I made this DIY shaker style country cupboard using only hand tools as a first project with my new work bench. I have been watching a lot of videos by Wood By Wright and The Hand Toolery (Links to their channels below) lately and was inspired to keep the woodworking machines turned off for this project. It has been a while since i did some traditional woodworking. The cupboard is made from the cheapest common white pine you can buy at the home center. I made the project using a lot of different types of joinery including mortise and tenons, sliding, through and half blind dovetails, ship lap and half lap joinery. It took me about 30 hours to complete and was a great project to pull out the hand saws, hand planes, chisels and more traditional woodworking tools. I had a great time making this project and I hope you enjoy the video. If you do, give me a thumbs up, leave a comment and subscribe to see more! Shaker furniture is known for it's clean lines and simplicity, and some even think it was the predecessor to modern furniture. And while you may know Shaker chairs, there's way more to Shaker style furniture, and Meghan Carter of http://www.AsktheDecorator.com visited Shaker Village in Kentucky to learn all about the Shaker's furniture.

Shaker furniture makers were known to be extremely technically proficient. The made very minute and very tight dovetails, lightweight yet strong chairs, and as a community of shared space and ownership, the chairs followed a form that varied little from maker to maker. However every once in a while you come across a piece that makes you question that. This is one of them.

Please like and subscribe if you enjoyed this video! In this video, I show how I designed and built a shaker style side table out of solid walnut. This table is built to last, and I look forward to passing it down through future generations of my family. The table has classic tapered legs, uses mortise and tenon joinery, and includes no fasteners other than three screws to attach the table top (to allow for seasonal wood movement) and a store-bought drawer pull. The drawer body is made of maple, with a floating 1/4" plywood bottom. The drawer slides are also made of maple, for durability. I finished the table by sanding down to 400 grit and applying four coats of Arm-R-Seal. This build took a total of about 10 hours spread over several days. If you are interested in a copy of the Sketchup file I created when designing this table, I have uploaded it here: https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model/bd2be7d7-b386-4bb0-b441-c2e51d76abcc/Classic-Shaker-Side-Table Thanks for watching. This is about the making of a Shaker style ash desk (or table) which I made in late 2015. I chose Ash wood because I have used it before and it has some underrated beautiful grain, it's reasonable to work and not too expensive compared to other hardwoods. I used a combination of hand tools and power/machine tools. The rails and legs are constructed using mortise and tenons. Traditional buttons are used to attach the top to the rails to allow for wood movement. It was a fun and relatively quick project to make. I built this writing desk in a weekend, and I bet you could too. It’s quick, simple, and elegant. I designed this to be a quick and easy project, while not being ugly. The top is a simple plywood piece, but dressed up with some faux breadboard ends which give the illusion of a much more difficult solid hardwood top. The understructure is made of red oak, but with very simple joinery. The majority of it is simple, strong, pocket-hole joints. However most of this is hidden away so no one can see. (There are also a few dowel joints, which was a compromise when I ran out of pocket-hole screws!) I built this in about 8-10 hrs of work, followed by a few more hours of applying finish, spread out over three days. ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- WHAT I USED (Affiliate Links): http://amzn.to/1V56afq — Kreg Pocket Hole Jig http://amzn.to/1pFGjPk — Sensgard ZEM hearing protection http://amzn.to/1R6Sb5U — Dowelmax Dowelling jig system ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- You can find more details about this project on my website -- including all the dimensions from my plans -- here: http://wordsnwood.com/2015/writingdesk/ HOW YOU CAN HELP: Become a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/wordsnwood Buy a Plan: http://wordsnwood.com/plans/ MORE MORE MORE: http://www.wordsnwood.com https://www.instagram.com/words.n.wood https://www.facebook.com/wordsnwood Music: http://audionautix.com/

