15 Recent Science Discoveries You Wont Believe

08:39
15 amazing recent discoveries in the world of science and here they are from bionic contact lenses to reanimating dinosaur dna! Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 7. New Human Species Biologists all over the world were intrigued upon hearing the 2015 discovery of a new species of human, Homo Naledi, allowing for an ever clearer picture of our ancient ancestry. The findings were unveiled deep in an underground cave in South Africa and is considered one of the greatest collection of human remains ever unearthed. So far, it is known that this species of human grew to an average height of 5 feet and had a brain no larger than an orange. The way the bones in the South African cave were arranged suggests that these human ancestors ritualistically buried their dead, giving scientists a glimpse into our cultural past. 6. Bionic Lens While still in the testing stage, the founder of Ocumetics Technology Corp may have stumbled upon a revolutionary technology that could augment the way humans perceive the world. A new bionic contact lens will give wearers an ability to see the world with stronger than 20/20 vision. Some subjects, who have already tried the lens themselves, claim that they not only see better than ever before but have identified a unique spectrum of colors unfamiliar to the unaided eye. Is this perhaps the first step in the direction of a new era of superhumans? 5. Harder Than Diamond Scientists may have recently discovered a substance harder than diamond, Q-carbon. What gives diamonds their excellent hardness are the chemical bonds that hold them together. The carbon in diamonds is held together by incredibly tight chemical bonds at the microscopic level, giving diamonds their prominent hardness. By the manipulation of carbon atoms, scientists were able to augment their chemical bonds, producing a material that is potentially 60 times harder than diamond. While this substance is still being experimented on, it is a potential prospect for the future of cheap, efficient technologies. 4. First Mammals Researchers from the University of Edinburgh have discovered an ancient species of mammals that survived the notorious extinction of the dinosaurs over 65 million years ago. The reason this find is so significant is that it gives us a glimpse at how mammals began to rule the world previously dominated by their cold-blooded counterparts. The mammal is thought to have been a plant-eater closely resembling a modern beaver. Once the dinosaurs were eliminated these beaver-like creatures began to flourish, given that they were no longer victims of dinosaur predators. Because these little guys were able to withstand the destruction that wrecked havoc on the dinosaurs, an array of mammals, including our ancestors, were finally able to leave their mark on the world. 3. Whale Gene Mapping Gene mapping is starting to look less like a theoretical nicety and more like an applied science with this new aquatic discovery. Scientists have finally discovered why Bowhead Whales are able to live to 200 years old by remapping their entire genome. By comparing the genome of Bowhead Whales with the genome of other mammals with a less impressive lifespan, scientists were able to point out marked differences. Bowhead longevity is due to its genes’ effectiveness in repairing gene deterioration, which is the cause of cancer and other ailments known to cut human life short. By further studying this animal’s genes, scientists may finally be able to restore our own faulty genetic system, substantially lengthening our lives. 2. Second Earth NASA has recently confirmed their discovery of a possible second Earth. Kepler-452b orbits its sun in what scientists call the “Goldilocks Zone,” which is the habitable region in space, not too far or close to the sun, necessary for the possibility of life to flourish. The new planet appears to have a rocky surface as well as liquid water, which is another key ingredient for life to subsist. Although not much is known about if there is life beyond Earth, it makes sense to take notice of planets similar to our own. 1. Animal Re-animation Scientists have always been intrigued by the prospect of re-animating creatures that have been extinct for many years. While bringing a dinosaur back to life would be kind of cool, bringing a Wooly Mammoth back to life would be just as cool, and that is just what scientists are trying to do. Because Wooly Mammoths and Saber-Toothed Tigers have only been extinct for tens of thousands of years, unlike the millions of years dinosaurs have been extinct, intact DNA samples are much easier to find. Scientists believe it is possible to recreate these extinct beasts by cloning them with DNA and tissue samples, which have been found, over the years, preserved in ice.

