The lake is incredible, surrounded by lush green mountains. It’s a perfect place in Rwanda to spend some time relaxing, learning about the culture, and eating. One of the main Rwandan foods to eat at Lake Kivu is sambaza, a fish similar to sardines. To begin this food and cultural tour of Gisenyi, Lake Kivu, we first stopped off at the local market, and took a boat ride. They were not allowed to fish on that day to control the fishing, but the fishermen gave us a quick lesson on how they fish, and took us out on a boat just to show us. It was one of the highlights of the day for me. The fishing boats are so peaceful and the rowing songs were amazing. After having a quick snack of some deep fried sambaza, which were delicious, we continued on to one of the biggest fresh markets in Gisenyi. We saw ladies pounding cassava leaves, and stopped to eat some fruit. The tree tomatoes in Rwanda by the way are delicious. Ibyiwacu Restaurant - Next we ate a quick Rwandan food lunch at a local restaurant. Buffets are very common in Rwanda, you choose all your different starches, with beans, and a couple of different sauces, and you can choose if you want meat or without meal. Overall, very good and fresh food, a little plain, but good with some extra chili sauce. Price - 1,500 RWF ($1.70) per person Next we headed to a local home for a home cooked African meal, including some of the local ingredients commonly used in the culture around Lake Kivu. Sambaza are a staple, but since we already had some fried, they made a peanut (groundnut) stew with the fish, and also made some vegetable dishes, with rice, and a number of other starches. The sambaza with peanut sauce was the BEST meal of my entire trip to Rwanda. Mark , please do not abuse the local’s generosity and kindness by not paying their produce. They may be kind but too shy to ask you to pay. These people are poor and do not have the luxury like you to travel the world.

Again, another amazing video from Rwanda. Mark that green vegetable at the restaurant is Stinging Nettle, it's poisonous to touch but makes a delicious side dish. In Ethiopia we call it Sama and it's usually served during Lent.
Dogface McGee (6 days ago)
The vegetable that is poisonous to touch is the same stinging nettles we have all over the United States

The small fish (we call them sprats in the UK) taste better without the head. The head adds the bitter taste. The green vegetable that Mark called poisonous are stinging nettles. They are delicious But should be handled with gloves before cooking.

I know that Rwanda and Ethiopia are both majority Christian countries, but in your videos it looks like almost everyone follows the Muslim custom of only eating with the right hand. Have you ever asked about that?
maylyn54 (19 days ago)
Patrick Horgan all Africans eat with the right hand.... it has nothing to do with religion

So from the last 3 African countries you've covered I see that food there is 'cooked' but you'd struggle to call it 'a cuisine' as such. Nothing really added, no 'angle', just food 'cooked'...

Lake Kivu is a fresh water lake and, along with Cameroonian Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun, is one of three that are known to undergo limnic eruptions. Around the lake, geologists found evidence of massive local extinctions about every thousand years, presumably caused by outgassing events. The trigger for lake overturns is unknown in Lake Kivu's case, but volcanic activity is suspected. The gaseous chemical composition of exploding lakes is unique to each lake, in Lake Kivu's case, methane and carbon dioxide due to lake water interaction with a volcano.

Just to make sure I understood you. Next, time I don't have a can opener pour some cooking oil in a pot mix up some veggies in there and boil them down. Lol several times in this video your editing blip out too much leaving me wondering what to do.
Noor Jahan (1 month ago)
The vegetable was stinging nettle. It’s not poisonous but it does sting a lot when you touch it. The new young leaves don’t sting and are used as food and in traditional English cuisine usually in a soup. It’s very nutritious!
Young Pak (1 month ago)
Once again, another great video. Thanks for putting in all the effort to put this video together. You don’t need the food channel, the food channel needs you!!
