper band of the daily Ichimoku cloud, an indicator we use to get a better understanding of the price action. With this, if AE is able to break above the cloud, it might generate enough bullish momentum to reach the next resistance level at 23% Fibonacci level which traces the downtrend that started back in June 2018. NuoDB Scale-Out Performance Demo
This short demo video demonstrates how the NuoDB distributed SQL database scales elastically on demand, while maintaining full ACID compliance. Download the Free NuoDB software to experience consistency: http://dev.nuodb.com/download-nuodb/request/download Transcription: NuoDB is a distributed database management system that allows you to dynamically add and remove active nodes without ever sacrificing transactional consistency. In this short video, we will demonstrate how the NuoDB database scales elastically on demand, while maintaining full ACID compliance. We are demoing an online application called “Storefront,” which uses the NuoDB database and connects to it through standard JDBC connections. Storefront simulates shoppers browsing products, adding purchases to a shopping cart, checking out, and writing product reviews. Now let’s switch to the Storefront demo screen to see how NuoDB is designed to scale dynamically - out and in - across host machines. In NuoDB, transactions are performed by in-memory processes called Transaction Engines or “TEs”. To increase database throughput add one or more TEs. If less throughput is required, you simply remove a TE. Although NuoDB operates at in-memory speeds it is a general purpose database. Similar to the transaction layer, the storage layer is designed to scale out for high-availability and redundancy. As you can see on the screen, we are running Storefront in the AWS US West datacenter at 100 concurrent users with 200 transactions per second or “TPS” -- shown also in the large graph below --- and a latency of around 20 milliseconds per transaction. As more shoppers – in our case 500 - get online, throughput will be decreasing below 170 TPS and latency will become unacceptably high. Since we want our customers to have an excellent online experience in our store, we’ll simply bring new TE’s online to handle the increased workload efficiently. To do this we will fire off 3 new TEs on separate host machines. As the TEs come online, transactions are now being distributed equally across all 4 TEs. Notice latency is rapidly decreasing while throughput is increasing in a linear fashion to around 900 TPS. (Wait) This on demand scale-out performance behavior is one of the key advantages of the NuoDB distributed architecture. Now, let’s reduce the number of concurrent users down to 200 while we continue to distribute the workload across all 4 TEs. As you can see the transactions per second decrease in lockstep with the number of concurrent users, which suggests that the database is overprovisioned. Because of NuoDB’s distributed architecture, we can stop TE processes without bringing down the database. As we cut the number of TEs to 2, you will see that the TPS and latency stay the same while using half the TE resources. This proves that the database was overprovisioned. This elastic scalability ensures that you use only the resources you need, when you need them. What we’ve seen in this demo - in real time - is that it’s easy to add or take away Transaction Engines to ensure the best database performance at the lowest latency. FTM tokens will be used in various ways: - To enable low-cost transactions to proceed and to pay for transaction fees. - Enable access to the platform across various FANTOM applications and smart contract variations. - Incentivize network participants. The platform will initially have a 5% annual inflation rate that decreases as more users join the network. 20% of the total inflation will be used to reward nodes and the rest will be used to incentivize platform users (e.g. near zero fees), and to reward users for contributing to the ecosystem. We believe that one of the main metrics to determine the success of a blockchain is usage. The NEO Smart Economy is worth a second look. NEO is a China-based blockchain organization which has an interesting ecosystem. It is a cross-platform blockchain which will communicate with the Ethereum blockchain (and others) in the near future. Currently, NEO is focused on developing its development team, and user interface for its dapps. (decentralized apps) but a new trending focus on games has been underway this year. NEO has a high TPS (transaction per second) throughput which is the top two in my opinion. (EOS being #1 arguably) NEO is also proof of stake which uses its GAS NEP Token which is pretty awesome for investors. The dapps are beautiful too! In Mastercard we deal with data movement and transformation issues all the time. Having a data workflow which is multi-tenant, fast , scalable, reliable and easy to use is very important. Apart from moving data , it is also important to process it in real time and take decisions. Our goal is to provide a solution to our internal teams to ingest flat files or auth streams, do transformations and enrichment , power dashboards, detect anomalies ,feed machine learning models and then take complex decisions. Ability to process huge files with varied frequencies as well as streams of thousands transactions per second is must. Teams could use a common service and focus on business problem rather than fixing data flow and management issues. A data workflow coupled with a stream processing engine could solve many of our problems. We are evaluating Apache NIFI along with SAM and adding customization to solve specific use cases. But neither the Blockchain network of Bitcoin nor the Blockchain 2.0 network established by Ethereum can solve the problem existing in low industry performance and TPS of the Blockchain (transaction per second, i.e., the speed of processing requests). Presently, the transaction time of Bitcoin is about 1 hour while the transaction time of Ethereum is between 5 and 10 minutes. However, the transaction speed in the ecologies of LightChain is close to zero, which is the highest speed currently reached for transaction