During the night they should be aligned. If you cannot avoid sleeping in the fetus position, doctors recommend you should put a pillow between the knees. I’m going to show you how 8 popular sleeping habits are possibly interfering with your ability to build muscle and remain injury free. Don’t be embarrassed if you wind up finding out that you are doing at least a few of these. The important thing is that I’m here to help. The first thing that you want to do before you even get into bed is stretch. Now I’m sure you’ve heard that it is not good to do static stretching before working out but do you know why? The reason is twofold. When you stretch before lifting you are interrupting the stored motor patterns that your body has to make movement efficient and memorable. This means, with the new muscle length provided by the stretching your bench press movement will not match up with the one that is stored. This leads to awkward pressing and an increase likelihood of injury. The second thing that occurs is that the increased length disrupts the overlap of muscle fibers and interferes with the strength of contraction. If this happens, you can expect to see a decline in your strength levels and force output at the exact worst time that you would want that to happen, just before your workout. Next, you want to be sure you adjust the sheets at the end of the bed before you even get in it. Why? This is because the tightness of your sheets will directly impact the tightness of your ankles in the long run. When you lay in bed your ankles will be pulled down into plantarflexion because of the sheets that are tucked in to the end of your bed. If you stay in this position for say 8 to 10 hours, you can guarantee that your calves will get tight and your ankle will lose mobility over time. Try squatting with bad ankle mobility and you will quickly see your leg gains go down as you no longer can descend low enough in the squat. The health of your shoulders is paramount to a big upper body. Just ask anyone who has ever injured their shoulder what it meant to their ability to lift and make gains in their chest, arms and back not to mention their delts. The key is to limit the tightness that is likely to happen just by avoiding common but bad sleeping postures. If you lay on your side with your hand under your head, make sure you don’t do this on top of the pillow. You can see instantly how this internally rotates your shoulder and leads to tight posterior shoulder capsules. If you place the hand under the pillow however you can dramatically change the situation and actually help to restore some lost external rotation. The same can happen when you lay on your stomach. Your arms get internally rotated at the shoulder to support your head on the pillow. Even worse however, your low back takes a beating as you compress your lumbar spine and adaptively shorten your lumber paraspinal muscles. This leads to the all too common low back pain. The best way to sleep is either on your back with the sheets loosened at the end of the bed or on your side with your legs straight and a pillow between your knees. Either way, you are minimizing the damage that you are doing to your body for extensive periods of time every night and giving your body a better chance of making pain free gains in the gym. Finally, upon waking make sure you immediately start the rehydration process by drinking two 12-16 ounce glasses of water. You have just gone a long period of time without drinking any water so you will want to get this in you to provide the environment for muscle gains. And of course, never underestimate the value of good sleep. Cortisol will be released by your body the less sleep you get. This will directly counteract the benefits of testosterone and lead to less muscle. Sleep as much as you can. Ideally, the height of your pillow should match the width of one shoulder. - Overly soft pillows can cause your head to tilt backward and increase snoring. Use an extra pillow or elevate the head of your bed a few inches to stop your tongue from falling back over your windpipe. - To stop leg cramps, get the calf muscle stretched and strengthened. Also, try doing yoga or massaging your legs before bedtime. Keep in mind that you should exercise regularly to achieve good results. - If you suffer from frequent heartburn, lie on your left side while sleeping. The left-side sleeping position prevents stomach contents from coming back up into the esophagus that preventing heartburn. - Exercise in the morning and afternoon. Exercises help you tone your whole body, improves your blood circulation, and helps you fall asleep much faster. - If you want to wake up early in the morning, all you need to do is go to bed early in the evening. Set your alarm for the same time every day, even on the weekends. You will see the results within a week! - Keep in mind that sleep disorders can be caused by many factors, from fatigue and uncomfortable shoes to problems with the digestive or nervous system. This is because when your heart pumps blood out to your body, it gets circulated and then flows back to your right side of your heart. But if you sleep on your right side, the pressure of your body smashes up against the blood vessels and makes it more difficult to get the blood back to your heart. Basically, it’s more work for your heart. If you’re older, or have a weak heart or plaque buildup your arteries, then this really puts a lot more pressure and stress and could result in a heart attack or stroke while sleeping. This is also why pregnant women are told to sleep on their left side. The baby is taking up room and is pushing the mom’s organs upward, so there is less space. The mother’s heart is already working harder during the pregnancy. So sleeping on the right side, where there is already less space and extra pressure from the organs being smashed together because of the baby, could hinder blood flow to the mom’s heart, as well as the baby’s. And if you’re going to sleep on your side, you may consider using a body pillow for extra support and comfort. A lot of people choose to sleep naked simply because they find it more comfortable. But sleeping with nothing on has science-based health benefits, and, on the contrary, can cause your trouble you probably didn’t know about. A survey of 1,500 people aged 25 to 55 in six different countries showed that only 30% of us sleep naked and the rest prefer to stay in their underwear or in some comfortable pajamas. One of the most obvious reasons to sleep with no clothes on is to get deeper shut-eye. Sleeping naked is a good way to keep your skin cool without changing the temperature of your bedroom. By skipping on the sleepwear, you give your body, especially the parts that tend to sweat more than others (like your feet and privates), a chance to breathe. A woman’s genitalia can be an ideal breeding ground for fungi and bacteria. Sleeping nude helps keep this area cool, dry, and ventilated, reducing the risk of developing a UTI or a yeast infection. For men, tight-fitting underwear overheats the testes and can affect semen quality and reproductive health. A lot of people, women in particular, usually feel self-conscious about their bodies, even if the supposed “flaws” they have aren’t actually there! When you embrace your body just the way it is, you exude confidence in whatever clothing you decide to put on it. If we get overheated at night, our stress hormone levels stay high. Plus, our human growth hormone that’s responsible for cell-renewal isn’t released at all. So your body panics and chooses to store fat instead of burning it. If you’re among the 3% of people that sleepwalk, don’t throw away your pj’s! There have been tons of cases where naked sleepwalkers had problems with their neighbors and even law enforcement.
