A year ago today, we lost the iconic rocker Tom Petty. The 66-year-old died of cardiac arrest. In his memory, a new tribute collection called "An American Treasure" features previously unheard recording and live performances. Anthony Mason spoke to Petty's daughter, Adria, in her first TV interview since her father's death.

There was so much there with Tom (An American Treasure) - Thank you, Adria, for giving us just a little more of him. PETTY (the Bio By Warren Zane) confirmed what I'd always thought/felt was true of Tom; he is and will be missed. https://www.amazon.com/Petty-Biography-Warren-Zanes-ebook/dp/B00VPZVR0G
I love and have total respect for Petty because to me he epitomizes what I see as the American Dream, which is setting out to accomplish "Exactly" what you want using only your raw skills and beliefs and then seeing that through no matter what. In 1988 I was 20 and my bro 21 and we were bored wondering what to do that summer night when his phone rang and it was this nice but very nerdy guy who he worked with at the Disneyland Hotel saying are you going to see Petty tonight at the Pacific Amp? My friend said naw just going to hang out at home and hung up the phone. Two hrs later we were heading down buy ticks from a scalper drinking Mickeys Big Mouth beers and toking a spliff. True story.
Wow beautiful! So nice she did this while she herself was grieving.. to put that into something positive for his fans!!! I believe that she has alot of his qualities in her. We love tom!!! Thankyou that is so awesome! God bless you and your lovely familly!! Beautiful baby girl toi!! 😇❤
They wonder what would he think? There's a reason much of this stuff never made it on a record. Nobody would know that more than Mike and Benmont since they worked with him for 40yrs. Tom never played this stuff on his Sirius FM station while he was alive either. The whole thing reeks of money and taking advantage of grieving fans while it's still a hot commodity. I'm one of those fans who grew up with his music, have every one of his original studio albums, first saw them in concert in 1983, and I'm not buying this.
Love u adria.
So down to earth and humble....
Noone like tom.he was so talented n goodlooking.
Looks like my sons father.
Its so hard knowing hes not on this earth nomore....
Until the ressurection John 5:28'29
God. My heart goes out to her. I lost my daddy when he was 64. In my mind, he was an American treasure too. I don't care how old you are, it hurts so bad when daddy leaves his little girls. Thank you for sharing him with the world.
It's incredible how I never met Tom, how I was only a distant stranger who was only connected to him only through his music. Yet his passing has broke my heart and made me feel so emotional and will miss him.
TomPetty was the best of my life and will be available to see you soon Amen has been stronger then ever since I was a kid who has updated her profile and pictures and i am ms JoAnne m [email protected]
Can’t believe it’s already been over a year without him. I am forever thankful that I got to see him and the heartbreakers for the first and sadly last time on the 40th anniversary tour for my fourteenth birthday, I’ll never forget it. Love and miss you TP💕🎸
Wow I got big chills watching this! Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were and still are a big part of my life, growing up in the 70's. So many songs are attached to memories of my life. I'm Glade to have seen them in concert a few times. Rest in peace ! ✌🏻
After over a year of getting used to such a huge loss for all of us, this video was something that at times made me smile but it also almost hit me just as hard as last October all over again. What a huge impact! I don't think there is a person alive who truly saw just how irreplaceable he was until after he was gone. Miss you Tom. RIP
Tom was one of my favourites artists. I am not surprised that he was a loving family man as he always came across, laid back and caring. A big loss for all his fans but an even bigger, sadder loss for his loving family.
Tom was a cool guy. So nice and laid back. Liked hearing him and the band growing up during the 60's and 70's.
Damn the Torpedoes Tom Petty! What a great guy, singer and personality we all had with him here. He's very missed. He loved his family very much.
Just saw this interview and what a great thing to do in remembrance of a dad and friends. I have been a big fan since a child who was born in Gainesville fl in 1975. I was luck to have a friend who’s uncle knew Tom and went to school with him so on a couple occasions I got to go behind stage at concerts in Gainesville when I was in my teens and I believe it was the full moon fever tour when I paint a picture of Tom and meet his daughters and band mates who I gave the painting to. They all seemed to like it but I never got a chance to meet Tom himself anyway his music has been a huge part of my life and great memories. Thanks Adria for going through all that for his fans ! I lost my father as well so I know that pain and if you see this I just was wondering if you all might still have that watercolor of your father I did all those years ago ? It would mean so much!
What made this guy so great besides the music, he actually cared for his fans coming to his shows...Unlike that sellout bum Bruce Springsteen who is now charging `$1000 seats for a stupid Broadway concert see stoneanddigitaldave.com
When Adria and her daughter, Everly, and Tom's brother, Bruce, and his children were in Gainesville for our Tom Petty Birthday Bash, an all-weekend long Petty party, they both spoke so completely from their hearts at the park dedication to Tom where he, Bruce and their friends used to play as kids. My favorite comment was Bruce's when he said that, after the dedication, his children and Everly were going to play in the park. Made my eyes well up. Thank you Adria, Annakim, Bruce, Jane, for being here and for sharing your family with us. It meant so much to us Gainesvillians for you to be here.
As a life long Tom Petty fan, I just moved to Florida... I might need to take a nice ride up to Gainesville and just be there. With Tom Petty Radio on in his car the whole time because that's all I listen to anyway... Literally the only reason I keep paying for Sirius/XM
Thank you, Adria, Annakim, Dana, Benmont, Mike, Bruce, Dylan, Everly, Jane, and everyone in the Petty family and close circle of friends, for being so open and generous with the life and legacy of your loved one. I hope you're comforted in knowing that the music of Tom and the Heartbreakers meant so much to so many. We got lucky.
I met the band, when they would throw free concerts, in Gainville, free beer and food, andafter the show, they asked where I was headed..I told them im out of gas and money, in my camper on my 62 pick up, the called a friend and got me a job picking grape fruits..i stayed at the 5 ac. farm with them for about three weeks, very real guys, great to know they hit it so big. I was thinking maybe, you don't have to live like a refugee was inspired by my rig...it was a rolling hillbilly shack, left them headed to key west, I remember them taking me with them to the radio station interview.they were all hyped up about and album..come out.
Such a tragic ending to a man who sounded more "folk" rock than any other category. Like the Bob Dylan's, Bob Seger's, John Cougar Mellencamp's; artists/musicians such as them. I put Tom Petty in that category. Remembering their lyrics and being able to understand the words coming out of their mouths and relating to it all because they were topics that touched everyone at some point in their lives. Idk, maybe it's my own category, but, that's how I "heard" Tom Petty. He was one of the best among many. Rest in Peace and thank you CBS for sharing this segment with us.
How wonderful to get to see Tom’s daughter speak about him and this labor of love that she, Dana, Ben and Mike made happen. How lucky Adria was to have Tom as her dad but how hard it must be for her that he’s gone. He truly was an American Treasure.
