There are three variants - the standard F-35A, designed for conventional takeoff, the F-35B for short take off and vertical landing, and the F-35C which is designed for use on carriers. F-35 FIGHTER PROFILE Aircrew: One Max speed: 1.6Mach (1,217.3mph) Length: 51ft Wingspan: 35ft Max. altitude: 50,000ft Today marks the first time an F-35C has been landed on a carrier using the tail-hook system, where a large metal hook hanging from the back of the aircraft snags on a cable laid across the deck of the carrier, slowing it down very quickly. Joe DellaVedova, spokesman for the Pentagon's F-35 joint program office, said the landing was part of a two-week sea-based test that runs until November 17. The sea testing of the plane will give officials key data about the ship's performance on a carrier, and allow any adjustments needed to keep the program on track for initial use by the fleet in 2018

And subsequent takeoff from the deck with a Foxbat A22 aircraft built by Aeroprakt. With footage of six cameras including inside the aircraft. Whilst filming a plane flying close to a cargo ship that already had the nickname "aircraft carrier" due to its unique features, the "just in case something goes wrong" flat area for emergency landings just looks too good, so I cannot restrain myself and get away with landing on the moving ship. The ship was empty and very bow high which is not that visible in the video due to the camera angles, that created annoying low level turbulence and an untidy landing. Tom and Aalbert save the day by courageously helping me to take off, as the deck was slippery with salt spray. I won't do it again unless an aircraft carrier would invite me (please do !). But it worked - thanks to an amazing aircraft, the STOL Aeroprakt Foxbat A22. The ship was sailing at 9 knots speed over ground, the true windspeed was 14 knots, combined just under the full flap stall speed with just myself in the plane and full long range fueltanks. Thanks everyone for the help ! The ship is a 3,500 tonne multipurpose vessel with a total length 93 metres, deck in front of bridge 60 metres x 15 metres. The ship, due to its unique design, has twice the deck space and hold space of conventional ships of the same tonnage. It is designed for volume, not for weight. Oct 13. PS after the ship docked a few days later in Portugal its crew sent footage from more cameras by USB stick - here that video: http://youtu.be/BcQLa_25PkU. That is also better edited than the first video (sorry ... windows live moviemaker now replaced by better editing software plus I whacked the video together in just an hour on the laptop whilst travelling :-)

