Does Polish Transportation SUCK? [Kult America]

2881 ratings | 73274 views
When I moved to Poland, I was amazed by the various modes of transportation available to citizens. It's convenient, it's fast and what's more - it's eco-friendly. But Poles always complain about their public transport, so on today's episode of Kult America I will take a 48 hour trip across Poland to find out if Polish transport sucks? Polish transportation did suck at the end of the war until 1960 but today it's ok. Delays will occur everywhere in the world.

I am going to Poland again in 3 weeks, first time I was there was in 2007 and I visited Krakow and I was very very surprised how nice of a country it was. I was there visiting because I was dating a Woman from the Czech Republic she had to study for some exams and I had time off and thought I'd go visit Poland since it wasn't too far away I'm going again to visit Poland. A friend of mine that is Ukrainian, works in Katowice. I will stay a few days and then we are going to head to Ukraine I'm really looking forward to visiting Poland again. Good soon it as a country is doing so well. Unfortunately for me I am a Respiratory Care Practitioner, and I'm pretty sure there's no such a a thing in Poland's social medical Care, maybe...but probably not, I would love to move back to Europe permanently as long as I can make a decent living.

In your glowing review of trains you've forgotten one thing, the building of railroad tracks. This is much more resource intensive (and CO2 emitting) than building roads. Also, most trains never have full occupancy. I love trains, but they really aren't as clean or efficient as your portraying them to be - even nice polish ones.

W Krakowie takie "złe" powietrze a według danych umieralności, mężczyźni w Krakowie żyją najdłużej w całej Polsce.

In America's cities public transportation is synonymous with crime and thuggery. That's where you find thugs who will harass you and target you especially if you look well off. This requires heavy police presence. The only exception I've seen so far is the Metra system and the Ogilvie Transportation Center in Chicago. The Oglivie station is super clean and impressive, like an airport almost, but the demographics of the passengers are completely different. This is because Metra is a rail system used by middle class and upper class to get to their posh downtown jobs. Hood rats don't really use it because of expensive tickets. Monthly pass is well over $200. This is beyond the means of a hood rat.

I live in London and was in Zakopane & Kraków a couple of months ago using public transport. The bus/train station in Zakopane was like something out of the communist era, the trains from there to Kraków were practically non existent, once a day if I recall correctly. I tried to use public transport to get to Kraków airport for my flight back, after being sold a ticket for a non existing service due to the trains to the airport having been suspended because a new motorway is being built. That particular experience left me thinking we're really spoilt so far as transport is concerned in the UK. There was a distinct lack of communication at the train station. I noticed there were no station staff on the platforms so if you're not familiar with the system there's no one to ask. No information from the ticket sellers which again comes down to either a lack of training and/ communication. Overall not good. However, on the plus side, the bus from Zakopane to Kraków was clean, very affordable and on time. Also I couldn't believe the entrance to the platforms in Kraków were directly accessible from the car park it was so bizarre. I definitely prefer public transport in London as its more joined up, better organised with knowledgeable staff on hand if you're not sure if you're going in the right direction, on the right bus/platform. Public transport is a great idea and I certainly use it all the time in London, but in Poland it needs to be better organised, more joined up and better staffed. That's how you will encourage more people to use it.

Drogi same w sobie są w tragicznym stanie. Od niedawna zaczęto budować autostrady (najdroższe w Europie 9,61mln euro/km) i drogi ekspresowe, niestety prawie wszystkie powstają w Polsce zachodniej i centralnej. Wschód to nadal dziurawe i nierówne drogi krajowe, często bez pobocza i jeden pas.

I'm so amazed by Kraków and I highly recommend walking the streets at night to everyone. People say different things about this city, but I'm sure about a few things: the food is disgusting. I tried in many places and apparently I was at the best chinese restaurant in Kraków. It stinks - you can die of air no matter if it's winter or summer, feels objectively dirty and if you get into it, so much like art capital of Young Poland... Alive 24/7, at night in a very special way. Walking the streets 11pm-12am feels like being on a VERY good movie. Movie. And it starts being obvious nothing is moving around you, you blend, adjust yourself to the city, not other way around (people tend to do that a lot and it's pretty frustrating). And stuff. Anyways there is really and truly something amazing about it... that is sure.

