Hope everyone is enjoying the video and has a great start to their weekend! Here are some responses about frequently asked cards for this one. Tabernacle of Pendrell Vale - It isn't on the list because it doesn't have cumulative upkeep, it isn't an increasing amount of mana, it is always the same. Braid of Fire - Definitely an interesting one since it got powered up following the elimination of mana burn, and while this thing is a powerhouse in EDH and on kitchen tables because of that, it is too slow for constructed formats. Herlad of Leshrac - Another card that's nice in EDH, but too slow for GPs and PTs.
Lilac Pilot (12 hours ago)
I'd rather sac a land as an addition casting cost than cum keep
xCCflierx (13 days ago)
Muldrotha is amazing with this mechanic. I like having the choice to just recast any of these after using then for a few turns. Especially mind harness.
Aaackermann (20 days ago)
Does anyone knows why juju bubble is so freaking horrible? What was the reasoning?

Mana Chains kicks ass
Christopher Horton (20 days ago)
Illusionary Presence, too.
Charred Husk (21 days ago)
...so how is Braid of Fire not on this list?!
Charred Husk (21 days ago)
Also apologies for asking a redundant question. My phone doesn’t seem to always load pinned comments in the right order.
Charred Husk (21 days ago)
Nizzahon Magic it makes me think in some cases it might be worth adding an “honorable mentions” section, though with the addition of commander in your newer lists sometimes it doesn’t seem like this will be as much of an issue.
Charred Husk (21 days ago)
Nizzahon Magic while that is true, objectively the card has a more significant power advantage then several on this list that had been played in previous standard formats. While I do understand that you are partially restricted by the rubric that you use to score the cards, this seems like an instance in which it misses on the actual value of the card. I will say that it might not be fast enough in modern or legacy, but the card provides a significant value for commander and for more casual formats that shouldn’t be under-estimated, especially since mana burn is no longer a formal rule.
Nizzahon Magic (21 days ago)
Because it isn't that good in formats like Modern. Its too slow.
NovemberCountry (24 days ago)
Yes! Glacial Chasm! Got one. Never managed to make it work. 😁
mageius (25 days ago)
So I have one problem with the list you are excluding command on this 1 as there are a few cards that see a lot of play
Tucker DeBord (1 month ago)
Really expected contaminate to be on this list kind of surprised
Spencer Richardson (1 month ago)
This list plus soleminity, your welcome.
Dante Wright (1 month ago)
It is pronounced YO-tun, not JO-tun
King Ginger (1 month ago)
Man, you forgot Braid of Fire. In a mono red burn deck or if you pair it with Elephant Grass then you'll never end up paying the cumulative upkeep cost of Elephant Grass because the red mana you get from it will pay the Grass cost! I'm gonna run it in my Lord Windgrace commander deck pairing it with Grass and Darkest Hour. Basically it ensures that your opponents will not be able to attack you for the rest of the game short of having some sort of removal spells
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
I forgot nothing. It has 0 points.
Gardner Pierce (1 month ago)
I’m super surprised that Braid of Fire didn’t appear on this list. It’s probably my favorite cumulative upkeep card. And literally the only cumulative upkeep card with no downside
Arctic Alpaca (1 month ago)
I have a deck built entirely around Eon hub and glacial chasm. Eon Hub says players skip their upkeep step so it works really well with all of the cumulative upkeep cards in the deck. Worked really well for a long time until we switch to commander.
Fakey McFakerSon (1 month ago)
Would you agree that Braid Of Fire is actually the best cumulative upkeep?
Fernando Banda (1 month ago)
No
Daniel K (1 month ago)
Hej Nizza. A top 10 permanent destruction spells would be awesome
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
Do you mean "Destroy target permanent"?
TheMixedMaster (1 month ago)
I use wall of shards in my modern bant walls deck

Why isn't Braid of fire in the #1 slot?

Eon Hub.
I'm just watching this for EDH uses. Woot woot
Steven O'Neil (1 month ago)
Man, I was sure Braid of Fire was gonna be #1.