http://kitchencabinetvalue.com Shaker kitchen cabinets presented by Kitchen Cabinet Value 586-580-9436. Shaker kitchen cabinets experience highs and lows of popularity over the years. Like all Shaker design and craftsmanship, kitchen cabinets are simple, functional and well made. The two most prominent characteristics of Shaker style cabinets are the use of dovetail corners and the door style, also commonly called "frame and panel." The front of the shaker kitchen cabinet door consists of a frame overlaid on a simple panel of wood. Although Shaker cabinets were originally made of cherry, today this style is available in most woods and homeowners can choose either an indigenous wood or in a wood that blends well with the rest of the décor of the house. Particularly popular today are white Shaker cabinets. If drawer pulls and handles are added, they will typically be knobs of matching wood or very simple hardware. Traditionally, Shaker furniture was used with no decoration or "adornment." The Shakers valued simple, clean lines in architecture and furniture, as well as other crafts. This style was in keeping with their values and beliefs. The Shakers preferred furniture that was built into the structure. It was neat and no space was wasted. Their furniture was very functional, with many drawers, shelves and doors to protect the contents. Furniture included Shaker kitchen cabinets. The requirement to create durable furniture can be seen in the use of dovetailed wood joints. These joints, still found in Shaker style kitchen cabinets, needed no nails or glue. In fact, the dovetail joints allowed the wood to expand and contract as a single piece. The result was a joint that undamaged by the swelling and shrinking of the wood with time and dampness. Shaker kitchen cabinets are particularly popular in New England, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and New York. They are commonly seen in many country kitchens and in rustic cottage style homes. Their simple beauty has made them very popular through the years. Although the Shakers were widely known to paint their cabinetry in only Venetian red, blue and ocher, many companies make Shaker kitchen cabinets in a wide range of colors today. One reason for the great popularity of Shaker kitchen cabinets is their solid durability. Another reason is their beauty and simplicity. It has been said that Shaker style "never intrudes, never invades, never shouts, look at me!" These characteristics have made Shaker kitchen cabinets the perfect fit for many kitchen renovation and home décor styles. Shaker kitchen cabinets are particularly beautiful in any of the warm woods, such as: • Maple • Chestnut • Birch • Honey pine • Butternut Whether you are renovating an old kitchen in a historic home or remodeling and upgrading a more modern kitchen, Shaker kitchen cabinets might be just the right style for you. If you want warmth, simplicity and functionality of excellent design and solid craftsmanship, choosing Shaker kitchen cabinets might add just the finishing touch your kitchen cabinet needs. shaker cabinets, kitchen cabinets shaker, shaker style cabinets, shaker kitchen cabinets, shaker style kitchen cabinets, white shaker cabinets, kitchen cabinets, kitchen cabinet, kitchen renovation, kitchen, xylothroz http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qa1-_Q2VSA This video was created by: Kitchen Cabinet Value 20504 Hall Road, Clinton Township, MI 48038 (586) 228-3262 Google Places: http://g.co/maps/ub2fb

It was high time we made a bed for our new house. This one started with riving out green posts from chestnut oak. These were planed down, then mortised before being turned on our treadle lathe. The rails stiles and headboard of the bed are quarter sawn red oak we milled last year. The bed is finished with a simple mix of raw linseed oil cut 50/50 with citrus solvent.

Instead of raised panel, I wanted to build shaker style faces instead. I built new drawers since the old ones were pretty worn out and I also turned the faux faces in front of the sink into functioning tip out drawers. I used 3/4" oak for the rails and stiles and 1/4" oak plywood for the panels. The doors are made with tongue and groove joints.

This was our first hand tool project using hardwood. It is a classic Shaker design, it was also the first project with a drawer. We used mortise and tenons on the two frames as well as dowels where the bottom frame meets the legs just below the drawer. The finish is straight from the plane, no sanding. The drawer has a solid cedar bottom designed for seasonal expansion. Check out our 30 day trial membership at www.freemonthonrobsworkshop.com