A great video of the worlds largest aircraft carrier ship conducting flight operations. SOUTH CHINA SEA - Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 1, including Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 1’s Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108), and aircraft from Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2, began routine operations in the South China Sea, Feb. 18. Prior to their operations in the South China Sea, ships and aircraft from within the strike group conducted training off the islands of Hawaii and Guam to maintain and improve their readiness and develop cohesion as a strike group. The strike group recently enjoyed a port visit to Guam and after departing the Marianas, conducted operations in the Philippine Sea. “The training completed over the past few weeks has really brought the team together and improved our effectiveness and readiness as a strike group” said Rear Adm. James Kilby, commander, CSG 1. “We are looking forward to demonstrating those capabilities while building upon existing strong relationships with our allies, partners and friends in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.” Vinson last deployed to the Western-Pacific in 2015 and conducted a bilateral exercise with the Royal Malaysian Navy and Royal Malaysian Air Force in the South China Sea. Vinson first operated in the South China Sea in 1983 and in total, has operated there during 16 previous deployments over its 35 year history. While deployed, the Carl Vinson CSG will remain under U.S. 3rd Fleet command and control, including beyond the international dateline, which previously divided operational areas of responsibility for 3rd and 7th Fleets. Third Fleet operating forward offers additional options to the Pacific Fleet commander by leveraging the capabilities of 3rd and 7th Fleets. This operational concept allows both numbered fleets to complement one another and provide the foundation of stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. CVW-2 includes the "Black Knights" of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 4, the "Blue Hawks" of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 78, the "Bounty Hunters" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 2, the "Blue Blasters" of VFA-34, the "Kestrels" of VFA-137, the "Golden Dragons" of VFA-192, the "Black Eagles" of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 113, the "Gauntlets" of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 136 and the "Providers" of Fleet Logistic Support Squadron (VRC) 30. Dramatic footage has been released showing the moment Harrison Okene, who had been trapped in an air bubble of a capsized boat for almost three days, was rescued by divers. Dramatic footage emerged on Tuesday showing the unlikely rescue in May of a ship's cook, who survived for almost three days trapped in an air bubble in his sunken ship. Harrison Okene had been trapped for 60 hours in the ship, which sank 98ft underwater off the coast of Nigeria, before divers found him. The divers from the DCN global diving company had been searching the tugboat for bodies, but in the video they can be heard shouting that a man is "alive" in the ship. Mr Okene was the only member of the 12 person crew who survived the sinking. The divers can be seen helping Mr Okene put on scuba diving equipment to swim out of the sunken ship. Once back on dry land, the cook was kept in a decompression chamber for 60 hours before he was reunited with his family. The Russian Navy (Russian: Военно-морской Флот Российской Федерации (ВМФ России), tr. Voyenno-morskoy Flot Rossiyskoy Federatsii (VMF Rossii), lit. Military-Maritime Fleet of the Russian Federation) is the naval arm of the Russian military. The present Russian Navy was formed in January 1992, succeeding the Navy of the Commonwealth of Independent States, which had itself succeeded the Soviet Navy following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991. The regular Russian Navy was established by Peter the Great (Peter I) in October 1696. Ascribed to Peter I is the oft quoted statement: "A ruler that has but an army has one hand, but he who has a navy has both." The symbols of the Russian Navy, the St. Andrew's flag and ensign (seen to the right), and most of its traditions were established personally by Peter I. Neither Jane's Fighting Ships nor the International Institute for Strategic Studies list any standard ship prefixes for the vessels of the Russian Navy. For official U.S. Navy photographs, they are sometimes referred to as "RFS"—"Russian Federation Ship". However, the Russian Navy does not use this convention for itself. The Russian Navy possesses the vast majority of the former Soviet naval forces, and currently comprises the Northern Fleet, the Russian Pacific Fleet, the Russian Black Sea Fleet, the Russian Baltic Fleet, the Russian Caspian Flotilla, Naval Aviation, and the coastal troops (consisting of the naval infantry and the coastal missile and artillery troops). A recently approved rearmament program has placed the development of the navy on an equal footing with the strategic nuclear forces for the first time in Soviet and Russian history. The program, covering the period until 2015, is expected to see the replacement of 45 percent of the inventory of the Russian Navy. Out of 4.9 trillion rubles ($192.16 billion) allocated for military rearmament, 25 percent will go into building new ships. "We are already building practically as many ships as we did in Soviet times," First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov said during a visit to Severodvinsk in July 2007, "The problem now is not lack of money, but how to optimize production so that the navy can get new ships three, not five, years after laying them down." The Russian Navy suffered severely since the dissolution of the Soviet Union due to insufficient maintenance, lack of funding and subsequent effects on the training of personnel and timely replacement of equipment. Another setback is attributed to Russia's domestic shipbuilding industry which is reported to have been in decline as to their capabilities of constructing contemporary hardware efficiently. Some analysts even say that because of this Russia's naval capabilities have been facing a slow but certain "irreversible collapse". Some analysts say that the recent rise in gas and oil prices has enabled a sort of renaissance of the Russian Navy due to increased available funds, which may allow Russia to begin "developing the capacity to modernize". In August 2014, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said that Russian naval capabilities would be bolstered with new weapons and equipment within the next six years in response to NATO deployments in eastern Europe and recent developments in Ukraine.