Quantum Physics Explained

25:34
Quantum mechanics is the branch of physics relating to the very small. It results in what may appear to be some very strange conclusions about the physical world. At the scale of atoms and electrons, many of the equations of classical mechanics, which describe how things move at everyday sizes and speeds, cease to be useful. In classical mechanics, objects exist in a specific place at a specific time. However, in quantum mechanics, objects instead exist in a haze of probability; they have a certain chance of being at point A, another chance of being at point B and so on. Three revolutionary principles Quantum mechanics (QM) developed over many decades, beginning as a set of controversial mathematical explanations of experiments that the math of classical mechanics could not explain. It began at the turn of the 20th century, around the same time that Albert Einstein published his theory of relativity, a separate mathematical revolution in physics that describes the motion of things at high speeds. Unlike relativity, however, the origins of QM cannot be attributed to any one scientist. Rather, multiple scientists contributed to a foundation of three revolutionary principles that gradually gained acceptance and experimental verification between 1900 and 1930. They are: Quantized properties: Certain properties, such as position, speed and color, can sometimes only occur in specific, set amounts, much like a dial that "clicks" from number to number. This challenged a fundamental assumption of classical mechanics, which said that such properties should exist on a smooth, continuous spectrum. To describe the idea that some properties "clicked" like a dial with specific settings, scientists coined the word "quantized." Particles of light: Light can sometimes behave as a particle. This was initially met with harsh criticism, as it ran contrary to 200 years of experiments showing that light behaved as a wave; much like ripples on the surface of a calm lake. Light behaves similarly in that it bounces off walls and bends around corners, and that the crests and troughs of the wave can add up or cancel out. Added wave crests result in brighter light, while waves that cancel out produce darkness. A light source can be thought of as a ball on a stick being rhythmically dipped in the center of a lake. The color emitted corresponds to the distance between the crests, which is determined by the speed of the ball's rhythm. Waves of matter: Matter can also behave as a wave. This ran counter to the roughly 30 years of experiments showing that matter (such as electrons) exists as particles. Physics Today | Wikipedia audio article

01:17
This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: Physics Today Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago. Learning by listening is a great way to: - increases imagination and understanding - improves your listening skills - improves your own spoken accent - learn while on the move - reduce eye strain Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone. You can find other Wikipedia audio articles too at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuKfABj2eGyjH3ntPxp4YeQ You can upload your own Wikipedia articles through: https://github.com/nodef/wikipedia-tts "The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing." - Socrates SUMMARY ======= Physics Today is the membership magazine of the American Institute of Physics that was established in 1948. It is provided to the members of ten physics societies, including the American Physical Society. Although its content is scientifically rigorous and up to date, it is not a true scholarly journal in the sense of being a primary vehicle for communicating new results. Rather, it is more of a hybrid magazine that informs readers about important developments in the form of overview articles written by experts, shorter review articles written internally by staff, and also discusses the latest issues and events of importance to the science community such as science politics. The physics community's main vessel for new results are the Physical Review suite of scientific journals published by the American Physical Society and Applied Physics Letters published by the American Institute of Physics. The magazine provides a historical resource of events associated with physics, including debunking the physics behind the Star Wars program of the 1980s, and the state of physics in China and the Soviet Union during the 1950s and 1970s. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2017 impact factor of 4.370.

We need to talk about Physics | Helen Czerski | TEDxManchester

16:26
When we hear about physics, we often hear about the weirdness of the tiny quantum world or the bewildering vastness of the cosmos. But there's a lot in the middle, and it's time someone starting talking about it. In this talk, Helen Czerski will take us through some of the little everyday oddities that shed light on some of the most important science and technology of our time. This is the physics that is woven into our lives - it's what makes the cream rise to the top of the milk, it dictates how tall a tree can be and it makes magnets stick to the fridge. But the same principles also explain how the ocean conveyer belt moves, how modern insulin tests work, and they open the door to the technologies that will power our future. Once the patterns are visible, a new perspective on the world beckons. Dr Helen Czerski is an oceanographer, physicist and broadcaster with an healthy appetite for “everyday” science. She has a degree in natural sciences, a PhD in experimental explosives physics, and has spent several years studying the optics and acoustics of ocean bubbles. She works in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University College London, and is a science presenter for the BBC. She is also a keen supporter of ScienceGrrl, which celebrates women doing great science. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