If this is MTG Top 10 Worst Mechanics in a 10 part series, then the video should be called "MTG Top 10 Worst Mechanics: #10 Cumulative Upkeep"
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
It isn't on the list, that's the point. It is one of the 10 worse.
Robert Dant (1 month ago)
Ha HAW you don’t know how to pronounce Jötunn
Brad B (1 month ago)
Ancestral knowledge is really good too
The I of the beholder (1 month ago)
No Braids of Fire? Pffft...
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
Nope!
Kenzo Staelens (1 month ago)
9:36 number 8..... 3 you mean right?
Andrew McWherter (1 month ago)
Its age counters, not time counters. Things like joiras timebug dont interact with cumulative upkeep.
FuturePants (1 month ago)
I played Jotun Grunt in standard, I ran white/red soldiers it was a heck of a 2-drop in that format.
Semmelein (1 month ago)
What a great list!
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
Thanks!
Seph Imaru (1 month ago)
I'm really surprised that Braid of Fire didn't get a decent number of tops. I mean, it's almost free mana. That kind of stuff should get out of hand after a few turns. Odd, that no deck has been able to utalize it yet.
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
Too slow for any format its legal in. You can just play tron, its faster.
_ (1 month ago)
Not really related to the video, but I just theory crafted this card: 3B Enchantment Cumulative upkeep - pay 2 life, draw a card 1B: remove an age counter from ~
GoldStorm07 (1 month ago)
This would work better for vanishing/fading.
Captian Nemo (1 month ago)
Cumulative Upkeep can be worked around so easily these days there is no reason not run cards with it as it can be horrifically abused against the opposing player.
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
It can't ve worked out around without running otherwise janky cards. That's why no one plays them, even in EDH only a few are played
Sexywrm (1 month ago)
How about top 10 token generator like seller of birds.
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
Already did it
Apex 0 (1 month ago)
You just showed me all these dirty cards for my Muldrotha
Brian Varilla (1 month ago)
Phyrexian Unlife and glacial chasm makes you virtually indestructible.
Top Silver (1 month ago)
your introductions are way too long! it should be 1min max!
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
Nah I'm good.
Peter Smythe (1 month ago)
landhome must be one of the worst mechanics. Off the top of my head that is what I came up with.
ImperatorNocturne (1 month ago)
Wall of Shards is awesome in Arcades the strategist decks, 1w for a 8/8 and it draws you a card
Scootaloo 009 (1 month ago)
I'm surprised braid of fire didn't make the list. Too slow I guess.
8 Orange 8 (1 month ago)
Ummm... Herald of Leshrac definitely deserves a spot on this list!!!
8 Orange 8 (1 month ago)
Granted it didn't see any play really but it's powerful
Jacob Smith (1 month ago)
Are there any in the orschoff colors?
Raynman Gaming (1 month ago)
No love for Braid of Fire? For 2 mana, you get crazy ramp. At the time, it was bad because of mana burn, but now that that doesn't exist, its only downside is that it costs 2 to cast. With enough instants or flash creatures, the fact that it's during your upkeep shouldn't matter too much.
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
Has nothing to do with love, gotta go with the the numbers. It has 0 points.
Elliott Canada (1 month ago)
I am guessing any mechanic with a reprint is likely not on the worst mechanics list.
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
You would be wrong! Several mechanics that appeared in multiple sets will be on the list.
Brian Linden (1 month ago)
I could see Wall of Shards working well in an Arcades EDH deck. Not only is it a cheap 8/8 flying, but many Arcades decks run a lot of flicker effects, to flicker walls to draw extra cards with Arcades, so that's an easy way to reset the time counters. Personally, I passed it up for my own Arcades deck, but it's definitely in the top 10 cards I'm considering putting in.
Nathaniel Smith (1 month ago)
I honestly forgot this mechanic existed.
Blader Z (1 month ago)
I expected Cover of Winter to be in this list. Edit: I guess it's more of an EDH card though.
Mattman324 (1 month ago)
Number one (or a really high number) on the Worst Mechanics List is going to be Epic, right? Only one of its cards are good enough to see tournament play, and there were only five of them. I don’t know how you’re going to weight things towards smaller mechanics though (One Cycle Only mechanics like Epic and Hideaway are automatically at a disadvantage, as are small set only mechanics like Chroma or whatever)
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
No evergreen mechanic makes the list, they are all too succesful, so the problems you are imagining don't show up.
Mattman324 (1 month ago)
That’s gonna be rough for mechanics with only 10 cards, but I imagine you can’t weight it by percentage or else evergreen mechanics since Alpha are going to get the short end of the stick.
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
To be elligible, a mechanic has to be on 10 cards. That said, one card of a cycle of 5 seeing play is a rate of 20%, and that's wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy higher than any mechanic to make the list.
Cumulative Upkeep is my favourite mechanic. The cards behind it are so obscenely powerful, and all it takes is one Solemnity, Eon Hub or Fatespinner to undo all the downsides.
Machina (1 month ago)
No Fiery Braid? I guess it's more of a commander card than legacy
Lukas Schäfer (1 month ago)
I would be interested in top 10 cantrips
assault410 (1 month ago)
My prediction is that card that says if you cant pay or dont that you lose the game
assault410 (1 month ago)
It made the list. It made you lose 20 life. Not just lose the game.
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
Huh?
Schwarzer Ritter (1 month ago)
One important fact about Glacial Chasm: It prevents not just your opponent from damaging you, but also yourself.
Schwarzer Ritter (1 month ago)
@Dante Wright Platinum Empyrion is better in some ways, but worse in others. It costs 8 mana more than Glacial Chasm, it is a spell so it can be neutralized. It is a creature and an artifact, which makes it easier to destroy. It will take away your ability to pay life points.
Dante Wright (1 month ago)
There is always platinum emperion, which is an overall better card in every sense anyways.
Nicholas Stockero (1 month ago)
That was what I thought you were talking about, but just had the other thought in my mind too. Sorry about that.
Schwarzer Ritter (1 month ago)
@Nicholas Stockero I was thinking of spells and effects that damage yourself, like Pestilence, Ancient Tomb, Orc Artillery.
Nicholas Stockero (1 month ago)
It is nice...but if your implying that that nullifies the cumulative upkeep, it doesn't. Paying life isn't dealing damage.
Christian Lewis (1 month ago)
If the pattern holds, Mind Harness will see play again in 2027.
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
Buy them out now!
Kodo Elder-Groebe (1 month ago)
I can’t believe Mind Harness didn’t make it to the top 10 worst art list
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
Yeah, its definitely bad.
IAMNEKOMIMI (1 month ago)
Why didn't Balduvian Shaman make the list?
IAMNEKOMIMI (1 month ago)
@Nizzahon Magic Of course. Whenever I think of cumulative upkeep I think of such horrible cards as Shaman, with such a niche and overpriced garbage effect and, the one you named, Juju Bubble. I really like making fun of those cumulative upkeep cards.
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
That's a joke right?
Waffletigercat (1 month ago)
I'm guessing Braid of Fire is #1.
Waffletigercat (1 month ago)
@Nizzahon Magic Disappointing. And surprising.
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
Really. It has 0 points.
Waffletigercat (1 month ago)
It wasn't on the list at all? Really?
WUZLE (1 month ago)
Black used to get some stupidly powerful color hosers. Another evil one was Perish, which pretty much read "B2: Target Green player loses the game." As though Green didn't have enough problems back then.
Caleb Weidner (1 month ago)
My favorite cumulative upkeep card is varchilds war riders. I know there will be a way to break it someday :P
Sauvenil (1 month ago)
Repercussions and Pyroclasm... throw in some Tamanoa for extra yuks. (I also use Forbidden Orchards with it.)
Raven Markussen (1 month ago)
Braid of fire?
Sauvenil (1 month ago)
@Nizzahon Magic ad infinitum! LOL
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
Explained in a pinned comment.
Keiya (1 month ago)
Why would you ever care about the upkeep on mind harness? It doesn't ever five the creature back.
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
Yes it does? If you can't pay the upkeep, the aura falls off and your opponent gets the creature back.
Mystical Glimmer (1 month ago)
Jotun Grunt get in my bat deck! Desecrated Tomb (3, Artifact, Whenever one or more creatures cards leave your graveyard, create a 1/1 black Bat creature token with flying.)
Mystical Glimmer (1 month ago)
@Sauvenil throw in a Coat of Arms and you are good to go ;)
Sauvenil (1 month ago)
Desecrated Tomb is one of the coolest cards I've seen in a while. So much synergy with surveil and Gaea's Blessing, and that's just in Standard. Jotun Grunt would be excellent with it in Modern.
nharviala (1 month ago)
How on earth is Braid of Fire not on this list?
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
Explained in a pinned comment.
Vít Molitor (1 month ago)
I wonder why some of the really efficient cards arent played more with Solemnity.
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
They still aren't good enough for non-rotating formats, if the only way to take advantage is making sure you get Solemnity in play.
kayden janveaux (1 month ago)
Mox Lotus plus a cumulative upkeep boom
Jacob Hook (1 month ago)
My friend has a glacial chasm deck that uses a card called eon hub (it says skip your upkeep step. That way you never have to actually pay the cost). It is quite frustrating if it works.
Jacob Hook (1 month ago)
I don't think you are correct about that. I just looked at the official rules for cumulative upkeep, as well as the oracle text and rulings for both glacial chasm and eon hub, and found nothing that would indicate that to be the case. From the rules: '702.23a Cumulative upkeep is a triggered ability that imposes an increasing cost on a permanent. “Cumulative upkeep [cost]” means “At the beginning of your upkeep, if this permanent is on the battlefield, put an age counter on this permanent. Then you may pay [cost] for each age counter on it. If you don’t, sacrifice it.”'. The whole interaction is a triggered ability that happens during upkeep. Therefore no upkeep = no trigger. There was even an against the odds deck using eon hub back in 2016 that explicitly uses this interaction along with cards like pact of negation (essentially letting you cast them 'for free' as long as eon hub is in play). So, unless you can give me a link to a rules update that is not mentioned in the official rules, or the oracle rulings of both cards in question, and has happened since 2016, then I'm pretty sure the interaction works (if you can then I will happily retract my statement). Also, I never said it was a good deck. We are a very casual group when it comes to power level (there's 3 of us, and we're all Johnny players. Make of that what you will.). We do try to get the rules right though.