That's funny, but we always envied Americans their car culture, we always wanted to travel freely and conveniently... Thank you for showing us, Poles, that actually we have a quite decent public transportation! It is at least possible to get from any one point to any another by train, bus, tram, metro or plane... Maybe it is caused by the fact, that in PRL times this was actually the only option, since cars were expensive quite scarce among society. We did not have the culture of Henry Ford, that stated, that every of his workers should afford one of cars he produced, nor the Volkswagen (a people's car - inspired by the philosophy of Ford) ideas. Cars in Poland always were expensive and even today it is quite an expense to buy a new one. Plus - the gasoline is much more expensive than in US. Moreover, we do not have so much area for roads and parking places as there are in US. In Japan public transportation ix EXCELLENT. But they would not be able to survive without it, in their geographical and social conditions it is absolutely impossible to rely mainly on private cars. Their highways are already heavily congested, cities and metropolitan areas are overcrowded, so this causes public transportation not only more convenient, but in majority of causes - only possible solution.

People don't want to use public transportation because a car is seen as a symbol of success in Poland. I'm in my 30s and I commute everyday by bus to work and most of my friends can't understand why, when I explain it's for environment and convenience (I read books when I commute) they don't particularly understand it

I totally wish we would have that here in Houston, we have buses and they’re fine if you live inside of the city, we have trams but they’re trash and we only have 3 lines and I swear half of the people don’t know what a metro is, the department of transportation keeps saying a metro is” too expensive and too slow” and I’m just like you’ve never been out of Houston have you? When i told my polish friend about this he said “I’ll stip complaining about krakow”

Pronto Curiosity (9 months ago)
Well, I must have been awfully unlucky. Every time I've taken a Pendo or Dart or older IC across Poland it's been full of people, and noisy, and half the time delayed typically 20-30 mins. And on one overnight trip last summer, packed with people (some of whom were even weirder than me) even at 3 in the morning. And during school holidays such as in the summer, it's a nightmare with zillions of kids as well as teachers and parents and everyone's crammed in to the corridors and you have to struggle to get out of your compartment to the bathroom where probably someone is hogging it and smoking illegally. I guess I'm just one unlucky dude with so many trips and all but one being a very crowded and noisy mistake making me wish I'd taken a coach/bus or hired a car. I don't think the tourism promo people could have done a better job with the stylish photography or perfect uncrowded sunlit carriages and trains thing - but just a pity the reality ain't quite like that for all of us.
Oskar Kulik (9 months ago)
Public transport in the largest cities (especially Warsaw) certainly works very well with modern solutions (especially regarding the rolling stock). Unfortunately it lacks a priority in spatial planning. Also the connections between cities, especially by rail, are on a decent level. However, the level of public transport in less urbanised areas is often extremely weak, relying on small scale transportation companies (so called "busiki"), or not functioning at all. It is a pity that they do not deal with this topic on a national level, especially that it only increases our dependency on imported oil (tens of billions zlotys annually...), not to mention the climate impact of the millions of additional car trips.

Why use car to travel Poland? Because it's cheaper in some cases for even one person than train. For family with children - always. Also you can take your luggage right from your home to your trunk, start when you want and go where you want. Anyway public transport in Warsaw is good.

I do appreciate some recent improvements in regards to railway transport- I was born and raised here so I can remember the old , and slow as hell trains .I would not swap that for any car trip. You just sit down-open a book or a newspaper or just simply look outside the window.I love it.And the best part of it is the fact that sooner or later you are getting into random conversation with other people.I do have some funny stories-like let's say one story per 2 journeys on average :)

Nie bede zakupow targal nawet do najpiekniejszego i najbardziej ekologicznego pociagu, ani autobusu. Musze miec samochod.

Brawo Wy! :-/