The physics of turbochargers (for dummies) | Auto Expert John Cadogan

12:19
You want the physics without the mathematics and the consequential intracranial bleeding? OK - here we go: Today’s chat is inspired by JB007: "30 years ago I was told the heat loss through the turbo causes it to turn and I have been trying to get my head around this ever since. ie, heat loss creates a pressure differential that creates flow. It’s still bending my brain. How does this work?" Combustion is the process that drives everything. Fuel has a high amount of stored energy. Combustion byproducts (CO2 and water) have a low amount of stored energy. The difference in the two stored energy states is liberated and used for motivation (and to drive the alternator, etc.) It’s the heat that energises the gas in the combustion chamber. And it’s the energetic state of the gas that does the mechanical work on the piston. Unfortunately, we just throw some of that apparently serviceable energy away, out the exhaust pipe. It’s this wasted energy - at least some of it - that is used to drive the turbocharger. There’s a lot of energy still in the exhaust gas as it exits the cylinder and enters the exhaust manifold. The energy inside the gas in those headers exists in the form of heat, pressure and motion. Because it’s pressurised relative to atmosphere it’s on the hunt for a way out, and the only exit sign is hanging over the entry to the exhaust turbine part of the turbocharger. It’s like a pressure release valve. Lots of processes take place here. The pressure inside the exhaust manifold is caused by heat - because there’s a direct, linear relationship between absolute temperature and pressure. So there’s high pressure on the engine side and relatively low pressure on the exit side. Therefore, there’s flow. (Because gasses flow from areas of high to low pressure.) Gasses have mass. Exhaust is mainly nitrogen gas, CO2 and steam. They’ve all got mass. If you’ve got mass and flow, you’ve got kinetic energy. So the heat and pressure turns into kinetic energy by virtue of its motion through the turbine. The gas also has viscosity - which is a fancy way of saying it just doesn’t like being pushed around. Or at least it resists being pushed around. So it hits the turbine blades on its way out out the door and the resistance translates to force acting on the blades, and that spins the turbine, which is connected to the compressor on the other end of the shaft. The compressor pressurises the air on the way into the engine, and that’s basically the mechanism for transferring energy that would have been wasted in the exhaust to additional energy in the inlet air stream (in the form of pressure). A couple of points on this: Several people took issue with the fact that I said turbochargers are not driven by heat. And I stand by that statement - a turbocharger is driven by mechanical flow - kinetic energy and viscosity. The gas that flows is energised by heat, certainly, but you cannot drive a turbine by heat - you need flow. If you want to claim it’s heat also driving your alternator, then yeah - OK. We’re totally on the same page here. There’s a thing called the first law of thermodynamics, which basically covers the conservation of energy. It essentially says the sum of work and energy in a closed system is constant in the time domain. So if you put a box around the turbine in a turbocharger, you’ve got energy going in (in the form of highly pressurised, hot gas). You can see it’s hot because it’s heating up the headers to bright yellow while it waits for its turn to go through. You’ve got energy coming out, in the form of mechanical work done spinning the turbocharger (the rotational kinetic energy acquired by the turbine and the compressor). And also in the form of the energy left in the exhaust gas after it passes through the turbine. Energy in has to equal energy out, or you violate the first law, and that’s not allowed. So the energy coming out of the turbine equals the energy on the way in minus the work done on the turbine and compressor. So the total energy of the exhaust gasses after the turbo must be less than before the turbo. It’s definitively a lower temperature on the output side of the turbine (you can see that) and the pressure is also lower (otherwise there wouldn’t be flow in that direction). And these are two of the key indicators of the energy state of any gas, all other things being equal. So instead of thinking about this like: ‘How does the temperature difference (or heat loss) drive the turbocharger?’ just think about it like this (at the risk of dumbing it down to the point where even a politician would get it): You’ve got high energy gas going into the turbo. It comes out at a lower energy, and the difference between the energy states, before and after, is the energy that’s been returned to the engine by the turbocharger. The temperature and the pressure differences are just individual pieces in the thermodynamics jigsaw puzzle.