anybody else hear "at number 8" on the number 3 card or am i having auditory hallucinations? haha
dollores (1 month ago)
How do you remove time counters?? I thought you couldn't
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
There are several cards, like hex parasite, that can remove counters
dino face (1 month ago)
Where was tabernacle?
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
Tabernacle doesn't do cumulative upkeep, just an upkeep cost of 1. It would be even better if it were cumulative!
Marten Pretorius (1 month ago)
Commulative Upkeep i love it
Andrew Rios (1 month ago)
I was really expecting smokestack somewhere on this list, only to look it up and realize while it is the same effect it isn't keyworded.
duskreqm (1 month ago)
@Nizzahon Magic Except adding the counter to Smokestack is optional.
Nizzahon Magic (1 month ago)
Yeah, I guess that could be worded "Cumulative upkeep -- each player sacrifices a permanent"
The Lone Wanderer (1 month ago)
Top ten Banned cards
Taylor Knapstein (1 month ago)
World Fire for #1? Fun fact - cards with "when this enters play, exile target. When this leaves play, return targeted card to the battlefield" is REALLY fun to run with World Fire, if your play group is casual enough to allow it to see play
Zack Sherman (1 month ago)
I'm so excited about worst mechanics
Evan Metz (1 month ago)
Where was braid of fire? So good. Also very good in commander because you ramp twice as fast
Ian Jackson (1 month ago)
You know you only get the Mana from Braid of Fire on your upkeep, right? That's it. It empties from your mana pool as soon as you move to your draw phase. Also, EDH doesn't have sanctioned tournaments so he doesn't consider EDH when making these lists.
Travis Davis (1 month ago)
Let me guess banding is the worst mechanic
Alan Tennant (1 month ago)
Cumulative upkeep of 1 life is interesting. As downsides go thats very minor at first, your opponent/s may even want it to stay alive. Even cumulative upkeep of 1 mana on a card that only costs 1 or 2 mana that need only hang around for a turn or two might not be expensive mana wise.
Daryl Chiu (1 month ago)
Jotun Grunt is powerful against Dredge. :3
Mike Churchill (1 month ago)
Love the list keep up the great job:)!!
morgunkorn (1 month ago)
I was somehow expecting Stasis to be there, but it isn't actually a cumulative upkeep, it just feels like it because you can't use your previously tapped islands.
Chris Flores (1 month ago)

