Does Polish Transportation SUCK? [Kult America]

3230 ratings | 86368 views
When I moved to Poland, I was amazed by the various modes of transportation available to citizens. It's convenient, it's fast and what's more - it's eco-friendly. But Poles always complain about their public transport, so on today's episode of Kult America I will take a 48 hour trip across Poland to find out if Polish transport sucks? God I wish I could move there but I'd never survive the winter. You mention no graffiti. Half of warsaw was COVERED in graffiti when I went there. I was appalled that people would trash their own home. You liberals love the environment so much but will only live in crowded Urban cities. you know nothing of living with the environment in true nature.

Teraz z południa na północ można skoczyć Pendolino w 6 godzin jednak jakieś 8-10 lat temu trwało to 11-13 godzin w starym syfiastym przedziale. Wszystko u Nas idzie w dobrą stronę :) a auto mam na gaz :)

Gigantic EU structural funds have changed Poland beyond all recognition in the last 14 years, along with foreign direct investment and the incessant growth of the market economy. Economic migrants working long hours in the UK and other Western European countries have also had a massive impact, sending or bringing back hard earned cash to the motherland. By 2004 Poland had still built hardly any highways, the roads being bumpy and full of holes ('like Swiss cheese' was a common Polish saying). PKP, Polish State Railways, was drowning in debt. The most common car driven was still the tiny Fiat 'Maluch'. How the tables have turned.
Marcin Dobrowolski (24 days ago)
yeah yeah whatever, EU funds were 10% with the Metro system in Warsaw. Why can't you fact check something before you speak ? Of course it wasn't anything like that in "the not so distant past" because we were crawling out of a forced upon us communism. The way we've managed to rebuild Poland is a miracle itself. You think EUs funds are essential and crucial for Poland to prosper ? can you do simple math ? Then count 20 billion Euro for a period of 5 years. 20 x 4,10 = 82, that means that Poland receives 82 billion PLN (polish złoty currency) over a period of 5 years. For every 3PLN we receive we have to pay 1PLN back to the EU budget every year. So it automatically makes the sum you receive lower by 30%+ that gives you roughly 54,940,000,000 for 5 years with 10,988,000,000 per year. To that you have to add existing variants of money that we have to additionally pay to the EU like adjusting agriculture laws that the EU makes up every month which also costs money. Additionally as presented by the EU commissar Günther Oettinger in a report to the EU parliament in 2017 (https://www.handelsblatt.com/today/politics/handelsblatt-interview-oettinger-germany-may-have-to-pay-more-to-eu/23567142.html?ticket=ST-383679-tfHXeFEfuFairCPsRJwz-ap4) For every 1 euro the European Union spends in Poland, 0,89 Euro cents comes back to Germany as pure profit through the transfer of goods and services, making Germany a Netto beneficent not payer. GDP of Poland in 2017 was roughly 524,5 billion dollars. Since 2017 our GDP went up by over 6%. Do the math yourself and for the love of God, please fact check your info before you speak. EU makes money on Poland every single day.

Polish public transportation is much better than in for example in Texas where you don’t have schedules,/ buses/ buses stations are not covered and benched , expensive , no subways underground. Roads systems is in Texas great but so many cars and so many traffic in the morning and ending daylight you try to avoid.

Marcin Dobrowolski (24 days ago)

I am going to Poland again in 3 weeks, first time I was there was in 2007 and I visited Krakow and I was very very surprised how nice of a country it was. I was there visiting because I was dating a Woman from the Czech Republic she had to study for some exams and I had time off and thought I'd go visit Poland since it wasn't too far away I'm going again to visit Poland. A friend of mine that is Ukrainian, works in Katowice. I will stay a few days and then we are going to head to Ukraine I'm really looking forward to visiting Poland again. Good soon it as a country is doing so well. Unfortunately for me I am a Respiratory Care Practitioner, and I'm pretty sure there's no such a a thing in Poland's social medical Care, maybe...but probably not, I would love to move back to Europe permanently as long as I can make a decent living.