The applied physics of five cylinder engines Auto Expert John Cadogan

18:04
Inline fives - you’ll find them in service today on the Ford Ranger and Mazda BT-50. Various manufacturers including Merc, Audi, Ford, Volvo and Jeep have had their dalliances with inline fives in both petrol and diesel. But the reason inline five-cylinder petrol engines are late bloomers on the automotive landscape is simple: Carburettors suck. If you try to fuel an inline five with a single carb, you run into unavoidably inconsistent fuelling problems between the cylinders. It’s just not symmetrical. If you fit multiple carbs - two or three - one of the carbs always fuels more (or fewer) cylinders, making it inherently difficult, bordering on impossible, or at the very least practically unworkable, to balance up the fuelling. Hypothetically, you could fit five carburettors - one for each port - but that’s not really a viable suggestion if you want to save cost over a comparable six-cylinder engine… Multi-point fuel injection solved that problem and made five-cylinder petrol engines viable because one central fuel pump feeds five injectors, one in each inlet port, making even fuelling easy to achieve. This also explains why five-cylinder diesels were more historically popular - decades earlier - because diesels are all compression-ignition fuel injected engines, obviously. The other thing about five cylinders is that in a four stroke engine, one complete cycle is two revs - 720 degrees or crank rotation. 720 degrees, divided by five cylinders is 144 degrees between firing strokes. And 360 degrees divided by 144 doesn’t give you a whole number - so a five-cylinder engine can’t share crank phases, unlike a six-cylinder or an eight-cylinder engine. Inline fives need five separate crank pins at 72 degrees to deliver even firing pulses. And the main advantage of an inline five over a four is that the firing pulses are a lot closer together. There’s a few inherent balance deficits in inline fives: They have planar imbalance on the reciprocating mass, and on the rotating mass, and on compression. So you need heavy counterweights to mask all that, and this results in an engine that doesn’t rev up all that fast. They’re sort of OK for secondary balance (depending on which firing order they use) almost comparable to an inline six in the best case. And that means you can design them a bit undersquare (with a relatively long stroke relative to the bore) without compromising high-rpm smoothness. With an under-square five, the small bore/long stroke design means you can reduce the overall engine length a bit and put them in an engine bay about the same size as you’d need for a four-cylinder … provided the beancounters will wear the cost of the additional the parts, the extra machining, and screwing them all together. Another way of looking at this, perhaps, is you can have a three-point-something inline five for a lot less cost and less physical space than an inline six, or slightly more space (but still less cost) than a V6. It’ll be slightly rougher, but, hey, we’re saving the big bucks here… Volkswagen uses a 3.0-litre inline six in the Amarok. Ford uses a 3.2 inline five in the Ranger. You can say that the Amarok is more powerful - it certainly is - but it’s spinning 50 per cent faster and only making 12 per cent more power … so the torque production is falling in a hole. (Power equals torque times revs, right? Do you really want to rev a diesel like the Amarok to 4500 revs for maximum acceleration at any particular road speed? Or would you rather be at 3000 revs, like in the Ford/Mazda engine? I’ll take 3000.) If you want to be the full nerd on inline fives, here’s the pub conversation-stopper: There are 24 different potential firing order permutations that support a 144-degree phasing of the crank. (For a four-stroke.) But they only commonly use two of those permutations in production. 1-2-4-5-3 is the combination that minimises the crank-speed ‘rocking couple vibration’ - and it’s the most common firing order for inline fives on road cars. But 1-5-2-3-4 minimises secondary imbalance and that’s the one they use commonly in V10s. Which are essentially two inline fives, Siamesed and sharing a crank. The Audi R8, the BMW E60 and E61 M5s and the E63 and E64 M6s use that second firing order. I think the Dodge Viper was like that as well. The 1-5-2-3-4 order in the V10s has a high primary rocking couple and is not such a good choice for inline fives. But it suits the V10s - and it allows higher revs. Statistically, nobody knows that about the firing orders.

More from TodayIFoundOut: Do Scientists Ever Name Creatures After People They Dislike Out of Spite? https://youtu.be/ygTJUYZlDdY In this video: While it’s likely others had tried it before, the first surviving documented attempt of someone trying to turn something to gold in a (relatively) scientific fashion occurred around 300 AD. The proto-scientist in question was a Greco-Egyptian named Zosimos. During his lifetime, it’s thought that he wrote nearly thirty books about alchemy, but most of them have been lost to history. 10 Amazing Science Tricks Using Liquid!