It’s an amazing , of a military helicopter landing on the deck of a rather small ship in rough seas and see the extent to which the deck of the ship is just rolling with the waves. It’s amazing they can land in these conditions. Operating helicopters onboard ships is extremely complex, due in part to the difficulty of landing a helicopter on a moving platform, but also due to numerous practical engineering ====================================================== -------Other videos : Crazy! Have you ever wondered what it takes to make breakfast for a boat full of US Sailors and Marines? We climbed aboard the USS Arlington to see how Navy and Marine culinary specialists get the job done. Turns out, it takes thousands of eggs, endless strips of bacon, and (ahem) boatloads of hash browns. Good footage of the USS Enterprise (CV-6) under attack. The "Big E", was the sixth aircraft carrier of the United States Navy and the seventh U.S. Navy ship to bear that name. She was a ship of the Yorktown class launched in 1936, and one of only three American carriers commissioned prior to World War II to survive the war (the others being Saratoga and Ranger). She participated in more major actions of the war against Japan than did any other US ship. These actions included the Battle of Midway, the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, various other air-sea engagements during the Guadalcanal campaign, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf, as well as the "Doolittle Raid" on Tokyo. On three separate occasions during the Pacific War the Japanese announced that she had been sunk in battle. Enterprise earned 20 battle stars, the most for any U.S. warship in World War II. She was the only ship outside of the British Royal Navy to earn the highest award of the British Admiralty Pennant in the more than 400 years since its creation. Some have labeled her the most glorious and honored ship in all of United States Naval history, rivaled only perhaps by the 18th century frigate USS Constitution.

Behold The Future...This Ship Is A Hovercraft Until It's An Airplane. How low can you soar? When is an airplane actually a boat? That’s as much a legal question as it is a philosophical one for FlyShip, a German purveyor of low-flying boat-like seaplanes. FlyShip's decades-old AirFish series of vehicles are legally boats, but they fly like very, very low-skimming planes. And they’re working on a new version. Taking advantage of the ground effect in aerodynamics, by which a vehicle flying fast and low generates lift under the wings and reduces drag, making the plane almost float above the surface of the sea. For decades Soviet engineers built special vehicles called Ekranoplans to take advantage of this ability over shallow water, lakes, and rivers. Boeing even looked into the design for a cargo vehicle. In 1992, Popular Science covered a much earlier version of the Airfish, noting that the low-flying planes could literally fly under the radar. Plus, “the potential efficiency of ground-effect flight might give such craft enormous range as compared with aircraft” is seen as useful as an anti-submarine weapon. Twenty-four years later, there are very few ground effect vehicles in the world, though the promise remains. The proposed next-generation flying ship would operate like a shallow boat in harbors, a hovercraft while building speed, and then a low-flying plane on the open water. It could even hop small islands or modest obstacles in its way. A video about the hoverwing was uploaded earlier this month. Watch it below, for both its future promises and fascinating PowerPoint-style musing on Baltic trade. http://www.popsci.com/new-ship-concept-is-hovercraft-until-its-an-airplane?src=SOC&dom=fb ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ New Generation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZnMpzESwPg

Emergency Landing on Cargo Ship Alra by Sea Harrier ZA176 Remarkable news footage on the recovery of Sea Harrier ZA176 and Sub-Lt Ian Watson after the Alraigo docked in Santa Cruz, Tenerife, June 1983. . In 2007, Britain's National Archives released a number of Royal Navy files, and the second inquiry report was finally made public. Noting that Watson had completed only 75 percent of his training before he had been sent to sea, the board blamed Watson's inexperience, and his commanders for assigning him an airplane "not fully prepared for the sortie," a reference to radio problems. Nonetheless, Watson was reprimanded and given a desk job. .

What are air force jets doing in the arabian sea just right next to and over a cruise ship? Over and over again, they are checking out MV Astor, a German cruise ship under the flag of the Bahamas. Thanks to user afrasyabutube who says that the jet is a FA-18 Hornet fighter plane probably US. As we first saw a half moon flag at a first plane, we thought that we 2nd plane was also Pakistani.

UK to send new aircraft carrier loaded with F35 jets into South China Sea The United Kingdom will deploy its new aircraft carrier, loaded with two squadrons of F-35 aircraft into the politically-fraught South China Sea. British Defense Minister Gavin Williamson confirmed in a speech that the Royal Navy’s HMS Queen Elizabeth will sail into waters that are the subject of dispute between China and other nations. At an address given to the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in London, Williamson said Britain was the second largest investor in the region and it must display “hard power” and “lethality” to help protect interests. The £3 billion ($3.9 billion) carrier’s outing will also sail into the Middle East and Mediterranean and will be officially a mixed U.K./U.S. deployment. “Significantly British and American F-35s will be embedded in the carrier’s air wing. Enhancing the reach and lethality of our forces (and) reinforcing the fact that United States remains the very closest of partners,” Williamson said. The U.K. defense minister did not confirm exact dates for the mission. China has laid claim to almost all of the strategic South China Sea which is viewed as important for shipping lanes and potential resources. United States destroyers USS Spruance and USS Preble sailed close to the Spratly Islands, territory disputed by China and the Philippines. China claimed that the ships entered without official permission but a spokesman for the US Navy’s 7th Fleet told CNN that the operation was to “challenge excessive maritime claims and preserve access to the waterways as governed by international law.” China is in the process of developing its own aircraft carrier capability, with currently only one considered combat-ready. According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) the country could have as many as 6 carriers by the 2030s. Source www.cnbc.com