In your glowing review of trains you've forgotten one thing, the building of railroad tracks. This is much more resource intensive (and CO2 emitting) than building roads. Also, most trains never have full occupancy. I love trains, but they really aren't as clean or efficient as your portraying them to be - even nice polish ones.

W Krakowie takie "złe" powietrze a według danych umieralności, mężczyźni w Krakowie żyją najdłużej w całej Polsce.
In America's cities public transportation is synonymous with crime and thuggery. That's where you find thugs who will harass you and target you especially if you look well off. This requires heavy police presence. The only exception I've seen so far is the Metra system and the Ogilvie Transportation Center in Chicago. The Oglivie station is super clean and impressive, like an airport almost, but the demographics of the passengers are completely different. This is because Metra is a rail system used by middle class and upper class to get to their posh downtown jobs. Hood rats don't really use it because of expensive tickets. Monthly pass is well over $200. This is beyond the means of a hood rat.

I live in London and was in Zakopane & Kraków a couple of months ago using public transport. The bus/train station in Zakopane was like something out of the communist era, the trains from there to Kraków were practically non existent, once a day if I recall correctly. I tried to use public transport to get to Kraków airport for my flight back, after being sold a ticket for a non existing service due to the trains to the airport having been suspended because a new motorway is being built. That particular experience left me thinking we're really spoilt so far as transport is concerned in the UK. There was a distinct lack of communication at the train station. I noticed there were no station staff on the platforms so if you're not familiar with the system there's no one to ask. No information from the ticket sellers which again comes down to either a lack of training and/ communication. Overall not good. However, on the plus side, the bus from Zakopane to Kraków was clean, very affordable and on time. Also I couldn't believe the entrance to the platforms in Kraków were directly accessible from the car park it was so bizarre. I definitely prefer public transport in London as its more joined up, better organised with knowledgeable staff on hand if you're not sure if you're going in the right direction, on the right bus/platform. Public transport is a great idea and I certainly use it all the time in London, but in Poland it needs to be better organised, more joined up and better staffed. That's how you will encourage more people to use it.

Drogi same w sobie są w tragicznym stanie. Od niedawna zaczęto budować autostrady (najdroższe w Europie 9,61mln euro/km) i drogi ekspresowe, niestety prawie wszystkie powstają w Polsce zachodniej i centralnej. Wschód to nadal dziurawe i nierówne drogi krajowe, często bez pobocza i jeden pas.

I'm so amazed by Kraków and I highly recommend walking the streets at night to everyone. People say different things about this city, but I'm sure about a few things: the food is disgusting. I tried in many places and apparently I was at the best chinese restaurant in Kraków. It stinks - you can die of air no matter if it's winter or summer, feels objectively dirty and if you get into it, so much like art capital of Young Poland... Alive 24/7, at night in a very special way. Walking the streets 11pm-12am feels like being on a VERY good movie. Movie. And it starts being obvious nothing is moving around you, you blend, adjust yourself to the city, not other way around (people tend to do that a lot and it's pretty frustrating). And stuff. Anyways there is really and truly something amazing about it... that is sure.

That's funny, but we always envied Americans their car culture, we always wanted to travel freely and conveniently... Thank you for showing us, Poles, that actually we have a quite decent public transportation! It is at least possible to get from any one point to any another by train, bus, tram, metro or plane... Maybe it is caused by the fact, that in PRL times this was actually the only option, since cars were expensive quite scarce among society. We did not have the culture of Henry Ford, that stated, that every of his workers should afford one of cars he produced, nor the Volkswagen (a people's car - inspired by the philosophy of Ford) ideas. Cars in Poland always were expensive and even today it is quite an expense to buy a new one. Plus - the gasoline is much more expensive than in US. Moreover, we do not have so much area for roads and parking places as there are in US. In Japan public transportation ix EXCELLENT. But they would not be able to survive without it, in their geographical and social conditions it is absolutely impossible to rely mainly on private cars. Their highways are already heavily congested, cities and metropolitan areas are overcrowded, so this causes public transportation not only more convenient, but in majority of causes - only possible solution.

People don't want to use public transportation because a car is seen as a symbol of success in Poland.