06:30
Add me on Facebook (click LIKE on Facebook to add me) - http://www.facebook.com/brusspup Download the music in this video: Song #1: Abyss - iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/abyss-single/id1033702454 Amazon download: http://www.amazon.com/Abyss-brusspup/dp/B014I4BFTI/ Song #2: Over Rain iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/over-rain-single/id1033695238 Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Over-Rain-brusspup/dp/B014JXPNSW/ Detailed information for the tricks in the video: 1. Slow motion ball: You need a thick liquid, preferably honey, a heavy ball, and a sphere shaped container. Place the heavy ball in the lower half of the sphere. Fill the lower half of the container with honey a little more than half. If you use too little or too much, it will affect the motion of the ball. 2. Water fire starter. Credit goes to The King of Random for this idea. Be sure to check out his channel. He has a huge selection of amazing how to experiments. https://www.youtube.com/user/01032010814 You need a plastic or glass container with a curved area. The Pom bottles work great. Fill the bottle with water. Fold 2 sheets of paper in half, twice. Print or scribble a black mark on one of the sheets. On a sunny day hold the bottle near the paper, focusing the light on the black area of the paper. Once it starts to smoke and a hole begins to form, wrap the other sheet of paper around the smoking piece. Wave the papers through the air to feed oxygen to the spark. Continue this until the paper catches on fire. 3. No-leak magic bag: Al you need is a zip baggy, pencils and water. Fill the bag almost to the top. Zip it shut, and start sticking pencils through the bag. Sometimes a few drops will leak out, but overall, this is a simple yet impressive trick 4. Liquid Stacking: You'll need a tall glass or bottle. Dish Soap, vegetable oil, dark corn syrup, rubbing alcohol, water and food coloring. First add the dark corn syrup, then dish soap, then add food coloring to the water and pour it in with the bottle tilted, then add the vegetable oil (bottle tilted), and finally add food coloring to the alcohol and pour it in with the bottle tilted. 5. Invisible Bottle: You need glycerin, a glass and a bottle that will fit in the glass. Fill both glass and bottle with glycerin and place the bottle in the glass. It looks like the bottle disappears. 6. Dancing Liquid: You need a powered speaker, a tone generator (can be found online), corn starch, water and plastic to protect the speaker. Pour 1/2 cup of corn starch in a bowl and 1/4 cup of water. Mix. Pour the liquid into the speaker and generate a 60hz tone. 7. Magic Water Barrier: You need 2 of the same glasses. Hot water, cold water, food coloring and a thin piece of plastic or cardboard. Pour the hot water in 1 glass, the cold in the other glass, add food coloring, then place the plastic on top of the hot water glass. Turn the glass upside down, place it on top of the cold water glass, then carefully remove the plastic. Hot water is less dense than cold water, so it "floats" on top of the cold water. 8. Leidenfrost effect: You need a pan, water and a stove. Turn the heat on high for about 4 minutes then add the water. This experiment can stain your pans. 9. Reverse Illusion: Add all sorts of images or words behind a glass, then watch as it reverses when you add water in the glass. 10. Reversing Liquid: You need 1 big glass, 1 smaller glass, 3 mixing glasses, corn syrup, pipettes, food coloring, and clips. First pour the corn syrup into the 2 bigger glasses. Place the smaller glass inside of the bigger glass. Attach the clips to prevent the smaller glass from moving side to side in the bigger glass. Pour a small amount of corn syrup into the 3 mixing glasses. Add food coloring and stir. Fill each pipette with a different color, then add the colored corn syrup to your big glass. Turn the smaller glass carefully and watch the colors mix. Turn it back and watch them unmix. Thanks for watching! Have fun!

Proof Physics Changes the Chemistry of Water

05:22
Randy Jones is a health conscious HVAC contractor from upstate New York. For years he's has been on a journey to create water with a pH that simulates the same pH of blood. Like so many people, Randy had invested in many different types of water filters. He started out with reverse osmosis, turned to regular bottled water, then alkaline water, distilled water, and finally he found Structured Water. His journey for water with a pH that simulates the pH of blood led him to the Jivara Maximus Whole House Water Structuring device. Immediately after installing his Jivara Maximus Whole House Structuring Device, Randy tested the water coming out of the faucet with his calibrated Digital pH meter. Randy’s testing proved a physics based structured water device changes the chemistry of water. We were able to capture Randy’s story so you can hear his words for yourself by listening to the following YouTube recording. According to a study from Fenestra Research over 94% of people are dehydrated which suggests people aren’t drinking enough high quality hydrating water. Structured water provides an answer to this problem by creating water that tastes and feels great. People enjoy drinking, showering and watering their plants with structured water and as a result they are better hydrated. Structured water is better than traditional water filters like reverse osmosis, carbon block filters, charcoal filters or coconut filters because it uses physics (instead of chemistry) to energize water and neutralize all of the toxins like chlorine, chloramines, fluoride, pharmaceuticals, and more. Jivara Water Structuring Devices are the ultimate in energizing, neutralizing, and water structuring technology on Planet Earth. This European Water Structuring technology is made of the finest materials including brass, crystals, rose quartz, shungite, and EM Ceramics, among other precious stones. In addition to structuring water in multiple ways including vortexing, Sacred Geometry, and entrainment, every measurement in these beautifully constructed devices is designed to evoke the energy of the Cosmos. Experience the magnificence of the Jivara Maximus, 3 in 1 and Undersink today. https://thewellnessenterprise.com/shop-structured-water/ To shop for structured water devices today visit the only Structured Water Superstore at The Wellness Enterprise where you will find Natural Action Water, Jivara, UMH, the Jivara Mountain Spring, Omica Minerals, Blue Bottle Love and more. https://thewellnessenterprise.com/shop-structured-water/ Additional information and water education resources are available.