Top worst cruise ship incidents! These are the worst cruises and cruise ships that sank and the most horrible cruise ship events! 8. Norwegian Dawn Perhaps one of the biggest threats people tend to think about while aboard a cruise ship is a giant wave crashing into it and toppling it over… or an iceberg. Well, people’s nightmares were brought to life on a ship in April 2005. The Norwegian Dawn sailed from New York on the 10th but the sea didn’t strike until its returning voyage. The vessel was sailing through stormy weather when it was hit by three rogue waves in a row! Although they didn’t knock it over, the 70-foot giants caused damage to the ship by breaking many windows on the 9th and 10th decks. They also caused a substantial amount of flooding to 62 staterooms. Plus, the hull of the Dawn was bent when its extra anchor smashed into it. Luckily, only four people ended up with small injuries. The made a diversion to Charleston, South Carolina to fix the ship and continued shortly after to New York. Although they endured a frightening night aboard the Norwegian Dawn, the passengers received half of their money back, half of the cost of a future cruise, and free drinks for the remainder of the trip. 7. Carnival Triumph In February 2013, another unfortunate event took place aboard the Carnival Triumph. Passengers delighted in pina-coladas and sunbathing when the ship began its voyage; however, about halfway through the cruise, something adverse happened. The vessel’s engine room caught fire, causing the Triumph to lose power in the Gulf of Mexico. As you can imagine, losing power means losing just about every convenience a cruise ship has to offer; the propulsion system went down, as well as the air conditioning, lights, and septic system. Passengers were stuck in the middle of the gulf without cool air, warm air, or any place to relieve themselves that wasn’t disgusting. Bags upon bags of human waste piled up around the Triumph, and people were forced to live in the unsanitary conditions for four days as the ship was towed back to shore. Carnival received a lot of backlash for this event as the fire was caused by negligence and improper care of the vessel. The Triumph ultimately earned the name “poop cruise,” which people still use to refer to it today.

A United States Navy Destroyer operating in international waters in the Baltic Sea experienced several close interactions by Russian aircraft on April 11 and 12. USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) encountered multiple, aggressive flight maneuvers by Russian aircraft that were performed within close proximity of the ship. On April 11, Donald Cook was conducting deck landing drills with an Allied military helicopter when two Russian SU-24 jets made numerous, close-range and low altitude passes at approximately 3 p.m. local. One of the passes, which occurred while the Allied helicopter was refueling on the deck of Donald Cook, was deemed unsafe by the ship’s commanding officer. As a safety precaution, flight operations were suspended until the SU-24s departed the area. On April 12, while Donald Cook was operating in international waters in the Baltic Sea, a Russian KA-27 Helix helicopter conducted circles at low altitude around the ship, seven in total, at approximately 5 p.m. local. The helicopter passes were also deemed unsafe and unprofessional by the ship’s commanding officer. About 40 minutes following the interaction with the Russian helicopter, two Russian SU-24 jets made numerous close-range and low altitude passes, 11 in total. The Russian aircraft flew in a simulated attack profile and failed to respond to repeated safety advisories in both English and Russian. USS Donald Cook’s commanding officer deemed several of these maneuvers as unsafe and unprofessional. We have deep concerns about the unsafe and unprofessional Russian flight maneuvers. These actions have the potential to unnecessarily escalate tensions between countries, and could result in a miscalculation or accident that could cause serious injury or death. U.S. officials are using existing diplomatic channels to address the interactions, while the incidents are also being reviewed through U.S. Navy channels.