Bomble sivart (1 month ago)
Deaths shad hate
Caleb Weidner (1 month ago)
There are plenty of decks out there whose wincon rely on damaging the opponent so I think it will see play again. Heck even if your wincon is emrakul it won't matter how much life your opponent has after you resolve that first annihilator trigger.
Roy Platt (1 month ago)
Except then you can't pay the upkeep
Jerald Gassner (1 month ago)
I feel like there's a Red card that has a cumulative upkeep that adds 1 red mana to your mana pool. I don't remember the card name though
Andrew Evans (1 month ago)
Braid of fire
FlawlessRhythm (1 month ago)
How was Braids and Herald not on the list?..
____________ (18 days ago)
That’s what I came to ask.
Dave Dussault (1 month ago)
Your criteria for this just seems odd. List would be wildly different for EDH, for example.
Cyan Light (1 month ago)
What's odd about it? Every possible ranking system is going to arbitrary in some way, it seems like a natural enough decision to default to something that is both objective and widely considered to be central to competitive MTG. You could start your own list series with your own criteria and that would be equally as valid but I don't see the point in "disagreeing" with his approach, especially since he always says up front exactly how he's ranking these.
Dave Dussault (1 month ago)
I understand that.
Kenpachi Zaraki (1 month ago)
His lists dont apply to EDH. Basically only formats that count towards professional finishes
Faizal Rahim (1 month ago)
Excellent work 👍👍👍
Liem Solow (1 month ago)
Should do a Top 10 for decks, or deck archetypes
agafaba (1 month ago)
One danger of reduce damage cards is that it doesnt prevent loss of life, something that black will only get more and more of as time goes on.
Skullgrin (1 month ago)
No Braid of Fire? Funky.
Steven Eaddy (1 month ago)
Skullgrin its mostly a commander card
Lee Fisher (1 month ago)
NIzzahon, they aren't time counters, as you said when discussing Juju Bubble, but age counters (as we see on the first card on the list). I believe age counters are used exclusively for this.
Dexxus (1 month ago)
@Cyan Light That'd make for a spicy play in the Delusions of Grandeur/Donate combo.

HaydenX if you are douche enough to run him I assure you are a douche enough to run cards that will let you get there in time