speed. The prominent innovation of LightChain is characterized by the world's first epoch-making architecture of "double-layer Blockchain". The double-layer chain of LightChain constitutes only one parent chain and one or more sub-chains independent from each other and the number of sub-chains can be arbitrarily expanded. Similar to the traditional public chain, the parent chain ensures that records cannot be tampered with or destroyed and are transparent to the public. Based on the Proof of Machine (PoM) validation method, together with the In-Memory database cache, the sub-chain can effectively improve cache throughput and improve performance to 100,000 QPS (Query Per Second). Sub-chain transaction records are periodically synchronized with the parent chain. The synchronization process operates in batches through batch updates to ensure the integrity of the parent chain transaction records. Based on the above technological innovations, the LightChain truly achieves the transaction processing speed effectively under the premise of ensuring that the record can not be tampered with and destroyed. The transaction processing speed based on the LightChain system has reached the theoretical maximum currently. Ten years ago, the advent of Bitcoin enabled people to see the value of virtual currency in the area of Blockchain. Later, the improvements of Ethereum made Blockchain technology move toward the development of the bottom-level applications. Brian Bulkowski | Strata Data Conference 2013
Brian Bulkowski is the founder and CEO of Aerospike. Bulkowski joins Wikibon's Dave Vellante and SiliconAngle's John Furrier inside theCUBE at Strata Conference 2013. One of the more interesting interviews from last month's Strata event, for me personally, was when Brian Bulkowski, CTO of Aerospike joined theCube hosts John Furrier and Dave Vellante to talk Flash. In-Memory databases are here to stay, even filling into its own market. In the interview, Bulkowski discusses how software-led is the next maturation of a lot of cloud technologies. The flash layer of in-memory is booming right now. The biggest change in flash and SSD that Aerospike is seeing with its customers in the last 6 months is price and density. On the density side, its largest customers are doubling, sometimes quadrupling the size of each and every node. 500gb of flash per node, are now becoming 1-4 terabyte architectures. Going from 40 node clusters to 4 node clusters. Big advertising use cases pushing Big Real Time Data (BRTD). And price? $1-$1.50 per gigabyte compared to $30 per gigabyte of RAM. That's a 30x price performance difference. Additionally exciting for flash is that it doesn't have to be slower anymore. Before, at 10,000 transactions per second per sever flash was the bottleneck. Now, at 100,000-200,000 transactions per second per server network is back to being the bottleneck. In the last few months, flash has blown past that. The outcome? If you have in-memory and SSD, you might as well use flash. The memory is going to be the bottleneck in either case. Why not save yourself money to the tune of a factor of 30? SQL shows promise for real-time . Aerospike is a firm believer in real-time no SQL, too. Bulkowski said that they have a lot of use cases for real-time. Threat detection, insights, patterns, and signatures are all front-side. In the past, you had to have extraordinarily fast key value stores. Nowadays, with NoSQL you can map reduce over more data. This is huge for transactional — network threat detection is faster and equally big for gaming — matchmaking for opponents in game. 5oo milliseconds doesn't leave a lot of time to run analytics and match algorithms in the 'right now'. Real-time is replacing batch jobs in these instances. Software is helping push the real-time ball down the field, and software-led infrastructures and architectures are all about flexibility. Bulkowski sees it as the next step in maturation of a lot of the cloud technologies. What does that mean? "Database company like us flexibly and elastically at capacity," — nimble is the name of the game for Aerospike. Mixing and matching of softwares/technologies is only a good thing for the customer too. Database as a service opportunity anyone? For the customers it means a more real-time response to different business conditions. Software-led means new and improved productivity with certain impact on the organization. Aerospike believes that flash will continue to play a vital role in those improvements. Look out for user-defined functions (customizing your database) from Aerospike in 2013. With its gaming and online matchmaking clients, Aerospike aims to bring user-defined functions into the world of flash and SSD. Oh yea, and metadata is no longer under lock and key.

Scaling write-heavy OLTP systems with strong data guarantees - Gokulvanan V Velan
Order capture and Order management systems at Flipkart have had to scale by 10X volumes to cater to growth in eCommerce and user base.In addition, these systems need to scale for bursty traffic by 1000x for flash sale business model. These systems are write heavy and need strong data guarantees (Consistency, Data-availability, Durability etc). With scale, the data stores for these systems have outgrown capabilities provided out of the box by databases like MySQL and point solutions for each system in the ecosystem have resulted in fragmentation. This talk focuses on our journey in solving for our datastore needs holistically by customising Hbase at the source code level to support Strong Consistency in Write Heavy workloads, Transactional Change Propagation to enable Lamdba Architecture patterns, Basic index support and provide predictable Scalability using Tenant isolation. This talk will dive into details by introducing concept of regionserver groups (rsgroups) within an hbase cluster, tweaks to balancing algorithms in region rebalancing within rsgroup, ensuring no data loss in change propagation and mvcc style approach to support basic indexes over distributed transaction. We currently are live in production with a single multi-tenant hbase cluster that servers half a million QPS in Order capture and Order management flows.
